RBP3 [SPOILERS] Hannibal of Byzantium (Bobchillingworth, ManiaMuse & SleepingMoogle)

Everything south of the rice is theirs, yes. They are poised to take everything two tiles above it

Which is half our available FP. Hell, even if they settle where I'm begging them to, it's still threatening to take 3-5 fp from us.

I know we've discussed the whole "do we stick with CUDDLE" issue before, I guess I really just don't give a shit now. Our "friends" are a bunch of shiftless layabouts and our alliance chronically lacks for any sort of leadership or direction. Only Ottos, HRE, and India seem to be putting any time into it, and we have a secret alliance with India anyway (although depending on what that settler does, I might have to take a very close look at our treaties...).

If we join PAT, there's no reason why we have to fight any of our old allies, we don't even border most of them anyway, whereas we're destined (well, more like "committed") for war with Krill if we stick with CUDDLE. And I'm starting to make a 180 and back away from my previous brinksmanship mindset. If we join PAT we get better techers and warmongers for friends, and Maya and Babylon can watch our backs for trouble. Kyan has offered before to help work with us to undermine PAT from within after we've secured ourselves militarily and technologically. Which leads to another concern- I'm worried that we're growing apart from our closest allies, as they spend all their diplomatic time talking to our "enemies" instead of us.

I suppose if we jump ship (assuming PAT will even take us, although I'm sure they will) that we might annoy some allies and Krill won't trust us or whatever, but again I ask whether we even give a damn. CUDDLE was always an alliance of convenience (plus at a minimum Inca has tried to sell us out already), and why would we ever care if England or Carthage trusts us? They're all a pack of opportunists anyway, and we'd certainly intend to betray them before the game is over if we wanted a chance to survive.

Basically, I'm in favor of at least sending out confidential feelers to PAT via Maya and/or Babylon, to see if they might take us. If India withdraws their settler, then joining PAT loses some of its urgency, but I think we should still strongly consider it, and sooner rather than later. If India settles in an unacceptable location, then I would urge us in the strongest possible terms to make an offer to PAT immediately.

Right now sticking with CUDDLE looks to be at best throwing away our fortunes in this game on the whims of bored & untrustworthy allies, and death by entropy (assisted by rifles) a likely worst-case scenario. Of course this post is being written as a rant somewhat addled by recent developments with India, but this is something we've been talking about for a while now- and we need to decide before PAT gets far enough ahead that we don't really have anything to offer them anymore.

Regarding India's settler, here's a confusing, poorly edited paint image for reference:

Red line is the land division border; technically they can settle anywhere south of it, but the settling arrangement specifies that "resources" above the line should not be claimed. Extrapolating from that, it seems fair to me that territory above the line should be considered "ours"- India seems to be following the letter but not the spirit of the settling rules, and while that make make sense vs. a neutral or hostile party, it's very troubling that they would attempt a land grab vs. their own allies.

Orange area represents the tiles I feel we have a right to. All of them are closer to our capital then theirs, I believe.

Green area are fp which they are entitled to.

Blue dot is where they could settle; purple is my preferred spot for them. Actually, one south of purple would be even better, but that's probably pushing it.

Ugh.. I need a few days away from this, so please do what feels best. With the recent week-long pause to haggle about technicalities and the current RB2 drama, my interest in this game (which admittedly hasn't been that great for the last month) has all but evaporated. I need to recharge my batteries, so to speak. smile

Heh, I was actually going to try to go on hiatus myself for this game, for the same reasons.

Chatted with Darrell again, sounds like his team has chronic miss-communication or some such bull shit. He says they'll settle on purple dot. If they don't, maybe I'll raze the damn city, I don't even care anymore.

Interestingly, both Krill and Darrell have voiced the same complaints to me in chat as just about everyone else in this game about how it just isn't fun anymore. Maybe we should track down whoever _is_ enjoying the game, kill them, and then all resign in mutual misery.

The difficulties can probably be summed up as 'this game is too big'. If RBP4 were to be organized someday, there should be a hard limit on Civs. 6-10 seems to work out at least (and the more Civs are playing, the more I would argue against tech trading). But 15+ in one game? Ugh..

There's a proposal to extend the timer to 36-48 hours in the Rules discussion thread that looks to have some support behind it. Do you have any preferences on this Bob? I'll be online tonight if you want to talk it over, but given the complete mess the last few turns have been, I'm not really opposed to extending it.

48 hours is pretty dramatic, but I don't have strong feelings about it. If we aren't going to change our war declaration rules, and it doesn't seem that we are, then allowing everyone enough time to deal with the stupid fractionalization of playing slots is only fair.

Actually posting here again...

Moogle, if read this before the turn rolls over, can you log in & gift Ottos whatever they're asking for? If you can't then not a big deal. Apparently their funding from Inca never came in.

I won't have Civ access for another 6-7 hours or so. alright

So to sum up this week in PB3:

The game was paused for almost five days because of the 4-person Indian team, only Sunrise could or knew how to move their military. After waiting a day for Soooo to log on to move the units as requested by Darrell (who for some reason isn't just doing it himself), Soooo does sign in, but he doesn't move the units that the game was paused for in the first place, because I guess he never reads his own thread or email.
