Binding Blade Race

Chapter 4:

We have here a rather straightforward chapter. It's a straight shot to the boss and the side-objectives are only a little out of the way. There are two potential recruits on this map, but as I drafted neither I won't need to worry about them. There's just the horde of enemy cavalry between us and victory.

The villages however are most definitely worth it. The northeast ("1") village yields a Door Key - that's going to be surprisingly important later - which Merlinus can get for us. The north village holds a Steel Blade; an Angelic Robe, good for +7 HP, waits in the southwest.

First off there's this Cavalier/Nomad group to deal with. Marcus is the only unit who can double at 1-2 range, so after hitting up Wolt for a spare Javelin he charges forward. Roy is fast enough to double the Cavalier up north, so he positions himself to lure him. Allen and Shanna sit just out of range, while Lance grabs Chad's Lockpicks - he'll be visiting the Armory to buy some spare weapons.

On the enemy phase, Marcus killed the Nomad and redlined the two Cavaliers. Roy counterkilled his Cavalier, and after picking off one of the Cavs by Marcus he gets picked up by Allen. Shanna gets the other one, barely - 4 Strength suuuucks.

Marcus runs into in the range of pretty much all the Cavaliers on the map. They have a mix of Iron swords and lances; Marcus can't ORKO the Iron Sword Cavs without an extra point of strength (which he doesn't have) or the Silver Lance, but I don't want to waste 10 uses of it on these guys. Instead he equips an Iron Axe to build his weapon rank; he reaches D Axes either on this enemy phase or the next IIRC.

[Image: FE6_04_04.png][Image: FE6_04_05.png]
Everyone but the Nomad and two sword cavs perished - time to keep moving. Shanna takes the Cav south of Marcus, and Allen hands Roy off to her to ORKO the Nomad. Marcus takes out the Archer, at which point only two Cavaliers can get at Shanna. Even weighed down by Roy, she can handle them.

She even gets a Strength level off of the injured Cav! Shanna will live and die off her Strength growths - if she doesn't get enough she'll be relegated to ferrying, which is still valuable but not as much as ferrying and fighting.

Turn 4, and we're on the home stretch. Marcus kills an Archer sitting in front of the gate, and Allen trade-swaps him to a Hand Axe so he can counter the boss's Javelin throws. Shanna drops off Roy and blocks him from the eastmost Cavalier - the two of them could kill Roy if they both land.

At this point Lance reaches the Armory; he sells the Lockpicks for a cool 1000G and buys a Javelin, Iron Axe and two Hand Axes. Honestly I might have bought more, Marcus chews through them like candy.

[Image: FE6_04_08.png][Image: FE6_04_09.png]
Countering enemies gives levels to Roy and Allen. Allen's isn't so great but his first five more than make up for it.

[Image: FE6_04_10.png][Image: FE6_04_11.png]
Turn 5. Marcus slays the boss with double Silver Lance hits (that Speed! Never had a Marcus this good before), Shanna hits up the Angelic Robe village, and Allen gets some more XP. Clarine's been around since last turn, but with Roy out of range she'll remain unrecruited. Too bad! Rutger's also going to fall into limbo, as Roy seizes the turn before he'd appear.

Chapter 4 - 5/22 Turns
A 4-turn might be possible if Marcus burns his Silver Lance on the second enemy group, but even then I always had an Archer blocking the gate. I missed the Steel Blade village as well, but I can live without it. All in all this was a walk in the park next to Chapter 3, even if I once again had to rely on imperfect hit rates against the boss.

Chapter 4

We are headed to Laus.

Sounds like a guy you can trust.

[Image: tkbWim2.png] [Image: xms4xzY.png]

This rapey fuckface is harassing our healer. He's one of the Bern Wyvern Generals.
We'll get to kill him later, right? In any case, let's go save our first pick. She brings the sass, I like her already.

Deja vu? I've not played this game before, but I have played this map. In fact I got this map in our FE7 SG and it was a major pain.
This time we're not only limited in units, but also racing against the clock.

