Final Fantasy Legend 2 All Robots Part 9:  Sephiroth

Final Dungeon did not deserve the title after 4 Robots with 154 Agility sped through it.  They didn't need money anymore after selling unnecessary equipment from Nasty Dungeon, and they didn't gain stats from combat.  So they retreated from every encounter, and even an "unexpected attack" failed to do any harm.  WarMach was the nominal boss, but when each CatClaw was hitting for over 1600 damage, it didn't live up to the Final Fantasy 1 name.  WarMach shut down after two rounds, and didn't even hit anyone with an attack.

Apollo was impossible.  I'll write about his attack patterns to give you an idea, since MANY attempts failed against him.  Apollo spends the first few rounds blocking all attacks with his Aegis MAGI.  When the music changes, he can attack with either the Masmune or Flare.  Masmune is the "best" result since it hits a single target for around 538-597.  Flare melts the entire Robot team for 652-711.  Dad can sometimes use his Heal staff to keep them alive for a couple of rounds, but eventually everyone dies except for him.  Dad then Cures himself to hold on to life, but then croaks after more Flares.

Each CatClaw gashes Apollo for around 790-812 damage.  Is there a superior Agility weapon the Robots can get?  Is there any Mana armor available for them?  Dad's main equipment can't be altered, but I managed to give him a NukeBomb.

Apollo is Sephiroth before Final Fantasy 7.  He's the main antagonist of the game, he wields a "Masamune", he has long flowing hair, and his motivation is to become God.  tongue

Final Fantasy Legend 2 All Robots VICTORY:  Raiders of the Lost Ark

There was still one thing I hadn't tried against Apollo:  the power of Heart.  The only MAGI the party had left contained the power to resurrect and fully heal the entire team.  Combined with Dad's Heal staff, this gave the Robots enough time to hack at Apollo with CatClaws until his body started to melt.  He couldn't become a true God without Heart!  DATA was already dead at this point, and Apollo's last attack of the battle was a 539 Masmune swing to ROBO.

Apollo exploded, but Dad sacrificed himself again to save the Robots.  But he spent even less time in the afterlife than the average Final Fantasy 4 character.  The Egyptian goddess Isis restored him to life, shrunk down to the size of a player character, then joined the team.  She had 999 HP and 99 in every other stat, unlimited Masmune and Aegis charges, 1 Heart charge, and 5 Flare spells.

This sounded like overkill until I realized I couldn't run away from any random encounters in the last area of the game!  5 Flares wiped out enemy parties, but ran out quickly and could only be restored with a Tent.  Anyone trying an Legend 2 challenge should smuggle in as many Tents as they can before fighting Apollo!

There were several minibosses like a TianLung group, but these were highly variable.  Multiple tornadoes were enough to blow the Robots away, so I had to reset until only 1 of the dragons appeared.  Isis the goddess struck it down with a 517 Masmune slice.

An "unexpected attack" by Sylph also forced a reset, since they could cast Tornado.  Eventually I resorted to taking multiple steps forward, saving, and resetting if I got an encounter.  This allowed the group to limp to the true final boss Arsenal.

Isis the goddess had to leave the party to battle the other Arsenal, so the 4 Robots had to do it without any guests.  Cat Claws dented Arsenal for around 790-850s damage per hit.  It had 4 Cannons that fired per round, but CatClaws destroyed them and weakened Arsenal's overall damage output.  In the middle of the battle, as the random battle music played, Arsenal always whiffed with Smasher.

In the final phase of the fight, Arsenal opened the Smasher port and blasted the entire party.  The initial salvo struck for 333-603 damage, but on later rounds Smasher seemed to weaken to 135-207.

I thought the Robot team would choke in the final battle, but it only took 5 tries to win.  Arsenal's damage output was so variable that only DEMI died to Smasher.  DATA, ROBO, and WREN suffered 405, 315, and 117 damage respectively.  On the next round, WREN's CatClaw made Arsenal malfunction for 826 damage!

In the ending, Dad wanted to leave to find the Lost Ark, but DATA and Mom insisted on coming with him this time.  He agreed, so it least it wasn't an excuse to be an absentee dad like Mark Trail.

