[Spoilers] Defining the phrase "€˜Hung Like a Horse"€™: Pb & the Kuriotates

Maksim Wrote:I was thinking 4N 1E of Kwythellar, which would become unavailable if c5 were moved 1 west.

True, but it can be placed 3N 2E instead:

Jabah Wrote:One trick with settlement is making them work one of your (main city) cottage, but that is without connection to priesthood (and except if you chop a forrest, won't apply to c5).
Maksim Wrote:Well, if you build a camp there, then the citizen can work it, and between the camp and the base tile, you will have, even when quartered, a bit of extra commerce.
This is all made irrelevant once you get a ToK into the settlement, and can change the citizen to be a merchant, directly generating gold for the gold god.
The timing is dependent on when you get Priesthood and feel safe enough to start spamming Priests for no greater purpose than building ToK in every settlement.
The other reason you are going for a one-tile-off-the-coast city is that it allows you to squeeze one extra settlement to its south-west (NE of capital) when you have a spare settler\priest pair.
Do I get a cookie?
Profane Wrote:I don't know... if the settlement is placed 1W of c5 instead of on it, can't the same number of settlements be squeezed in?
I can squeeze 7 settlements between the 4 megacities if c5 is in either position. Unless... there's a better configuration i'm not seeing that allows for 8?
I'm thinking c4 and c5 are placed at their respective locations so that RoK and ToK can be spread and built a turn sooner.
I think you all deserve half a cookie, because you're all nearly there.

Basically I'm quite partial to building settlements around my commerce cities, particularly the (future) capital, so that they can work a cottage for free early on.
The commerce is still reduced, but it helps speed up the transition to Kurio Enclaves, particularly when the capital is working the max amount anyway.
It will also allow me to get the sub-optimal cottages upgraded, eg non riverside grassland, plains cottages etc without impacting Caledor.

That's dependent on Priesthood, because once I can start forcing in temples, a much better use of that one pop is on a merchant/scientist specialist.

Going by the image above, you can see I've already got a cottage in place for c2 (1W 1NW) that Caledor is not working. (Caledor is working the Wheat, Deer, Sheep, Gl farm, the riverside Silks and 4 cottages. There's still several unworked cottages , -zero- mines being utilised and the other Silks.)
I can also have c2 work the riverside plains cottage (1W 1SW) if I feel like it.

Similarly for c5 I'll have it work a riverside plains cottage 1E of the mana node.
Settlement workable areas are the usual BFC, not expanded Kurio BFCs, so c4 has to go in it's currently flagged location to work a cottage 1SW of the Wheat.

None of those locations will affect Caledor negatively or take tiles away from it.
I'm not yet counting how many settlements I can cram in - I intend to expand outwards before backfilling to simply build more temples.

Short answer:
Use settlements to work cottages up for megacities.
Dependent on Priesthood because it's more efficient to run merchant specialists.
Uncertainty about when I'll reach Priesthood leads to uncertainty about settlement locations.
I'm assuming that these maintenance costs will continue to bite and Settler production in Avelorn will outpace research (next up is Drama).

I had to look that second word up, hadn't come across it before (even though I could guess what it meant). lol
How strange, how can you have a word that describes a fear of Sharks and Cats at the same time?!?

I also just realised that the above image is a sneak preview from T116.
I'm getting sloppy! smoke

On a related note, do settlements have a megacity BFC, a regular one, or a crappy level 1 culture one?

lol

I regular one, hence c4.

Edit:

Profane Wrote:Well, i'm currently out of ideas, but maybe another tiny reason could be the benefit of roading less (in the case of c5), thus allowing your workers to do other more important work.
I think you've missed my post.
Read up. smile

EDIT:
Ah, the cookie. Wasn't there before. lol
And I momentarily forgot about the cottage-working. Disregard my post.

I favour the filler settlement between Caledor and Kwythellar being on the road, so it can get some cultural defenses and help blunt a big raider push.

Turn 116:

According to the log Selrahc’s GA ended this turn, while Sareln founded FoL in his ice city.

Currently selected is the newly christened worker Bob Carlyle, fresh produced at Avelorn and is heading up to Caledor to help out there.

Meanwhile the first Kurio settlement was founded at c1 and named Diso.
You can see I’ve already assigned the tiles 1W and 1S to Karond Kar.

Regarding settlement naming scheme:
pocketbeetle Wrote:Seeing as the last naming scheme got busted by someone on the very first warrior, I’ve decided to make the next SUPER difficult.
As in, those-under-the-age-of-20-need-not-apply-it’s-going-to-be-so-damn-obscure.
Anyone found Googling will be shot!
Now, I know it may have sounded like I was going overboard with the hyperbole there.
But if someone gets it from the first settlement I will freaking leap off a building, because clearly you’ve kidnapped me at some point and stuck probes in my head.
Moving swiftly on….

Kwythellar produced its first ferocious Hunter unit this turn, a fearsome dervish of destruction named ummm…Pixiefoot? <<Editor’s note: Wtf? This can’t be right.>>

She’s off to cover c2 and explore the Bear-infestation in the North.

Clicking end turn meant Kwythellar produced another Hunter, Caledor and Karond Kar grew, Avelorn produced a Settler.

Also worth noting is that Selrahc’s diplo screen gained a bunch of animal resources (so I guess he researched AH) and a new city: Let it Snow.

And since I haven’t done anything clever recently, how about this:

Screenshot on the left is from 2 turns ago, play a game of spot the difference.
I tried doing it with Cull also when he settled his third city, no luck.

Demographics:

Seems like everyone gained score this turn.
  • Sareln: 22 points, obviously the FoL tech.
  • Selrahc: 11 points, almost certainly the AH tech.
  • Cull: 6 points, pop growth?
  • Iskender: 11 points, tech?
  • Bob: 18 points. Pop growth plus tech?

No idea what tech it could be.
The Calabim GNP has been in the toilet due to unit supply and declaring war on Iskender.
Combined with it being only 8 turns since the last tech, means he can’t have researched something big.
If I had to guess, I’d come up with the same answer I did last time, ie sub 240b and probably Masonry.
Think I’m going to have to give up on following Bob.

More importantly, Stirrups completes next turn! *chorus of heavenly angels sing*
