It took years of watching telenovelas and reading books to get this level of comprehension, along with the grammar I learned in school a long time ago. The prose isn't too difficult compared to some other books I've read. Since so much media is published in Spain Spanish, you'll get used to the dialect's quirks quickly. There are a few unfamiliar words here and there (like "váter" in one part), but that's what SpanishDict is for! Chances are the next update will be tomorrow night.

La Prisión: Elige Tu Propia Aventura Part 4
The long-awaited resolution for CHOICE #3 is here! Let's continue listening to Armando and sit with the lonely man instead of Jhony's gang. This guy is 40 years old, wears glasses, and has a "perfectly shaved beard". When I ask whether I can sit with him, he gives the stock "it's a free country" sort of response. His name is Félix, but when he asks mine, I tell him to call me "nuevo". I pluck a hair out of my soup, and I ask him in an "ironic tone": "And how have you ended up in a 5 star tourist resort like this?" Félix laughs and says it's because of a "math error". (error de cálculo) He follows that line up with this: "It seems a gram of TNT can make the difference between a controlled explosion with a simple hole in the mountain, or completely destroying your neighbor's house". I respond: "It seems like a typical problem with the neighbors". My character really likes Félix for some reason. Maybe it's because they have the same knack for laughing at their mildly amusing statements. Félix elaborates on his story: "Well, I must be the prisoner with the most ridiculous story in the world. By chance, only the cat was in the house, so I won't have to spend many years in prison. I wanted to make a cave in the mountain for my laboratory. I analyzed the terrain, the mix was perfect, I didn't know anything bad could happen." Félix performs a minor stage magic trick involving a lemon and a copper coin that impresses my character. He says he's passionate about science, but not a formal scientist. Félix claims he could make the soup into a bomb because it's acidic enough. Other ingredients seem to include 2 spoons and an apple. Here's a goofy line: "Félix talks out of control without stopping, and seems like a small child discussing Pokemon, Star Wars, or any of their fantasies". (Brand names often remain the same in Spanish: Notice how Star Wars isn't called "Guerra de las Estrellas" or something.) Valero gives me CHOICE #4: "Very well. Listen to me everyone, it's time to work. Everyone should follow their team leader.' You can see how the prisoners are separating into different lines. Félix goes to the line to the kitchen, while the 'latinos' and Jorge, the ex-basketball player, go in the gardening (jardinería) line." So should I go with Félix to the kitchen, or with Jhony's gang and Jorge the drunk driving basketball player to the gardening task? Probably the former. Félix's path promises explosions, and he seems friendlier than the gangsters.

La Prisión: Elige Tu Propia Aventura Part 5
Let's agree to Félix's scheme! What can go wrong with a guy who once blew up his neighbor's house by mistake while trying to build a secret lab? In the kitchen, everyone peels potatoes. This is so boring that I look around and see a familiar face. Roberto was a coworker that I had to put in prison earlier because he was involved in drug dealing. I hide among the furniture (muebles) because he probably has a grudge against me. The narration calls Félix a "científico", even though he said he wasn't a formal scientist in the previous part. Félix smiles "from ear to ear" (de oreja a oreja). He says this after showing me a plastic bag with liquid inside: "I've managed to pull the needle out of the haystack, and all thanks to this magnet. Aren't you excited?" More of Félix's science fair speech: "Do you know that if you put an egg in vinegar, it turns into a ball that can bounce on the floor without breaking? I have one hidden in the closet (armario). I made it last week. Do you want to see it?" Roberto notices me and says "Traitor! What are you doing here? You sent me to prison! I'm going to kill you!" Félix comes to the rescue and throws the contents of a small bottle on Roberto's mouth and nose. Roberto says this and then falls asleep: "I'm going to kill you. . .you're a cop infiltrating the prison. . .I'm going to tell. . .". Félix says his concoction can "make an elephant fall asleep". The work shift ends. I notice that Roberto has a piece of paper sticking out of his pocket. CHOICE #5 is to either take the paper, or steal some acid to make Félix's explosives. For this part, I'll go with the latter.