SystemError also won a 4 Robot challenge, but did it differently by occasionally using Strength weapons like Gungnir.  I stuck with Agility the whole way through.  Robots with 7 CatClaws can defeat Arsenal with some luck.  Hope T-Hawk and other Realms Beyonders enjoyed the playthrough!

There will be a similar "mono species" challenge for Legend 3, but I have to figure out which one to use.  It probably won't be Robots since those work like Legend 1 humans, and Cyborgs seem closest to Legend 2 robots.  Maybe Monster or Beast?

That's the best laugh I've had all day!  Maybe I'll change my signature.   lol

But don't forget the Pa/Po.  tongue

Legend 3 seems to be the odd one of the series.  It has conventional leveling and MP instead of Fire Emblem spell books if my reading hasn't deceived me.  If you're a Beast or Monster, you cycle through different species as you level up.  That ought to be interesting.  Supposedly Beasts are martial arts users while Monsters are more defensive and rely on special moves.

Final Fantasy Legend 2 All Mutants Part 1:  Welcome to Die

I played the early areas of Legend 3 today, but found the game dull compared to Legend 1 and 2.  So here's a new challenge!

Mutants in Legend 2 are quite different from Robots.  Their equipment works like a normal RPG, instead of being the sole factor for their stats.  Mutants can randomly gain stats after battle based on their actions, which will be familiar to Final Fantasy 2 players.

What really makes Mutants distinctive is their ability system.  They can randomly learn up to 4 active and passive abilities, and automatically forget the last one on the list if they learn a new one.  Fortunately, you can switch their places on the equipment screen to avoid losing Flare or something.  Think of Mutants as a weird version of Pokemon where you can learn the same technique more than once and sacrifice attack slots for Immunity or Limber.

Since it was a comic book Mutant challenge, it was mandatory to have X-Men references.  JEAN, EMMA, KURT, and REMY were chosen because I looked up X-Men characters on Wikipedia to find names with 4 characters.  Unlike Robots, Mutants have gender which does affect their starting loadout.  Male Mutants have more Strength a Hammer, and the Blizzard spell, while female Mutants have better Agility, a Bow, and the Flame spell.

I wanted to avoid having Mr. S "steal" all the potential stat gains from the Mutants, so I had him cast Dissolve to hit only one enemy at a time.  Flame and Blizzard targeted every enemy on screen and destroyed the wildlife in Cave of North.  JEAN got O Poison and EMMA got Cure after a trivial encounter with 1 Spider, 1 Skelton, and 1 Jaguar.  Cure had enough PP to provide cheap healing.  Another battle with that enemy party got the group target spell Ice for JEAN and 9 HP for REMY.

Mr. S defeated BabyWyrm with Fire, and I had the other Mutants select Bow in hopes of gaining Agility.  It didn't work, but EMMA learned the group spell Thunder.

The X-Men bought Bronze equipment in First Town, and Bows for the men.  Didn't have any more luck gaining Agility with Bow attacks against Gang and Asigaru enemies, so I ditched physical attacks in favor of Mutant magic again.  EMMA forgot her O Poison immunity and learned Ice.

Enemies in Legend 2 have elemental weaknesses, as you'd expect from a Kawazu game.  He was the one who introduced the concept to Final Fantasy 1, after all.  In "relics of the ancient gods", Toad was weak to Blizzard and took 57 damage compared to 34 vs. a Fungus group.  Lizards were cold-blooded and therefore weak to Jean's Ice spell for 79 damage.  Flies were also susceptible to cold.  Overall, this dungeon was a minor obstacle to the Mutants.

While walking back to Ki's temple, EMMA zapped a Spider with Thunder.  She forgot Ice and learned Warning, which I think protects against ambushes.  Not so useful in a game where you can save anywhere.  In a bizarre incident, EMMA lost Warning and gained. . .Warning after a battle with 3 Gangs.  Not only can you learn the same ability twice, but you can forget it and instantly relearn it.  It reminds me of a Missingno with 2 Water Gun slots while I was messing around with Pokemon Red/Blue glitches.

