RB Pitboss #1 SPOILER - Hatshepsut / India

Sullla Wrote:Nice overview. Looks like things are going well at the moment. Any thoughts on how the diplomatic alliance structure is shaping up, given all the player changes recently?

Thanks Sullla. I do feel like things are going well for me right now. I think that the most important thing for me needs to be to put up enough military to deter any attacks, and then I should be able to use my landgrab to lead me towards victory. I'm not sure how anyone is possibly going to win this game. Domination and Conquest seem like they would take forever and people would give up before that. Culture and space seem very easy to stop, so it seems like the most likely option would be diplomatic, either AP or UN. Conveniently, I'm just about to build the Apostolic Palace :-D

I'm actually kind of surprised that I am not higher (than 4th) in the land count. Obviously Yaz is ahead of me, and probably dsplaisted with his 10 cities. I don't know if I just have too much coastal tiles or what. Still, from what I've been able to see (and I'll be able to confirm better in 2 turns once Broker gets Paper), I have more unclaimed land in my north than anyone else has around. Being able to tap into that and the resulting economies of scale is going to put me in a great place (hopefully!)

So, now to answer more of your question on the diplomatic front. I will run person by person and give my thoughts

Lins, Sunrise, Broker - I think all 3 of these guys are solidly in my court. Haven't talked much to the Lins lately - I should probably write them just to make sure they aren't up to anything too crazy.

Imhotep - Everything I have heard from and about him suggests that he is not really that interested in this game, and I think that it is fairly likely that he's just going to go through the motions. I'm a lot less worried about him attacking me, both from the fact that I have a pretty strong military now (and only going to get stronger as I tech towards Gunpowder / Rifling) and also from the fact that I have a decent sentry net in the no man's land between us.

Elkad - I think he is pretty solid in our camp as well. I was really glad that he decided to (at least for now) stick with us in the UTA. I do have a bit of worry that shadyforce might convince him to attack me.

Munro - Still open - haven't heard from him.

Yazilliclick - Still trying to figure out what he might be wanting to do. One thing that I think we have going in our favor is that it's probably likely that he's not as good a player as Krill, and that's not really an insult - it's just that Krill is very solid. But the other thing that we have going for us is that I think Krill was a founding force in the creation of the NUTA, and so now without him, unless Yaz or anyone else steps up to "lead" the NUTA, it's going to founder as people start doing their own things. If we can keep our group solid, we can outclass them.

dsplaisted - Haven't gotten a chance to interact with him much.

m-h - I think both of them are not really interested in this game much more.

shadyforce - It is too bad that geographically speaking, the only lands that really make sense to capture are shady's. I actually would prefer to work with him because as I mentioned in my email to him earlier, he does write frequently and his messages are coherent and good. I think that he is likely to just continue the war with Elkad which is good for me I think. But I'm not ruling out that he might be trying to get Elkad to swap sides.

Really, I think it's only natural that the longer we go in this game, the more people are just going to just go through the motions. And people that are just going through the motions can be frustrating if you're trying to rely on them, but they're useful in that you can be more aggressive towards them with less consequences. We saw a perfect example of this with Broker settling the city on Kodii's doorstep - Kodii even said in his allegory that it was mostly not wanting to deal with it in real-life time terms.

So, if I can exploit that and build up the #1 economy / teching / population / etc, I think that I stand a pretty good chance at being elected diplomatic victor once we reach the point where enough people decide they don't feel like playing anymore.

Thoughts / questions on that?

Just did a quick tech check. Here are the NUTA civs with the following techs

Feudalism: shady, m-h
Compass: shady, dsp, m-h
Guilds: nobody
Paper: shady, m-h
Music: shady, m-h
Philo: yaz
Optics: nobody
In addition Imhotep is missing Literature

The UTA all have Feud, Compass, Optics, and Guilds. Paper due next turn from Broker, Philo probably soon from Yaz, and Banking in 3 from me.

Does the UTA have a philosophy trade going with Yaz?

Nice comments on the metagame.

Sorry - I meant UTA is going to get Philo from Elkad, which came in this turn.

But the big news is an email I got from Imhotep

Quote:the world is not big enough for us two. Consider this the declaration of war. We’ll meet on the battlefield.

So it's not looking that good.

Imhotep is marched a stack through shady's land, and has appeared on the forest 3E2S of Green Twp. He has 5 Praets, 10 Elephants, 1 axe and 4 impis.

Shadyforce is also going to declare war - he has in various places near the front

1 mace
1 pike
5 eles
1 skirmisher
1 spear
1 HA
10 cats
1 xbow

My defenses
In Fairfield - Mace, HA, Spear
Between FAirfield and GT - 1 ele
in GT - 2 maces, 1 cat and 1 archer
1turn from GT - cat, mace, HA
2 turns from GT - mace
2 turns from the NE hill (these were units I had been heading down from the border with Imhotep) - 1 archer, 1 ele, 2 maces, 1 longbow, 1 sword and 3 cats.

Crikey! Any sign of Shaka-esque mega-stacks?

Edit: timing...the secret of cross-post comedy lol

Email received from Yaz last night
Quote:Yeah, seems I had some settlers sitting around, figured I better put
them to work.

I've been thinking on what you sent and have been going over the
situation for a bit (somewhat difficult since I'm traveling for work
right now) and I like the concept but looking over it it may not be
time to 'spring the trap' as it were. What's your situation right
now? Would you be able and willing to hit someone right away if it
formed? I think if we do the switch it's probably best to time it for
a good time when catch one or two of the other group off guard right
away and knock them out of contention. Otherwise if we form what's
obviously a super alliance that's going to back them in a corner and I
think we'd be setting ourselves up for one of us at least getting hit
hard by a few of them right away because they'll know if they don't do
something they're out.

my reply
Quote:Well..... As you may or may not be aware, Imhotep (and shadyforce I believe) just declared war on me and marched a nice stack into my lands. So I will probably be pretty busy with that :-). I don't know if you were aware of that or not - I know that you have a quechua around there so you may have seen the units massing on the borders.

In any case, it remains to be seen whether me getting worked will help or hurt you. At this point I'm not sure if I will lose cities or not - there are quite a few units coming my way.

On the one hand, if I am a rival to you, then hurting me helps you. On the other hand, if my land gets swallowed up by Shadyforce (whose traits of Cre/Fin are one of the best combos in teh game), that's going to be a tough nut to crack. Especially given that he already has a pretty solid working relationship with dsplaisted (they have coordinated on war declarations twice now). Throw in the army of Imhotep and that's a pretty big combo.

But maybe you knew about this already and you feel like you are in with them. If that's the case, then there's probably not much I can say that would sway you, right? But if this was news to you, doesn't that already tell you a little bit about how close you are to their new alliance?

Hope to hear from you soon

Any thoughts from the lurkers on how screwed I am from those stacks?

Looks like big trouble to me: a good mix of units make the stack hard to take down without major losses, and you seem to be outnumbered as well.

Very badly: It's around 2:1 in units, and even after your cats go, the enemy stack would still have full strength troops, and good defense odds.

@SP and Liping - thanks for the brutal honesty frown

So what would your recommendations be? Obviously I will be chopping and whipping a few extra units (probably mostly maces), and I have 2-3 turns which should be able to get me maybe 5 or 6 extra.

I'll also revolt to Theocracy to get 5xp units.

But do I try and hold my ground and slow them down enough? Start talking surrender? What would you do?
