I think settling would have been better in the long run. Once currency is in, Alphabet is nigh useless.
Fine, there's retrospective tech visibility, and spies, but whatevs.

spies are underrated - I'm surprised no one has any out, particularly sunrise. He could know whether pindicator is about to attack him, as opposed to just wondering about it.

I suspect they all will, once they get around to researching alphabet. as far as I know, mali and now the native americans are the only ones that have alphabet.

I'm surprised at the talk about NAP's. To me, the major consequence of breaking a NAP is that no one would trust you to have one the next game. There are players who have a rep for breaking agreements not enforced by the game and that rep will hurt them in future games with diplo.

The idea was to state in the rules that deals are meant to be nonbinding so that players can break them without hurting their reputation. This in turn would make NAP-fests an impossibility.
I have to run.

Why does it seem that the players can't quite get their heads around this? Plako was very straightforward in the setup: Deceive or be deceived, but don't get upset if the gentleman's agreement is not kept.

well, I think the other idea is that this game is meant for deception and you shouldn't take a betrayal in this game to mean that a person can't be trusted in another game.

It is entirely possible that Sunrise is simply playing obtuse regarding the game rules in order the lull his neighbors into complacency.

I personally like Davy's response. Perfect.