Ashura's Base was not much more challenging than "relics of the ancient gods".  EMMA forgot Warning and gained another Cure after fighting 3 Asigarus and 1 Spider.  This was used over the first Cure to save PP.  No point in conserving magic charges when it's going to be forgotten within a few battles, right?  REMY learned Fire after one encounter and moved it above his 2 O Poisons.  JEAN learned Warning and Kurt gained 7 HP after a battle with 3 Goblins.

KURT got the Silver gloves from a chest since he had the lowest HP.  Rhino the "boss" of Ashura's Base gored REMY with Tusk for 115 damage and killed him on the first turn.  EMMA jolted it with a 98 damage Thunder and JEAN hit Rhino's weakness with Ice for 81.  Ki blocked with her Bronze shield to try to give stat gains for the Mutants.  JEAN's max HP rose by 12.

Monsters in Ashura's World were noticeably harder to defeat since they were faster.  To prepare for the future, I bought Rapiers in Desert Town in hopes of gaining Agility.  Don't know if higher enemy difficulty makes it more likely to get stat increases.  EMMA lost Cure and learned O Poison.  Two Flowers attacked in Desert Town, causing JEAN to gain Mana and EMMA to replace O Poison with Warning.  All these notifications may look boring in print, but it's meant to give you an indication of how chaotic Mutants can be.  Pokemon will probably feel like a toned down version of Final Fantasy Legend 2 from here on out!

Final Fantasy Legend 2 All Mutants Part 2:  In Which The Player Characters Are Useless In A Boss Fight

The X-Men spent some time fighting battles in Desert Town to gain more HP.  Agility was a lost cause at this point since the Rapiers barely did any damage.  Perhaps later in the game I'll have them equip Laser swords and go back to earlier worlds.  Before setting out for Ashura's tower, the party purchased Silver helmets and gloves.

Silver equipment was worth the money when Beetles attacked the Mutants for "No damage!".  Most battles were simple when repeated Flame and Blizzard casts could wipe out the whole field.  Thunder, Fire, and Blizzard were used to conserve all-target PP against "smaller" encounters like 5 Beetles.  Five of any enemy would NOT have been minor to the Robots since they had to rely on single target attacks.  If there's one advantage Mutants have over Robots, it's crowd control.

Still, with low Agility and the possibility of stat gains, the Mutants had to fight every battle and didn't have the luxury of the Robot retreat.  Occasionally the party gained Mana, but KURT didn't learn any new spells.  EMMA swapped out abilities constantly, however.  Is there a hidden stat that affects Mutant power turnover, or is it just luck?

Mask the guest character must have been designed with Mutant only challenges in mind.  I discovered the hard way that Ashura was immune to all 3 spell elements!  Rapiers were pointless when they only had 4-5 Agility to work with.  Mask pounded Ashura with Hammer for around 143-149 damage per round, and all the Mutants could do was to take 6-Hits and sacrifice themselves for the guest.  Fortunately, Ashura wasted a round trying to put KURT to Sleep, leaving him as the sole survivor of the Mutant party.  No one gained any stats.

Are there other bosses that are immune to all of the Fire/Ice/Thunder elements?  If so, I'd better start training Agility.

Final Fantasy Legend 2 All Mutants Part 3:  Friends With Odin

Starting in Giants' World, the difficulty increased dramatically.  Now I realized that T-Hawk was right about Robots being the easiest species to use!  There was a way out of the Mutants' Agility growth woes, however.  The shop in this dimension sold Gold bows, which ignored the Mutants' stats and hit generally for 250s-310s damage.  That was enough to kill any regular enemy in Giants' World or inside Ki's body.  Bows are a waste for Robots since they're better off using their Agility for light swords and daggers, but they're helpful in this challenge.

Some Mutants acquired Steal while searching the abandoned giant houses, which I never used.  Battles in Legend 2 are too cutthroat to justify wasting a turn.  One side effect of the risk was extra stat gains, especially in HP.  They needed all the health and Cure charges they could get, since it was common to see at least one Mutant drop dead in Ki's body.  Robo-28's Rockets and Partisan's Pistol were dangerous if they targeted a single Mutant multiple times, and my party was still too slow to outrun enemies.  Spells like Flame and Blizzard were used if facing many enemies, and Fire/Ice/Thunder eliminated hardier groups like Cobbles.  Amoebas were weak to Thunder.

