I think it a viable alternative. It would be more defensible on a hill. But yes you're also right that the main draw back is lack of forests in the first ring.

Going for a quick fourth city sounds like a plan. I don't really want to go to war with Azza. I'm not sure if we'll have a choice given he's Rome and we don't have copper.

I think lack of food is an even bigger drawback tongue. but yes lack of forests as well.

Lewwyn, they are getting better and I think we'll be doing quite well once our cities grow. we'll have a top 3 GNP, a top 1/3 food, and respectable manufacturing. we'll hit top 5 cities when we grow to size 6, maybe even at size 5. our gnp grew this turn enough to shave a turn off our masonry research, which is nice. im sure it'll grow more when you found the Odyssey w/ immediate trade routes (nice micro there).

I think let the capital grow to 6 on chariots then slow build the settler? try to avoid 2-pop whipping.

that said, we need moar cottages! NE, N of capital, S-SE of capital, and SW of iliad all need cottages.

btw, I've noticed neither azza not serdoa seem to be putting EP's on us. either they are in an EP war with each other or they have discoverd another player south of azza? either way, if azza doesnt put some on us soon, we'll have research visibility on him in 9-10 turns, lol.

Didn't realize you had switched it to Masonry earlier. One of the reasons I wanted to start Poly was that it would lead to Priesthood as well as Monotheism that way we could get the prereq on writing and efficient beakers there as well as Monarchy. Though at this point doing Masonry first doesn't really make a difference I suppose, if we can get to Judaism first.

Anyway I can't unpause so if people decide to not reload you'll need to play the turn. I logged in earlier and played with the tiles. I left Gilgamesh on the horse, mine, crab, wheat and Illiad on the cottage, rice. This gets Illiad to grow in 2 turns (which is max speed) and allows gilgamesh to grow in 3 turns while building a chariot in 3 turns. Both good things I think. The workers in the north need to finish the cottage 1 N of Gilgamesh. Then I think we need to consider chopping forests into a new settler in Gilgamesh, though that's not on the next turn.

Scout needs to see whats in the hut and city needs to be built.

Worker in Illiad should move 1SW and put a turn into a cottage. Worker by Odyssey moves to the corn and starts farming.

Warriors explore?

Looks like the reload happened and there are 5 hours left on the clock. Will you guys be able to grab it?
Reply

you can grab it if you can remember exactly what lewwyn did the first time.

if not, ill do it in an hour or two.

long gchat between me and lewwyn

me: are we still playing catch up in pb8? haven't been paying much attention due to the reload
Lewwyn: we're back to even now
me: ok
after you played turn?
Lewwyn: time to pop the hut
me: ah cool
there's only like 3 techs we could get
iron working, sailing, or metal casting
Sent at 9:46 PM on Thursday
me: masonry i guess, that would suck
Sent at 9:49 PM on Thursday