La Prisión: Elige Tu Propia Aventura Part 6
I take the acid and give it to Félix. He then tells me why he helped me earlier: "I recognized you. At first I had my doubts, but when we were in the kitchen, I remembered what your face reminded me of. I saw you months ago in the Alcántara Street police station (comisaría). I was focused on you because you worked like a crazy man. It seemed as if you were the motor of that police station." (One thing about Spain Spanish is that the preterite tense is rare compared to Latin American dialects, and they generally prefer the present perfect. An example of this is in Pokemon X's translation, where the narration will say something like "The enemy Pokemon has fainted" instead of "The enemy Pokemon fainted".) Our book's setting is now established to be in Spain. The reason for this took a bit of Internet searching, since it's not like obvious locations like Madrid have been mentioned so far. I say that "Now you're going to tell me you're the secret son of the king, or something worse". Félix's expanded backstory reads thus: "I found a treasure on my farm, the famous Moscow Gold, buried in various places. I dug a very deep mine, but the prize was great. I don't remember how many kilos of gold that I unearthed. It's true that it was by my hands that I destroyed part of my neighbor's house, but I'm not here for that." A second quote continues the story: "Exactly. When the police began to suspect that I had found one of the greatest treasures in the history of this country, they began 'extra-official investigations'. My neighbor's house didn't matter to them. I came to 'provisional prison', and since then they have tried to get the information out of me. But I'll never tell them where I hid the gold. I'm sure that what they're doing to me will never appear in the official reports". The "Moscow Gold" (oro de Moscú) seems to be a reference to hundreds of tons of gold shipped from the Second Spanish Republic to the Soviet Union shortly after the beginning of the Spanish Civil War in 1936. The funds came from the Bank of Spain. Historians dispute what effect this offer had on the Spanish Civil War. Félix claims to have made a small tunnel from the showers to the roof (azotea). While everyone else is watching a movie, we'll make our move. When I return to the cell block, I notice that the guards are much more active than normal. At dinner, I see neither Félix nor Roberto. Félix reappears at the appointed time in the showers, and offers to help me get through the tunnel. The exit is on a very high point, and it's windy tonight. Félix built a small rocket to send a message to his contact on the outside, as long as I write something on a piece of paper. "In a few days, members of the judicial police will appear asking uncomfortable questions. We will make sure that they find you and then everything will be finished. In a few months we'll be enjoying a fresh mohito on a tropical beach." Then we get our CANONICAL ENDING! "Your companion's words sound like a sweet melody in your ears. After a few days everything happens exactly as Félix planned. FIN". The CANONICAL ENDING may have been the best! Félix got me out of prison with his outside contacts and MacGyver ingenuity. He's the real hero, not me. EDIT: Yes, I'll do the alternate endings like I did for Deadline Delivery. You all want to see my character get "shanked", and are probably wondering what the Spanish equivalent for that word will be.