As soon as the party found a MAGI in Ki's bloodstream, they walked out and returned to First Town to heal.  This caution wasn't enough, as Odin had to resurrect them about 3 times total.

The 5 Phagocyt "boss" encounter in Ki's head was a good opportunity to gain Agility with Gold bows.  Wind Up paralyzed KURT and EMMA with Wind Up, which would have been impossible in the Robot challenge.  KURT's skin was partially Dissolved in the first round for 113 damage.  Each Gold arrow shot down a Phagocyt for about 230 damage, so it only took 2 turns to win.  KURT and JEAN earned some Agility after their victory.

Final Fantasy Legend 2 All Mutants Part 4:  Making Fun Of Bad Advice On The Internet

Before I write about 4 Mutants vs. Apollo's World, let's laugh at someone who thinks 4 Robots is one of the worst parties on RPGClassics:

"This team must depend totally on the items because the members can't become powerful at all. Lack of money will be their main problem. As you proceed through the game, it will be more and more difficult to purchase new weapons. They also lack quick movement and, half way into the game, they tend to be defeated more easily by the enemy monsters."

Clearly the user had never thought of CatClaws.  It's true that Robots don't gain stats like other species, but Agility and HP are sufficient to make it through the game.  "Quick movement" isn't an issue when you have 154 Agility by equipping weapons.  Money is their "main problem", but later on you can sell surplus equipment from dungeons.

EDIT:  RPGClassics is quoting the Legend 2 manual here.  The rest of the manual is surprisingly good, and even offers a short walkthrough up through finding the Micron in Giants' World.

Back to our regularly scheduled stupid challenge playthroughs:

Apollo's World was much easier for the Mutants than Ki's bloodstream.  Hofud swords weren't as irritating for Mutants as they were for Robots, since they couldn't block spells.  Hermes shoes in the southern entrance to Dunatis's dungeon went to JEAN and gave her substantial Defense and Agility bonuses.

Flame and Blizzard destroyed larger enemy parties as always, while group spells defeated Hofuds.  Gold bows killed smaller encounters for Agility growth.  KURT replaced one Fire with Blitz, which sounded like a more advanced Thunder spell.  What it did instead was debuff enemy Agility with low accuracy.  Back to the bottom of the Mutant ability list it went!

The one enemy to hide from at all costs was Medusa, who could petrify the Mutants.  Their Agility was high enough to run away on the first try if necessary, since Legend 2 wasn't cruel enough to require Robot stats for that.

The X-Men shut down Dunatis on the first turn with Gold arrows, but I reset a few times hoping for Flare.  Dunatis is classified as a high rank enemy and is therefore good for learning new Mutant powers if you don't mind resetting.  Eventually the RNG settled on Touch for REMY and StonGaze for EMMA.  I looked up some advice on GameFAQs, and the consensus was that StonGaze was great for instantly killing groups of enemies.

This advice was not as correct as I'd hoped.  StonGaze worked well against some monsters like Jellies and WyrmKids, but sometimes missed Tortoises.  Hofuds were immune if my memory is correct.  While the Mutants were spelunking in the underwater volcano and "blinding light" cave, they preferred Flame and Blizzard for consistency.  Touch was a "Drain" type spell that was weaker than group target abilities.

Gold helmets were available in the seaside town, and I had the money to spare.  The rest of the Mutants' war chest went to replacement Gold bows and X-Cures in case the Mutants ran out of Cure spells.

Final Fantasy Legend 2 All Mutants Part 5:  Eye Of The Gorgon

When the "new god" minions invaded Guardian's Base, it became obvious that the next few areas would be similar to Ki's body.  MechBugs fired SMGs at the party for 213 damage and lashed with Blitz whips for 199, but Gold arrows could shoot them down.  JEAN learned StonGaze after one such fight.

I saved and reset in front of an Ogre miniboss in hopes of getting a good Mutant power, but there was no Flare.  Explode appeared once, but that was a suicide ability and I didn't want that.

It helped that Bodach sheet ghosts were weak to fire, but they were also susceptible to StonGaze.  P-Worms could also be petrified.  StonGaze's low accuracy caused a Game Over against a party of 7 Bodaches on the way back to Pillar of Sky.  Bodach loved to drain HP with Touch and put Mutants to sleep.

