Not really. Two hints:

1. Regarding the club, think "golf club".
2. The word we're looking for is a noun.

I think it must be. Next:

Candy, if new. (4,9)

That was indeed correct. Explanation:

covert=thicket=brushwood, fight=brush, (golf) club=wood

Your current clue is interesting for it's brevity. smile

Alright, here's something slightly different; a cryptic music quiz.

Name the following song titles. I have taken the liberty of rephrasing the titles sligthly. I also include the artists in spoiler tags, as additional hints.

1. Lucky bastard, by
Creedence Clearwater Survival
2. Fluttering, by
Bob Dylan
3. Dust in the Corona, by
Donna Summer
4. Oops; I shouldn't have drained the bathwater, by
The Drifters
5. The quiet passage, by
Simon And Garfunkel
6. Treasures an old horse, by
B-52s
7. Cooler bluff, by
Elvis Presley

Should you get totally stuck, it might help to know that all of the songs were chosen from the Rolling Stone Magazine's Top 500 Songs of All Time.