La Prisión: Elige Tu Propia Aventura Alternate Endings Part 1
Let's pilfer Roberto's paper in CHOICE #5 instead of getting the ingredients for Félix! "You bend down and covertly (disimuladamente) take the paper. You open it and show it to your companion. You push Roberto's body under a table with your foot in order to hide it". Félix realizes the paper has the plans to the ventilation system, and suspects Roberto was going to make an escape attempt himself. He says he sees a viable route, but the whole ventilation system would have to be deactivated first. Since a guard watches that all day, it's probably not a good idea. He says "I have a better plan. We'll see each other in the baths at 21:00. Don't be late". Roberto's still unconscious, and I wonder if Félix had killed him with the contents of his strange bottle. We then see these lines: "Be calm. I have it under control.' Félix's words sound worse than those of a drunk driver. 'It's a homemade mix that I designed myself". The guards find Roberto after 20 minutes, but he claims not to remember anything about what happened to him. They search all the cells and interrogate the prisoners. They find "toothbrushes converted into blades (arma blanca), mobile phones, drugs, and a small portable video game console." Things don't go well for me after this: "The guard found the plans for the ventilation system under your mattress (colchón). They immediately transfer you to an empty room where they get to the bottom of this. You defend yourself by saying that you don't know anything about those documents and that someone must have put them under your mattress. The interrogation becomes more and more violent. They strike you all over your body. You end up confessing a fake story". I try to pin the crime on Jefe with the God complex and gold watch: "It was the Boss, yesterday in the prison yard. You can prove it with the camera footage. He told me that he would enslave me if I didn't do it, and afterwards he would offer me to other prisoners as a servant in exchange for money". It's finally time to meet Félix in the baths, but someone interrupts me. "I've been dreaming of this moment for a long time.' Roberto's voice can be heard only a few centimeters from your ear. 'Where are the plans?' 'The. . .guards. . .have. . .them'. You can barely talk. Roberto pulls the sheet that surrounds your neck and starts strangling you". Alternate Ending #1 is the first fatality: "Idiot! You and your mad scientist friend ruined my escape plan. At least I'll have my revenge. It's your fault that I'm here, and I've spent entire nights remembering the moment when you betrayed me.' "Don't. . .do. . .it". "Your words sound weaker and weaker. You fight to free yourself, but it's useless. Oxygen finally stops going to your brain. It's your. . .END". Alternate Ending Death Count: 1 So choosing to take Roberto's paper instead of finishing Félix's message rocket results in the former choking you to death with a sheet.

La Prisión: Elige Tu Propia Aventura Alternate Endings Part 2
This time, we'll go with Jorge and the Jhony gang to the gardening job instead of following Félix in CHOICE #4. I like the fresh air and work with Jorge and the other prisoners. But one member of Jhony's gang approaches me and asks: "What were you talking about with the mad scientist"? He doesn't want me to talk to Félix again. I agree to his demand to placate him. Jorge the basketball player tells me the rumors about Félix destroying his neighbor's house and killing the cat. "And didn't he talk to you about the Moscow Gold"? He assumes that I know part of the story about the Moscow Gold because my character is a Spaniard. One third of the national gold reserve was supposed to go to France, Russia, and "other places" near the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. But in this book, some of the gold never left Spain. "It seemed that several kilos of gold were buried under Félix's property. He found the first ingots by accident and continued digging until his greed made him destroy his neighbor's house". At dinnertime, 2 prisoners are sitting by Félix to threaten him. They pick up Félix and drag him off to the baths. Félix tries to warn me not to do anything by making a hand gesture. This leads to CHOICE #6. Go after them and help Félix myself, or alert the guards about what's happening? Since we already know the guards are crooks, I decided to help Félix. They try to strike me when I push one of them, but they miss. The guards intervene and restrain the prisoners who were attacking Félix, but the most they do to me for now is give a threatening look and say "Don't push your luck" (possible translation of "no te pases de listo?). I never mention the Moscow Gold when I sit next to him, but I'm thinking about it the whole time. We watch the movie "Contratiempo". This is the original title for the 2016 Spain movie "The Invisible Guest", so chances are that's what the reference is supposed to be. We enjoy the evening (velada), and Félix gives me a hug because he knows he can trust me. But all this buildup leads to the 2nd bad Alternate Ending: "Suddenly, various people hold you by your arms and legs. They're the 'latinos'. One of them covers your face with a cushion (cojín) and fiercely presses. You make an effort to free yourself, but it's useless. You hear their words, but you can't see anything." "Liar! You told me this morning that you weren't going to talk to him. I see that you're defending with him, eating dinner with him, and you won't stop having conversations with him. What kind of fool do you take me for? (Best I could come up with for ¿No me respetas?)" "You try to talk. You can't. You begin to lose oxygen. Everything turns black. You stop thinking, and it's your END". Alternate Ending Death Count: 2 This time, it's the old pillow style smothering instead of sheet strangulation, but the results are the same. It was too late to help Félix personally after I tacitly declared my allegiance to Jhony's gang by going with them to the garden. But can the situation be salvaged if I alert the guards instead and become a prison snitch? (No. That'll probably lead to a grisly death!)

