belated update of some sort:
Firstly I really tunnel visioned way too hard on my start location. PHI/SPI just doesn't hold up compared to the other traits I had on offer even if the starting micro was more awkward for them. So once I got to three or more cities my initiative began to die. The map didn't help as well. I had plans for an early math bulb into chopping Mids but the complete absence of any stone or lush forests buried that idea quickly. Trying to REX didn't work that well either because soooo much of the land is just bleh and the returns for settling it are a lot lower since settlers take forever to build and I don't have the instant return of FIN cottages to boost me either. Maybe the map for the last game spoiled me too much but I really don't dig this one. Not much fun in trying to grab land when most of the contested stuff is just dry grass/plains that won't be worth working until Guilds. Also Ruff's start is waaaaaaaaay better than mine. Wet Corn + sheep >>>>>> Grass cow + non forest deer on a hill (Not that I can complain after having screwed up the map for PB34 so bad ) So my plan now is not to win because that's not gonna happen. Will just try to be prickly and die slowly or not at all.

Right, and they remain archers period until both machinery and feudalism are done. Anything with multiple upgrades is like that; see maces with grens(or machine guns) vs. rifles.

For posterity's sake the reason I handled the war so badly was because I didn't pay attention to the power graphs until it was too late. I could have had LBs several turns earlier and cobbled together something that would have brunted Khan's offensive more but didn't because I'm a lazy bastard. Also the map was a pain in the ass in regards to defending because Khan had two fronts with me on the opposite ends of the map.