Sent at 10:13 PM on Thursday
Lewwyn: gonna go play the turn
me: k cool
Sent at 10:31 PM on Thursday
Lewwyn: we got gold
frown
me: how much?
Lewwyn: 31
me: thats not bad
oh
could be more
Lewwyn: yeah oh
lame
me: oh well, it makes up for the rats in the granary event, plus some
Lewwyn: found grass cow
me: ok
Lewwyn: north of the ines
wines
me: that whole arfea is nice, too bad it will be awhile before we can expand over there
oh
cool
near the odyssey?
Lewwyn: yeah its a high priority I think
lemme get SS up or you can go in and look
me: yeah i thoughbt you meant near the scout
Lewwyn: I didn't finish the turn because it just rolled lol
me: k
but you've made all moves?
Lewwyn: found deer near scout
no I haven't moved the workers yet
the two north workers have to decide what to do now
they could chop into another settler or maybe stonehenge?
noones got it yet
me: lemme check out the game
Sent at 10:57 PM on Thursday
me: initial thoughts, we need to decide what we're doing w/ azza
Lewwyn: yeah
me: we ca n't bust out stonehenge and invade him, that'd be silly
Lewwyn: we could chop chariots
we could chop chariots in illiad as well as gilgamesh
the worker next to illiad could chop the one forest east of the spice
what do you think
we basically have to decide now
do we want to rush Azza or REX
me: i want to rush him, but i wont be mad if you over rule him
question, just got save open
why didn't you finish the road to the iliad to connect trade routes? seems worth one turn delay to the corn farm for trade routes
Lewwyn: I think 4 chariots in 5-6 turns could be done
I prioritized getting the corn over the TRs
me: why? just one turn, you already had one turn into the road
Lewwyn: The worker next to Illiad is suppose to come down and finish the road
me: oh, the area right of the Iliad with the seafood is an island, I thought it was peninsula
thats another city with intercontinental routes smile
oh ok
Lewwyn: but if we go chariots then I may finish the road before the corn :/
what do you think?
me: well
Lewwyn: 4 chariots?
me: how long until we invade? 3 cities?
i was originally tnhinking 6-8
Lewwyn: no way
me: keep in midn he's got that warrior holed up on the hill
so he'll have some warning
Lewwyn: it has to be now or never
quick early strike or not at all
a war at 6-8 cities would be devestating
to our economy
Sent at 11:05 PM on Thursday
me: ok
why did you put iliad back on barracks, instead of a chariot?
Lewwyn: just parked it there
me: so I take it you want to rush with 3 cities instead of 4?
Lewwyn: I was going to discuss with you
me: which is fine
I think if we just take the capital that will be enough, his 2 small cities we can raze
Lewwyn: well like I said do we rush or not?
he's got to have copper right?
me: well whats the alternative?
well
doesnt much matter, chariots will roll warriors and axemen
im more worried about iron
im pretty sure he doesnt have archers yet
Lewwyn: lol if he has copper and he gets 1 spear we're done
1 spear can hold out against 5 chariots
me: well, ok
does he have hunting?
Lewwyn: yeah
his pigs are pastured
me: oh yeah
hmm
Lewwyn: let's not rush
me: well you're starting to talk me out of it
but I don't know an alternative
Lewwyn: I talk myself out of it
me: i mean, long term we're screwed
he has low power, meaning he doesnt have a spear now
Lewwyn: we need sailing
me: but his MFG is #1 in game
Lewwyn: and a galley
its too big a risk
me: so that PROBABLY means copper? although it could mean stone and mines
Lewwyn: frown
me: ok
i was thinking of going horseback riding too, but thats too expensive
Lewwyn: sorry
me: I guess after we nab judaism we get iron working for axes?
Lewwyn: I want to rush him but its not worth possibly throwing our game away
we need sailing
me: yes
but how do we defend ourselves from prats? we have warriors, chariots.. and can get archers easily. lol.
at least w/ a religion we'll have cultural borders quickly
Lewwyn: we need IW yes
we'll make a run for judaism but I'm not really optomistic
me: really?
im not optimistic about oracle but don't see why we wouldnt land judaism
anyway if we aren't going to attack we might as well bust out stonehenge, if we get judaism we can use the prophet for shrine
Lewwyn: I'm thinking chopping into another settler might be best
just rex out to that cow and wine
and the sheep
and get sailing and get the silver fish spot for more happiness
me: also more cottages
Lewwyn: turn into a econ juggernaut
me: yeah
Lewwyn: I wish we could tell Azza we're not going to attack him
me: and just hope to survive until macemen, maybe azza gets tangled w/ serdoa if we're lucky
Lewwyn: XD
me: well
i think building stonehenge would do that
lol
Lewwyn: lol
I want sailing so bad
me: why, you want city #4 in the silver site?
Lewwyn: yeah
me: we can build a workboat to scout the island, then comeback for the silver fishies
Lewwyn: but I think city #4 has to go to the grasscow wine
me: yeah me too
city 5 & 6 can be the too island spots
two
you know that EVENTUALLY we will have to fight azza, the way the map is laid out there's just no way to avoid it
the area to the right is so juicy, he can cut us off easily
Lewwyn: he can cut s off but if we have a galley we can settle past him
me: and he'll probably capture that barb city and start expanding that way ebfore too long, unless the area south of him is even better
well of course
but that will make it harder to defend if our empire is in 2 parts
we'll see, we'll just have to prioritize guilds smile
Lewwyn: not much we can do
me: ok, so lets grab a wonder
man how come we have 3 horses spawns fairly close to us, and the only copper is so far away
or maybe not that far away, just 6-7 plots from our wine/cow city
we could plant a city there to build axemen if we don't have iron
smile
Lewwyn: oooh I got it
we can set the chariot out of sight for Azza
and then kill any settler he sends to settle the gold
Sent at 11:22 PM on Thursday
me: ok
where did you want city #4?
1E of the wine picks up wine, cow, and gold.. and hopefully seafood too? but has no overlap with the odyssey
1w would do that too, and is close, but would not be coast and hsave to sea spots with no lighthouse, yuck
Sent at 11:24 PM on Thursday
Lewwyn: lets finish exploring the cows
we should post this convo in thread
Sent at 11:28 PM on Thursday
me: yeah ill do it
move warrior 1E? I can do it now or log out and let you do it
Sent at 11:29 PM on Thursday
me: ok i logged out
i'd say move the two warriors to separate forests, then either chop into settler or stonehenge after the chariot completes
if into settler we can always double chop, then whip overflow into stonehenge?

Lewwyn is offline. Messages you send will be delivered when Lewwyn comes online.
tl;dr version: we discussed possibly grabbing a stonehenge and moved city #4 to the wines spot, which we now know has grassland cows 2nd of the wine. you'll see it when lewwyn posts the turn report. also we will want sailing soon, we have at least 2 decent island cities to found for IC routes.

as for war, we also talked each other out of it. lewwyn is worried about crashing our economy for more than 4 chariots. I'm not, but I'm concerned about the logistics - azza has no military now, but he has massive MFG, a level 6 capital, and slavery. which means he probably has copper already and could easily get 2-3 spears out if needed in his capital.
also he has a warrior on a hill across the lake from the Odyssey (founded since reload) and it would be difficult to sneak around it from east of the lake. attacking west of the lake is not really an option, too many forests near his capital in that direction.

we may have a sneaky chariot to strike in case azza tries to settler the gold/rice region between our two empires. I'm also not opposed to sending 2-3 chariots in to harass azza and pillage his pigs. this could work well if he doesnt have horses (hit, run, hide - the highland way), but probably better after iron working so we can keep him away from the iron smile.

I'd be surprised if Serdoa isn't aiming for Stonehenge too. Although I'd have tried to get it earlier than now if I was him, so I could be wrong...

well we don't have a plan yet. and honestly I would prefer judaism for culture. I got a ton of free spreads in my SP using the same settings, and this might be the last time we get a chance at founding a religion (eventually we'll get a spread from serdoa, but since we haven't even identified his borders yet that will likely be awhile).

plus OR will be very helpful as well.

that said, if stonehenge sits around too long, it will be useful just for the great prophet. I can't understand how with 4 other IND civs no wonders have fallen yet. quite strange.