Ninja's Katana cut down REMY for 324 power, while Gold arrows only dealt 95 damage.  EMMA's Flame and KURT's Fire roasted the Ninja for 132-162 damage and saved Lynn.

Venus's World was too tough for Gold bows, so the party spent most of its time casting Flame and Blizzard.  Foes like WereWolves, Claymen, and Hornets were fast too, so chances are there was another Agility threshold that my Mutants didn't cross.  Venus's city sold Army chest armor, a significant improvement over the Bronze gear the X-Men had worn for most of the game.

Cure spells or X-Cure potions had to be used after practically every fight in the sewers.  Bodach's Touch drained around 190 from a Mutant in particular.  Hermit the "miniboss" was immune to fire.  Ice spells were effective, but StonGaze was a wasted action.

Mephisto and Phantom guarded fake treasure chests, and were unusually hard since they were out-of-depth monsters.  Mephisto was immune to fire while Phantom was weak to it.  Gold arrows and Blizzard managed to deal with this encounter once, but the team had a chat with Odin in this and other battles.

Warrior skeletons in the volcano were weak to fire, a nice change from all those monsters in the sewers.  Random encounters were so frequent that the Mutants were running out of all-target spells when they reached the end.  So they had to run away from a few fights.  Magicians cast Sleep if the X-Men were lucky, or Fire for 326 damage if they weren't.  Tusk from a Serpent bit for 124 damage, and often appeared with Magician backup.  Ogres Kicked the X-Men for 114-177 damage and tended to appear with Triceras who were weak to ice.

The battle with Venus was a farce!  Neither Fire, Ice, nor Thunder could strike her, much like Ashura.  Her Charm didn't care about gender since EMMA was the first to be confused.  At this point, I thought defeat was certain, so I just fast-forwarded for a few rounds as the characters cast their useless spells.  EMMA shot REMY with a Gold arrow for 110 damage, while Venus only suffered a pinprick for 60 damage.

Eventually I realized that StonGaze generated "Nothing happened" messages, suggesting that it missed.  That meant Venus wasn't immune.  EMMA destroyed the goddess of beauty with the power of ugliness.  Who designs an RPG where regular Black Magic fails, but Death succeeds?  Kawazu!

Final Fantasy Legend 2 All Mutants Part 6:  Eye of the Watcher

Didn't expect to have so much trouble in the dragon races, but that's what happens when you get complacent after playing with Robots.

Magicians littered the track and were as threatening as ever.  Piranhas were immune to fire for some reason, but could be hit with Thunder or an unreliable StonGaze.  A battle for a piece of MAGI with 5 Adamants was fatal.  Tusk gored JEAN for 276.  Two Bashes bludgeoned KURT for 254-261, and finished off REMY for 220.  Gas suffocated EMMA in another attempt.

All my Mutants could do was to grind in Race World's map and buy some new equipment.  Giant gloves from Venus's World increased Defense, and Dragon armor offered elemental immunities like in Legend 1.  An experiment with Laser swords was a miserable failure when KURT and REMY scratched a Clayman and a WereWolf in Venus's World for 28-56 damage.  Even Gold bows were better than that!

REMY acquired StonGaze after some random battle, and after a few more encounters it was off to the races.  Dragon armor apparently guarded the Mutants from Adamant's Gas attack, and EMMA stared them down with StonGaze when it hadn't worked before.  Is there a flat chance for it to work, or does higher Mana increase the odds?  EMMA the "Gorgon" murdered the next fixed encounter with Lamias the same way.

It took five tries to defeat a later mandatory battle with Watchers.  These floating eyeballs seared Mutants with 400-488 power Beams, and refused to be petrified no matter how many times EMMA and friends stared them down.  Did you know that if you die on the racetrack, the dragon appears in Odin's palace?  tongue

Flame, Fire, Thunder, and Blizzard were enough to send the Watchers to the optometrist.  Only JEAN and KURT survived the battle, but the frustration was worth it when KURT learned P-Blast.  P-Blast seemed to be a non-elemental version of the all-target Flame and Blizzard spells, useful when confronting anything with immunities such as a "new god".

How will the Mutants fare against the Magnate, who gave even the Robots pause?
