I settled for first ring fish and whipped the workboat.

Good luck with the comeback! I guess it's a bit early, but do have any impressions what are the biggest differences between RB and Civforum games? Deity and imbalanced maps make me think that the approach is maybe a bit more casual (compared to bigger RB Pitboss games)?

Thanks! It does seem to be more casual there, less focused on balance and equality and winning chances (although this map seems to have attempted balance, but in a different way that we typically do here). Personally I enjoy the strategy and decision making more than the actual winning so I like the fresh take. I'm having just as much fun trying to win a duel from the back foot against Mr. X as I would have trying to compete for the win ... more actually considering I really don't want to pilot a mega-empire in the late game Ultimate win for me is to eliminate Mr. X If I can achieve that I will consider that as having won a victory condition.
We're putting some pressure on Mr. X right now:
I thought I took a screenshot after this but I don't see it and Mr. X has already played so I'll have to wait until after the turn roll. I landed the archer on the forest and revealed another German axe 1NW of city center. Next turn I move the galley 2N and then have to decide what to do with the archer. I think based on culture borders that the German copper city is 3N of München. I could move the archer 1N to get a 5% shot if a freshly whipped single axe is defending a flatland city. Or I can load the archer to maintain a fork on the cities.
I have research visibility now and I noticed that Mr. X halted Writing about 40 beakers short and has been saving gold for a few turns ... is he changing target to MC?
And lastly for this report I present another map complaint:
Why do I have 3 furs, but Mr. X gets a silver and gems

Mr. X continued to advance with the axe that was under the T68 sign, and will likely follow up with the 2nd axe that is 2 turns behind. I will have a welcoming committee consisting of 2 chariots
I could have loaded the archer this turn to maintain the fork, but I wanted to ensure that Mr. X whips an axe, not a spear (which would be adequate to defend vs. amphibious archer, and from his perspective would be insurance against chariots. I also want to encourage advancement with his 2nd axe to the point where it is too far to retreat back to the city and I can catch it exposed in the open with my chariots.

My best laid plans have been foiled by a forest that grew on the tile where I was planning to strike the axe with my chariot not sure yet how I’ll adapt yet.

I lost both of my galleys on defense at 66% odds to win, one of the losses was flawless He had 4 galleys so the blockade was over anyway, but I was at least hoping that the odds would play out and I'd trade 2:2. I'm still putting pressure on with my three chariots and landed archer so hopefully I can force another whip or two in the short term. I'll have Triremes unlocked in about 9-10 turns, included a couple more turns of saving gold.

We land a mortal blow! Germany's death may be slow, and it may be slower than ours, but they shall not prevail to victory!
I opened the turn to another flawless loss against an axe (only 37% odds of victory, but still disappointing ). But what's this I see?!
A single spear defending the German city? Our galley blockade + archer diversion worked! Vodka predicted 48% odds of victory. After the first two chariots attack the last chariot is showing 45% odds ... but the RNG swung back in my favor and repaid the poor rolls from the last 2 turns!
32 capture gold means we can pretty much full burn through Metal Casting when combined with expenses dropping to -12 after razing and after deleting the chariot we're now showing 6 turns to MC with enough gold in the treasury. I'll probably have to whip another galley to hold the coast against Mr. X's galley swarm so bpt will drop slightly but I still think I'll be able to squeeze it out in 6. At worst we run a turn of breakeven and finish it in 7 turns. I offered peace but I doubt he would accept. If by some chance he did I would be able to whip out a settler and settle on copper so I highly highly doubt he would give me the opportunity, instead opting to remain at war until someone comes along to eat us both.

I'm a little puzzled by Mr. X's lack of defense here. He's played everything tactically well so far and had plenty of time to get emergency hammers into a 2nd spear after I revealed my 3 chariots to him 3 turns ago (or even an axe). He plays later in turn so has the option to whip each turn in response to my movements. Maybe he was just dumping hammers into galleys and omitted preparations for the chariots.
He also could have let my archer live for a turn, garrisoned Hamburg with the axe that was on the hill 1NW of Munchen, and then galley-chained the axe that killed my archer down into Munchen (see my T77 screenshot, plenty of galleys around for that maneuver). Any additional unit could have prevented my victory there.
For my part I need to be prepared for his lead galley to be loaded with 2 galley-chained full-health axes. As much as it will hurt whipping out another galley when I'm this close to Triremes I definitely need to bite the bullet next turn and do that to ensure that I can block off his galley. I'm going to split my two remaining chariots between the island and mainland so that I have one in each location. Then between that and archers and the warrior I'll have enough defenders to cover everything from amphibious attack, and pick off the axes if they are able to establish a landing.

Mr. X re-offered peace!!! Which means we get to settle copper (unless one of the other nations on that continent beat us to the spot The tradeoff is that whipping the settler will essentially cost us 2 triremes meaning we probably can't immediately blockade again once peace expires. But our position right now compared to Mr. X is actually stronger. I killed a worker of theirs so I'm up a worker, I pillaged their fish at copper city while ours still has a workboat ready to get reactivated once the city is settled. I currently have 2 more pop (although they are both angry due to the whip). I have two granaries, they only 1 in their capital. I'm 5 turns from MC, they have writing and if their research is comparable to mine 15 turns of research required once they turn on tech. So we can definitely have Triremes on the water to defend ourselves in the short term. Therefore we have an ever-so-slight chance of outpacing Germany enough to achieve an elimination in our duel. Here's a quick look at our lands, the copper city timing, and then on overview shot of Germany.
Copper city will be settled T85. I have a worker + archer pair on that galley which will get dropped off T81, and start chopping the northern forest first since that times with founding of the city. I think I'll chop an archer first since I can guarantee that completes before Mr. X can declare again (actually I could chop 2 archers before). But I'll remain flexible and if Mr. X keeps retreating his axe/spear pair then I'll dump the chops into something else. Maybe even a granary since I can have hammers in an axe and/or archer for emergency whip. Actually granary sounds best with the first chop, then I'll have enough hammers available to either chop an archer with the 2nd forest if needed. But again I'll keep an eye on Mr. X's units including his galley and react accordingly.