La Prisión: Elige Tu Propia Aventura Alternate Endings Part 3
Let's alert the guards in CHOICE #6 instead of rushing off to save Félix and get smothered by a cushion. "You put down your tray and you approach one of the guards covertly. You don't want to seem like a snitch (chivato). You inform him about what's happening without anyone else in the cafeteria realizing it. The guard resolves the situation quickly. Félix returns, and the aggressors are sent to another area.: I apologize for not running off to save Félix directly, but he says he would have done the same thing in my place. He says all the rumors about him are true, and that he has plans to retire (jubilarse) on a tropical island with the gold. He offers me some of the treasure because he "doesn't want to be the richest person in the cemetery". We make improvised stairs with a bench. Félix takes one of the tiles out of the wall, and a black backpack falls out. We go to the prison's roof through a hole like in the CANONICAL ENDING. Félix ties a rope to a shoe and a bar of metal as a pulley. "I don't imagine a helicopter is coming to look for us like in the Matrix". Inside the backpack are metal bars and a "large black fabric". Félix is probably making wings with these prison materials, and my character's terrified of heights. Our ending text builds up suspense until the FIN. "You run like you've never run before. Upon reaching the edge of the roof, you jump with all your strength. You fly over the prison and head towards the fence. 'We don't have enough height. We're going to crash'. You're terrified. Your companion seems to be enjoying this journey far more than you. 'Yes! This is life'. 'No, no, no, no, no'. You see that the fence is slowly coming closer. You can't help but shout. 'We're going to crash!' You brush the fence with your feet. You both land 20 meters from the prison and continue running. Adrenaline turns into euphoria and happiness. You're free! END". Our 2nd good ending may not have resulted in ARTUS and the corrupt cops being defeated, but Félix and I are free thanks to his homemade glider. La Prisión: Elige Tu Propia Aventura Alternate Endings Part 4
Ever wondered what happened to that gold watch Jefe guy? Let's not say anything to him in CHOICE #1. He reveals that he really is that influential within the prison. "You look at the black object that comes out of Jefe's pocket. It's your cell phone. You wonder how he could have gotten it. You remember that the guards took it away from you when you entered prison, and that it must have been kept with all your other personal belongings". Jefe brags some more: "The question is not how, not when, but why. And the reason is the matter of power. We live in a world of information, my dear friend, and information is power. Getting your telephone wasn't difficult. Discovering that your PIN number is the date of your grandfather's death excited me. But the quantity of things that I can get thanks to this little machine is priceless, and that, my friend, that is power". The guards Blas and Valero are watching. I'm about to walk up to them and tell them what happened, but my cellmate Armando warns me that it's a bad idea. Jefe says Armando is prudent: "The old man is right. Don't be stupid, and accept reality. Here the law doesn't exist. And now let's go back to what really matters. In this prison everything must pass through my hands. Every business, every problem that you may have, any decision that you take or anything stupid that you do, absolutely everything. And I repeat, is that clear?" This leads us to CHOICE #7: Agree to Jefe's demands, which leads us to the pages right before CHOICE #2? Or walk into the obvious trap and report Jefe to the guards? The only path I haven't taken here is the latter. Blas and Valero search Jefe and find nothing after frisking his pockets, legs, and shoes. Valero has this to say after I wasted his time: "Lying to the guards can cause problems. Do you want to be acquainted with the special cells we have in solitary confinement so soon? Without company, light, beds, or anything else. Only 4 walls and yourself". Jefe pretends to defend me by saying it was a "misunderstanding". But what happens next suggests that my punishment will happen later. Valero takes me to a cell block for long-term prisoners. Valero is briefly distracted by an argument in one of the cells. CHOICE #8 is to do nothing and wait for Valero to return, or to "run and try to escape". Let's go for the bad ending and pick the latter! I run for it, and the other prisoners seem to be rooting for me. Valero is pursuing me, and he's in good shape "for his age". "You think in thousandths