OK, I think I found a simple solution to this. By changing when we put two turns into a worker at Big Slick, we can time it so that Big Slick reaches size 4 on T54, with 6/120 into a forge and 4/35 into an axeman. If national security allows, we can two-pop whip the forge as in my original microplan. If we need an axe, we two-pop whip that instead, finish the worker, grow back to size 4 on the forge and then whip that, overflowing into a second worker. Compared to whipping the forge first, this costs us 13 hammers but gives us the axe four turns earlier.
This modified plan with extra flexibility on T54 only costs us 1 hammer compared to the original microplan, as long as we actually whip the forge on T54.
EDIT: I updated the micro plan with these changes.

Thanks for the comments, Kylearan. I find it amazing that we're nearly up to 500 posts in the thread and we're not even at turn 50 yet.
I put this down to:
(i) Two turnplayers making sure that each other knows what is going on. (Well, technically three, but athlete as been our wise sage rather than rolling his sleeves and getting his hands dirty.)
(ii) Liking pictures in threads as it gives the readers a good sense of what is going on. I never like text only threads.
(iii) Idylly waiting for the save to come back round.
(iv) Being new to this PBEM lark.
(v) Becoming entranced by C&D.
(vi) Having nothing better to do.

Rival power increased 17k. 10k from GW (Ruff), -1k from a whip (TT), and 8k worth of units. TT whipped his size 2 city down to size 1. No techs were discovered.

What happened to Pegasus' power graph? Is he still top power?

A quick look at the power chart:
Pegasus's power did not change. I think that means we have a new power leader with 45k, and that TT is on a rampage. Ad Hoc did not finish any units, he's probably building a settler and his power is 26k. Ruff built the Great Wall so he did not finish any units. So TT completed two Impis, one of which was one-pop whipped in his second city. Sounds pretty aggressive to me.
Now I could be mistaken as I've lost somewhat track of the individual player's power. We could work it out by checking our C&D archives. I don't think I can be bothered though, this is hopefully someone elses's problem.
EDIT: Heh, this was actually a crosspost. Great minds think alike and all that...