We've got a new unit: Clarine, the Troubadour. She's still in the castle though.
The three villages have a Door Key, Steel Blade and an Angelic Robe in them. The latter two are important to grab.
I'm hoping that there won't be reinforcements from behind, or those goddamn Pegasus Knights like last time. Would be hard to keep our non-drafted units out of combat.

Let's give it a few test runs.

Attempt #1, won in 7 turns. That was easy! Now we just need to optimize it.
Aaaand we're done, by the magic of reporting. Wasn't as hard as the FE7 version.

Marcus was given a Steel Axe and a Hand-Axe for this map. He equips the Steel Axe right away.
The idea with that is to get enemies to low HP with Marcus without killing them outright.
Deick went north to kill the lone cavalier. When the road is clear, Merlinus will head for the village.
We're skipping the village behind us. Just a Door Key there, not worth the turns lost.
Chad is heading south. He will avoid all combat this map, he's just there to visit the village.

Deick up! jive

[Image: aoZpe5I.png] [Image: ED4qcFZ.png]

Marcus drew in two cavaliers and injured them. Merlinus tanked a hit from the nomad.
Roy kills the nomad with his rapier. Deick kills one cavalier, Lugh the other.
Marcus rescues Roy, equips the Hand-Axe and runs exactly 4 tiles to the west.

[Image: Ke1kcc9.png] [Image: pjK4cHe.png]

Marcus drew in more units. He missed a counter on the cavalier, but that's fine.
The reason why he didn't move further was so that Deick and Lugh can kill the cavalier and the nomad.
Marcus can then run ahead and drop Roy.

[Image: 9qqwHjQ.png] [Image: x1G4dSU.png]

Just in time for Clarine to appear. She moves to Roy, talks to him, and joins our side.

Time for the obligatory cool trick of the map. We're equipping Marcus with a Hand-Axe and standing in range of the boss.
Not to attack it, but to draw an attack from it to us. When it's his turn to attack, he will switch to a Javelin to reach us.
Remember that part, it's critical.

Marcus and Roy killed one of the cavaliers. Clarine healed Roy to full.

Positioning is important not just for Marcus, but for the other two. Roy is the one they'll attack.
He draws both the cavalier and the archer out of the way. Clarine fills in the gap between Marcus and Roy, preventing the other archer from getting in the way.

Ta-da! We have free reign on the boss.

Eng101

A Javelin has a weight of 11. A Steel sword has a weight of 10.
Erik has a constitution stat of 9.
With a Javelin equipped, his speed is reduced by 2. With a Steel Sword, it's reduced by 1.
Marcus has an attack speed of 11.
Erik has an attack speed of 9.
4+ speed difference is needed for a double attack.
With a Javelin, Erik's speed is 7. With a Steel Sword, his speed is 8.
Which means that Marcus gets a double on him if he's wielding the Javelin, but not if he's wielding the Steel Sword.

Marcus doubles the boss with his Silver Lance to kill him hammer

Merlinus and Chad reached their respective villages just in time.
An undrafted unit bought us two Fire tomes and a Heal staff.

[Image: 49mlvZd.png] [Image: kMvItFr.png]

We seize the castle in only 5 turns!
Rutger never appeared for me, so I reckon at least Katon will have to take longer on this map.

@Jowy, can you give your running total for comparison?

And meanwhile I'm still re-trying Chapter 3 . . . which is, admittedly, a nasty map to get through with Lance as the usable cavalier, since he starts four squares further away from the fortress door than Alan and that makes it hard to get him leading the way for Marcus. But I've also just not been having much video gaming time recently. I think I underestimated how much trickier reporting on every map with my current schedule would be, compared to reporting every third map over the summer. I'm willing to keep chipping away at the race, but I feel like I should apologize because I'm not sure that my being the slowest player out-of-game is going to go away soon..

We started with a few too many chapters at once. Our normal pace should be about one chapter a week when they're normal length. So don't feel like you have to rush.

Chapter 1 side by side (spoiler for all players)

Thought it would be useful to compare side by side each persons progress across the chapters. Looking at characters used, time to complete and optional side quests done (i.e. visiting villages)
