RB PBEM #2 - Justinian (SPOILERS!)

t134 - Thanks to Krill, I already know my stack is dead; wonder what else is going on....

Many marching boots greets my login, but it seems that it's just ships - there are no units on-land, and most of his Galleons are out of sight. Well looking at the log that means that not only did my stack take out the Musketeer which died attacking it, but also the 2Grenadiers & War Elephant who wouldn't have been able to move after attacking - so 4 units plus what I took out with that attack isn't a bad turn-over.

Ah no, there are his Galleons inside Cherbourg ... threatening both Constantinople & Antioch.

I give in and chop down the forest next to Constantinople to ensure he only gets hill defense. I also queue a couple of Cannons so that I'll be able to do some collateral when he lands. I also queue a Settler in Iconium - probably a bad plan, but replacing Adrianople can't hurt, right?

Shuffle the troops around to leave Const well defended, Antioch somewhat defended, and a few units in between that can reach either city in a turn.

Oh, and I promote Duck Season to a Cataphract so he can be vaguely useful. wink

t135 - what have we in store today?

Constantinople: Cannon - WE (1t to mix up stack)
Antioch: Cannon - Cannon
Angora: Rifleman - Grenadier

Not sure it does much, but there you go.

Lost a Fishing Boats to Krill, but no other attacks. Krill's fleet is still in Cherbourg.

And back to waiting.

t136 - Marching boots ... but nothing's happened that I can see.

Constantinople: WE - Gren
Thessalonica: Cataphract - Cannon
Antioch: Cannon - Gren
Angora: Border pop (oops) - Gren

Ah, maybe SL threw his fleet at Krill and that's what he was talking about.

Maybe I'll dial research up and see if I can get Steam before I die. 7t @ -20gpt.

And Darrell has Sid's. frown

t137 - getting quick now ... but I'm going on vacation next week so it'll stop for a while too.

Doesn't look like an invasion ... and it's not.

Antioch: Gren - Gren
Iconium: Settler - WE

Settle Adrianople mk2 on the ruins of the old - start Barracks - and garrison with 2 Muskets. Don't see any of Krill's troops in range, so he might not notice for a few turns.

Draft Thessalonica, Angora.

Promote a Galley to Galleon to speed up the supply run from Angora - means I'll need to save some more cash to finish Steam, but next turn will be OK (since I forgot this turn).

Back to waiting for the attack.

Send a quick note to SL about Steam:
Quote:Cheers!

BTW, how far off Steam are you? I'm over 50% through and 5t away at full-burn, but need some help funding it. That would free you up to pursue something else.

Quote:Well I've played the turn already, so you'd have to offer. It would be good if you could offer me some so I have the option of running an upgrade and maintaining research if I need to. I can always offer it back if I don't use it and you think you need it.

t138 - note from SL that he offered 200g, I'll accept and then offer back at EoT if I haven't used.

Constantinople: Gren - Cannon
Antioch: Gren - Gren

Still no sign of Krill launching an attack against me, but I can see his & SL's fleets circling each other to the SE.

Move a Rifle & Gren into Adrianople and promote one of the 2 Muskets to Rifle.

Draft Const.

t139 - note from SL accompanying the save:

Quote:Hey Dreylin,

Managed to kill 8 french SoL for the loss of 5... meh. Small victory if nothing else. Krill can counter and maybe even that up but not without losing whatever he uses. Ruff is replacing my SoL and I'm cranking 2-3 a turn. I had 17 last turn! I'm bored of doing nothing this game.... Soon Krill will be fielding scarier ships... Destroyers cannot be far off for him and Darrell...

Anyway - let's play for a bit but Krill has this game.

Cheers,
SL
Well, things might be turning on the Naval front, but it sounds like morale is low on our team. Let's see what's going on this turn and whether maybe we can see if we stand a chance....

Thessalonica: Cannon - Cataphract
Antioch: Grenadier - Cannon
Angora: Grenadier - Rifle

I suspect that Krill has to mount an attack soon to delay getting me to Steam Power. The key city, of course is Constantinople; I've kept my forces loosely spread between there and Antioch with some units in between to react to any potential attack, but I think now is time to pull an extra chunk of the forces back into the city to make certain he can't take it with an amphibious assault. Actually, with SL's defeat of a large chunk of his aggressive fleet, that task would be much harder with few ships left able to bombard.

He has 9 Galleons in range for a total of 27 troops, but some of those loaded are certainly Cannons, so let's say ~22 that can attack directly from the Sea. I've left my Cannon and a couple of Grens & Rifles between, but Constantinople now boasts 18 defenders, including 6 Rifles, 6 Grens and 2 Cataphracts ... I think that should be enough.

Krill & Darrell have both been running their EPs against me, so there's no sign of being able to see their research again - infact I've lost sight of all of the Island cities apart from Cherbourg and I expect to lose that next turn too, but I've still got the man in the forest to the East keeping an extra eye on the comings and goings.

Finish the turn with a reply to SL:

Quote:SL,

Well, it looks like all he can strike back with this turn are 2 Frigates so it looks like a definite step forward for us. His Galleons are stilll inside Cherbourg, but I suspect they may sail next turn. I can see 4 SoLs & 2 Frigates in the vicinity, so when you have the forces to spare it would be great to have a small fleet between the mainland and the island to deter him from attacking. I'm building land forces exclusively now to hold onto as much as I can, but I'll have Steam in 3t which should let us regain control of the seas for a short while.

The key really is what Darrell is doing now that he's got Sid's ... I'm pretty certain we can guarantee him the win if we hold Krill off for long enough, but then who do we really want to win!?

What kind of win condition would Darrell go for? Culture? But I'd love to see that happen. Krill could have to choose between letting his pet win (after Krill keeps claiming there's no such thing as shared victory) or turning on him. That would be quite entertaining. smile

Well maybe I was a bit optimistic about that. The problem is that at some point Darrell would have to stop cooperating with Krill and work towards his own ends, so perhaps Culture is the best chance he'd have of getting close without Krill noticing.

Of course someone would have to convince Darrell that we have a chance of holding Krill off him for long enough to make a difference ... and I don't know that we'll be able to do so.

Anyway, I doubt that I can convince him to do so, so maybe I'll suggest that SL or Ruff get in touch to sound him out.