of a second. You run towards the fence. With a bit of luck, there won't be any guard in the tower, and you can jump it before Valero traps you". Unfortunately, there is a guard in the tower, and Valero just alerted him. He activates the alarm button and loads his shotgun. Remember the fences from before? Here's where the payoff occurs. "With a powerful leap you reach halfway up the fence. You climb to the upper part where your clothes are wrapped with barbed wire. You feel pain. You feel blood running from your arms. It doesn't matter. Over the fence, you can see the forest that's outside of forest. Freedom. With a strong movement you manage to free yourself from the wire. You fall to the other side of the fence. You can feel that you've broken a foot, but it doesn't matter. With the broken clothes you continue towards the second fence, the only thing that keeps you from freedom". "You arrive at the last obstacle that separates you from the exterior. You climb with your hands already totally red with blood. The fence is electrified. You can feel powerful discharges through your whole body. You resist as much as you can and climb one meter, two meters, three meters". Valero orders the guards to fire. "You feel an inhuman pain in your back. Your hands let go of the fence and you fall to the ground. The blow is very hard. You see the sun in a blue sky, and you think about how close you've been to being free. The birds fly in all directions as if they were crazy because of the shot. The sun illuminates and warms up your face. It's a pleasant and agreeable sensation. Your vision, little by little, begins to fail. Everything turns around above your head, and finally you lose consciousness". I wake up in a white room which seems to be a hospital. Too bad it's the prison infirmary! Cristina the doctor tells me about this, and says I've been in a coma for 3 days. I tell my story about the police and ARTUS corruption to Cristina. She seems to be familiar with this, as one time she had to fill out forms for medical acts without seeing patients. (Assuming I'm reading the sentence correctly. "Rellenar" is a vague verb at times.) Cristina doesn't seem to believe the prison warden is a crook, because she knows him. He lives in a rich neighborhood with his wife and 3 children. She says he "has a perfect life". Then again, where do you think he got the money from? She suggests Jefe has so much power because he knows compromising information about various people around the prison. Cristina offers CHOICE #9. Will she give my message to Jefe, or the prison warden? Let's ask the warden for help, even though he's an obvious villain. The warden appears in the infirmary. "An elegant man of about 50 enters the room. He sits with you and takes off the white sheet that covers your body to check on you. 'Cristina told me your story. It's difficult to believe, and seems almost like science fiction.' I tell him I'm a police officer and that I can prove it. He asks me why I tried to escape, and I say I was desperate. He asks if I've told anyone else, but I only notified Cristina. This causes another bad ending! "You can see the door opening again. A guard enters the room, carrying the dead body of Cristina covered in bloody clothes. 'Leave the body here, next to the bed.' The director gets up and heads back to the door, before looking at you and saying 'I'm going to tell you what had happened here. After you tried to escape by jumping over the fence, you ended up in the infirmary. When you woke up, you attacked poor Cristina. One of my guards listened to the screams of the poor doctor, entered the room, and shot you.' The door closes. You stay alone with the guard and Cristina's corpse. You try to get up, and you lack the strength. With what's left of your energy, you roll and fall onto the floor. You try to stand up, but your muscles fail you. You feel an incredible weakness. The guard takes out his pistol and points it directly at your chest. Bang! Bang! END". (The sound effect translated here as Bang! is ¡Pum! in Spanish.) Yes, the warden really is evil, and is perfectly willing to kill coworkers to cover up his corruption. This was possibly the worst ending yet, as Cristina died for my incompetence. La Prisión: Elige Tu Propia Aventura Alternate Endings Part 5
