I can confirm that the CP does indeed cast create item and create artifact in 1.40n. Saw it with Detect Magic.

How does your bot work? Thanks. It's really rough and basic. It doesn't inject dlls or anything; it is just an autohotkey loop that checks and reacts to onscreen pixel colors to actually play through the game and reload etc. After stashing the item, it saves the game, grabs the info on the item from the hex data in the save file, and appends it to a text.
Using your tweaker I just cranked the number of spellbooks up to 12 in every color, like a Merchant. It might have some funny results to report tomorrow.

Good point.
It doesn't mean they are still somewhere on the map, since they are typically recycled.
The save game also contains an array of 250 bytes with 0 and 1 indicating whether a prefab item has ever entered the game.
In the tweaker you can see which items are registered as "in use".
For instance in the table with itemdata properties, I have added the rightmost column "InGame" which indicates if a prefab item has ever made its appearance.
Note that apart from that, there is also a table of items that are actually on the map somewhere in the game.

Pretty much everything was found this time— this settles the relationship between books and lair treasure I think.
If I can draw your attention down to the bottom of the list, note all the usual suspects from the first trial (like "shield of eros" and "light mail shirt") failed to appear. I would guess that they'd start showing up again in a different game or maybe even a different lair, because i've seen them all before ofc. Also the items with merging predictably remained absent.
But finally I got things like haste, phantasmal, chaos, and regen to drop. Check it out.
I want to ask you ILSe, you're certain the spellbook requirements given by your ITEMDATA.xls are correct? I looked in the LBX file, so I think I can see where these values are coming from, but it's just that they're weird in 1.31. No item requires a Death spellbook. Only 13 items require nature books. Something like the "shield of transformation" (wraithform, magic immunity) - it requires 5 sorcery and 4 chaos books. If this is true, no wonder the item mechanics are a disaster.

Oh, a question if I were planning on tweaking enchanting to add more variety: does anyone know whether it would cause bugs for a character to have more than one item with spell charges? (i.e. adding spell charges to the misc category or something).

It took me the longest time to figure out what these extra numbers in ITEMDATA.LBX meant.
It's only in the last release of the Tweaker (a couple of months ago) that I had tentatively added them.
Indeed - they look so weird.
Actually, when Anthony remarked they matched the powers exactly, that should have tipped me off immediately. Ah well.
Now that I have so thoroughly analyzed the code, I'm sure.
I think it might be intentional they are so weird.
It means you can find items that you cannot make yourself.
And won't find too many items that you can make yourself anyway.
For instance, a Life wizard can find all items with death specials.
But a Death wizard won't find any items with life specials.
Could be intended...
With the changes made in Insecticide, finding items has become quite bland.
You can only find cheap items that you can easily make yourself.
Where is the fun in that?
I think it should be reverted.

I seem to recall I've had 2 items with a spell, both showing up in my spell book as being an Item.
So I think it works.

You know, I was thinking something like that this morning when compiling the results for display here, but to have it articulated like this, it does end up making sense. I don't know whether the screwy book requirements were intentional (I doubt they were, considering the total lack of Death books), but the unpredictability can be a great effect.
I'm really glad you walked me through this stuff and I hope the effort could prove useful for insecticide and the tweaker. Looking forward to that.

You can add spell charges to a Misc when casting Create Artifact in 1.31, but you'd have to mod the game data to get the spell charge to work.

(This won't work in v1.31.)
I'm going to try this now.
I have checked that my "fix" for Insecticide works.
You still won't find the most powerful items, since lairs never have items of value over 2500.
But any item up to a cost of 2500 can be found now.
That leaves 41 items cannot be found in a lair, but they can come from a merchant or from the gods.

Here is some silliness that popped in a verified "failed special". Selection of items was really limited. Ranked in order of mana cost, because it almost looks like a limit to the cost is applying here. I really have no idea how he failed specials are resolved... bbviously, it's using the book requirements plus some extra restriction.
Changed the books to 7 chaos 6 life with Tweaker, which would in theory still allow 206 items to show up.

Now I need to go back over last week's data, where I saw a lot of expensive items coming from what I could have sworn was a "failed special". Maybe I was wrong about it or something...
