[PB78] Dreylin boldly goes

There is an old memory leak in the server code, where connections aren't properly closed if you just exit out. However, Ramk & Zulan has applied a fix that closes unused connections, so it's not strictly necessary anymore but it's still good form to exit to main menu.

As long as there is no turn-split going on you're free to log in after ending your turn, either for pictures, checking stuff or even changing your mind.

Played two turns in a row. First, moved scout to NE hill, which had a railroad in place. Next turn I followed the road towards east and found this:

Many pre-placed improvements lying around, including villages on desert or PH. That barbarian mace is held in position. South of the barbarian is a fresh water lake with an oasis, giving five food and four commerce. Next move for scout is to go south, towards that road in the forest tile? Demos:

Looking good.

I think the demos are looking positive for our plan. Top GNP at 22 is, I think someone (Thrawn?) running our plan A: AH-first with 2 pre-reqs and Fishing lake. 18 is no fishing or a first-row tech, and there have to be at least 2 of them to bring the average down to 19. The final I think could be from 18 to 20 to maintain the average, so is a bit of a question mark.

Was thinking about the tile usage after border pops, since the Ivory gives 4fh vs the lake’s 3. Switching gives us a 1t speed-up on the Worker, but only if we switch immediately or after 1t (I.e. once the Worker has 30/60 invested). Unfortunately my mental maths can’t do the technology side of the equation, so we’ll have to test it out when the time comes. I don’t think we want to delay the religion to speed the Worker, but once the tech timing is locked in we can switch to build some overflow into the next build (Quechua).

Turn 3

Scout keeps moving southeast and found another road:

Next turn move scout 1E on the roaded ruin tile, and then continue south following the road? The highlighted peak tile has visual effect of fallout, but the tile itself doesn’t mention it. Same goes for the other peaks found earlier. I guess founding a city close by will tell if the fallout is actually there?

About the demos: Is it possible that the top GNP of 22 is CRE player working identical tiles to us, and researching a religion tech? Just speculating here, I'm not used to digging around the demographics for accurate information this early.

Turns out, staring into a fire as the light fades is decent civ thinking time, though it’s a pity my mechanic’s knowledge is still a bit rusty. I think we need to keep working the lake until Poly is finished to keep it down to 10t - maybe 1t can be dropped, but switching to the Ivory loses us at least 3b/t due to rounding the pre-req multiplier.

I thought about the CRE possibility, but I still tend to think that the top is Thrawn following our other plan. Also if we’re the only SPI, then no-one else could take advantage of the early Religion so is less likely to go for it.

Anyway, still keeping fingers crossed!

Turn 5
Game is moving rapidly, played another back-to-back turns. Scout movement and capital border pop reveals:

Switching to ivory tile would slow down polytheism by 1 turn, so I kept working the forested lake. Scout will continue south, along the coast. Demos:

My instincts say that after Poly we can afford to go Hunting before AH to get the pre-req bonus, Worker would improve the Corn, then Ivory then Pigs. (Putting a turn into a Farm 1E of Kirk on the way to and from the Corn)

Looks like we might be able to switch for the last turn of Poly, but after Poly I think we work the Ivory to build some overflow while finishing the worker, then switch back to the lake to grow until the Corn is improved. I’d probably be messing with a micro sheet right now if I was home, but play by feel is good too.

I wonder how closely we want to follow scooter’s dotmap? I also note that if we settle 1E or 1SE of Corn we can put the Terrace bonus to use. OTOH, religion will give us 3rd ring pop fast so that could give us flexibility to settle our 1st ring of cities farther away.

I don't know what's needed to avoid losing a turn on the tech, but I do know dropping the lake will only cost 2b/t: You get 2b/t from the multiplier when the slider shows 9b/t because it's actually 10 (with the free "Sid's Beaker") and still 2b/t from the multiplier when the slider shows 11b/t (because 12 * 1.2 = 14.4, which rounds down to 14: The original 12, including the free beaker, plus two from the arrow prereq multiplier.)

It is not shown that well in the previous pictures, but settling 2N of the capital pigs (on the plainshill fort tile) would share the pigs and be next to a lake with clam. This would allow building a workboat for the lake? Not sure if this would be the best first expand location, but it would be blocking the northern mountain pass almost completely, if we worry about the raging barbs eventually.

Thanks Ref; the free beaker popped back in during last night’s musings!

I was looking North and thinking about how the Fort would allow WB access to the clam without having to settle specifically for it. I guess we’ll see what makes sense with some more visibility.