In CHOICE #9, let's give the message to Jefe even though I offended him earlier by trying to report him to Blas and Valero. Recovery from my failed escape attempt takes a long time. Most of it is spent in my cell, since I don't go to the prison yard or work. Jefe insults me in a long paragraph, and I'll translate part of it: "Perhaps an idea went through your puny brain that the millions of euros that the government spends on security are nothing compared to your excellent plan of escaping by running like a headless chicken. And worst of all, kid, is that you made a bad impression on me (me hiciste quedar mal). I told Valero to bring you to my cell. You were going on the road when you had the brilliant idea of trying to escape. You owe me one, friend, and you'll have to pay up". If I follow his orders, I'll regain Jefe's confidence. If I fail, I'll be "plant fertilizer". He arranges for me to be assigned to the cleaning team, a cover for the real mission: delete the warden's hard drive. I crawl through the air vents as if I were playing Deus Ex instead of a CYOA. The warden's room looks like it has objects taken from a "casa burguesa", which must mean a mansion. Inside the room is a desk, a trunk that looks like a pirate's treasure chest, and a curtain. I insert the "pendrive" (probably a flash drive) into the warden's computer. None of the documents look particularly interesting: just family photos, bills, contracts, and official documents. I wonder why Jefe wants it deleted so badly. The booby-trapped flash drive succeeded, but I hear footsteps nearby. I can hid inside the trunk, or behind the curtain for CHOICE #10. I conceal myself behind the red curtains. Wonder if this will activate a Super Mario RPG minigame. I remember that I failed to cover up the air vent cover. J.C. Denton I am not. Just before I'm about to attack the warden to get away, the phone rings. "Yes?. . .Good morning. It's me, the warden, yes. . .Well the truth is that we have him as a prisoner. We've erased all information about him. Right now, he's like a ghost without a name or personal information." The warden is talking to another member of the conspiracy. Turns out he's not planning on keeping me here for long: "Understood, understood. He must be eliminated. Very well, nobody will miss him. Tomorrow, I'll order his execution, like we did to the Portuguese man. Nobody will realize and in a few days everyone will have forgotten with him. Goodbye!" Presumably no other conspiracy is wiretapping his phone for blackmail purposes. If my character doesn't act soon, he'll be killed in a coverup. I escape via the ventilation and finish my workday. One of Jefe's men tells me that very important information will be revealed in a meeting tonight. The "Portuguese man" turns out to be Helder, a man Jefe liked. Jefe hates the warden, but is only interested in keeping me alive to assert his political power. Jefe compares the situation to Cold War proxy conflicts. A Serb named Darko who speaks in broken Spanish offers to protect me. He doesn't conjugate his verbs and leaves them in the infinitive. Nevertheless, he's big and strong enough to make a good bodyguard. He knows when the guards are trying to poison me at breakfast too. When they give me a suspicious cup of coffee, he intimidates a new prisoner into drinking it. This prisoner is in jail for stealing a car and crashing it into his ex-wife's house. When he drinks the coffee, he "begins to spit up blood and falls to the floor in agony". After this "heart attack", a group of prisoners attacks the guard that tried to poison me. He dies of more than 30 stab wounds. The situation quickly escalates. Guards arm themselves with clubs, shields, and helmets and start attacking prisoners. "The wounded are counted by the dozens". The warden seems to win the war. He's forced to explain the deaths of a few prisoners, but Jefe is sent to solitary confinement. I somehow manage to survive all this. Darko and I grow closer together. He explains that he lost his home in the Yugoslav Wars, in which he fought. To get around the lack of information about me, we think about prison tattoos. Some time later, guards armed with clubs attack! Darko "seems like King Kong fighting against an army of Lilliputians". The hallway is full of guards. CHOICE #11 is to either join Darko in his suicidal fight, or surrender. Why miss out on the fun with King Kong vs. Lilliput? The guards form a shield wall, but it's no use. Darko opens a breach in the wall and throws guards to the floor. I grab a club and help him. But we're defeated when the guards break out their stun guns. One shot is all that's needed for me, and it takes a few more to knock Darko to the ground. We get yet another bad ending. "You think about the message that you sent to the outside world, the tattoo of your face on the arm of a prisoner. It's possible that your story goes to the media, perhaps including the corruption scandal. However, you won't see it. The guards continue shooting you until your heart stops.
