Founded our 8th city. The empire is filling out quite nicely.
Heroic Epic due next turn in Aybabtu. National Epic due in ~5 turns in Pwnage. Things are definitely looking up.
Should we whip Double Rainbow next turn? It'll finish the Stele, which will speed up border expansion and consequently speed up access to the second Gold. It's a difference of ~6 turns compared to not whipping, i.e. ~50 beakers from the Gold in return for a few beakers lost from the flood plain cottages.

Sorry, been away for a while. Yeah, whipping it seems like a good plan this time.

Decided not to whip in the end. After calculating more carefully, we're not going to run out of good tiles (i.e. flood plains) fast enough for us to particularly need the second Gold a few turns earlier. Having it in ~15 turns with the slow-build will be perfectly fine.
The major news for this turn: Heroic Epic is in. Awesome... 1 turn 2 promo units, here we come.
Two border expansions due next turn, at Pwnage and Dramatic Beaver. That'll improve our visibility of the barbarian north a bit.
National Epic is due in on T107 in Pwnage, 4 turns away. Should be getting our first Great Person either on that turn or the next one, almost certainly a Great Scientist. Looking forward to that Academy.
We'll be likely to generate quite a few Great Scientists over the next few dozen turns, especially if we run a couple of scientists in Pwnage as well. It'll be 30 GPP's per turn with 2 scientists, the Great Library and National Epic - very juicy indeed. Might want to think about whether we want to get another Academy or two, or consider a bulbing plan.

The Great Scientist tech preference list, for our reference:
Main attractive options that aren't overly tricky to achieve are Education, Printing Press, Philosophy, and Astronomy.

Build one academy then bulb, that is unless we have another massive commerce city. In that case we might want to consider a second academy, but I think bulbs give better pay-off.
Education, PP and Philo first, then maybe Astro. Not sure about astro on a Pangea-map anyway.

Well, we do have the 5 flood plains + 2 gold city (Double Rainbow). That would benefit significantly from an Academy. Though bulbing is certainly very powerful, so we'll have to weight up the pros and cons of the options closer to the time. We definitely want to use the first one for an Academy in the soon-to-be-capital with the Great Library regardless, so at least that's easy enough.
Astronomy will probably prove to be quite useful for us, if only for defence. Yes it's a pangaea map, but our empire in particular borders a lot of coast, and would perhaps be a bit vulnerable to a naval invasion later. On the flipside, we might be in quite an excellent position to build a formidable navy and go conquering later ourselves. Either way, I think Astronomy will definitely not be a tech we want to delay for too long, once that time of the game comes.
As an aside - it's also worth considering that it's now fairly likely our UU will see the light of day, so Gunpowder will be quite an attractive tech at some point.

Our first event of the game... and it was actually a nice one.
Options were a simple +116 beakers to Metal Casting, or spending 38 gold for a 50% chance of +232 beakers to Metal Casting.
I figured what the heck, and chose the second option... and we got lucky!
So, we now have pretty much 1/3 of the beakers towards Metal Casting (232/775). Might want to consider finishing that off at some point... it'd mean half price Forges for +1 happiness across the empire. Not too shabby at all.
Good thing we didn't settle on that city ruin! Now I half wish we hadn't settled Double Rainbow overtop of the other city ruin nearby.
Out of curiousity, a question for any lurkers in the know - is it possible to get this same event twice for the same city ruin? Or once it's happened for a particular city ruin, is it impossible for it to strike there again?

I believe it is possible, yes. I know you can get other events multiple times for the same city (I've had slave revolts hit a city 2 and 3 times), so I'd say probably.

I have no particular reason to improve that tile anytime soon anyway, so will leave the ruins sitting there for now. If we get the event again at some later date, so much the better.
Not much going on this turn.
