The Internet Wrote:The key difference between a democracy and a republic lies in the limits placed on government by the law, which has implications for minority rights. Both forms of government tend to use a representational system — i.e., citizens vote to elect politicians to represent their interests and form the government. In a republic, a constitution or charter of rights protects certain inalienable rights that cannot be taken away by the government, even if it has been elected by a majority of voters. In a "pure democracy," the majority is not restrained in this way and can impose its will on the minority.
Most modern nations—including the United States—are democratic republics with a constitution, which can be amended by a popularly elected government. This comparison therefore contrasts the form of government in most countries today with a theoretical construct of a "pure democracy", mainly to highlight the features of a republic.

Well, holy shit. The photo of Trump bloodied with his fist raised in defiance is going to be the iconic image of his reelection.
Come at the king, you better not miss.

A Republican wouldn't have missed.
Too soon? Probably too soon.
The initial CNN headline was "Secret Service rushes Trump off stage after he falls at rally". Not kidding. I grabbed a screenshot before they took it down out of shame.

You're aware the shooter was Republican, are you?
Well, I bid farewell to democracy.

The shooter was a registered Republican who had also donated money to a Democrat vote organizer in 2020 for Biden's campaign. His views, like many young men's, seem fluid and not affixed. I would think you European types who pride yourselves on being well educated and informed could do the bare minimum of reading his Wikipedia page?

Information at this stage is still coming out and it will take a while and we shouldn't jump to conclusions or conspiracy theories this early. I heard it was $15 in 2021 not 2020 for instance. But in any case Greenline is correct. People are not part of monoliths and groups are not made up of the same people.

There's no joke if the shooter was a Republican, so I hope that's not the case.

Apparently the guy who donated 15 dollars to the democrats in 2021 was 69 years old at the time so not the same guy.

JD Vance as VP seems like a sign that Trump's approach to governance this time will be more thorough and thoughtful if he wins. In 2016 he was willing or required to compromise with the standard GOP party line on a lot of domestically unpopular issues. Vance is a signal that he is willing to get smart guys on hand to hopefully turn his big promises into deliverable actions. Vance himself wasn't always on the Trump-ist side of issues, but has been able to articulate the concerns his voters have pretty well, which is more than most GOP politicians are capable of regardless of where they stand. It seems a positive sign that a 2024 Trump administration might avoid being bogged in bureaucratic struggle sessions and deliver the goods.
