A game of vanilla civ is pretty straightfoward at the moment. The route to beating the AI is pretty much mapped out. Making it harder by upping the difficulty isn't so much fun, either, because it just requires more attention to detail, but following the same general rules.

Let's face it...RB IS competitive. Very politely competitive, but still competitive. After all, if you take time to come up with some off the wall strategy, you want to know if it was effective or not. And in Vanilla civ, off the wall strats will almost always put you behind.

Breaking the "rules of effectiveness" (slavery is effective, CS is effective) in a vanilla game (i.e. minimal variants) isn't really rewarded, since it generally results in a suboptimal finish.

In other words, we all yearn to be innovative, but we yearn just as much to see the results of our innovation. To compare the effectiveness of our strategies. In the absence of other, variant, victory conditions, fastest finish WILL ultimately be the (boring) default.

Vanilla Civ4 has been played out. We need cool variant rules to keep things alive. We might be running out of those too. We are bound to run out of those someday. Sooo your quote may mean many things.

Playing Vanilla Civ4 here fails almost everyone who knows what they are doing.
Strong Timmys and Johhnys are not very competive. However, Johhny has nothing to do because we know the strongest ideas. Timmy has nothing new to experience or do. This leaves Spike. Spikes who prove that their better by making new better ideas have nothing to do because we know the strongest ideas. This leaves Spikes who just want the highest scorce. They are playing at the GOTM because they don't want to be ranting at for using the most overpowered ideas.
In order to solve this problem we need to have cool variant ideas so people who know what they are doing have something to do. No one showed up for this game because people who know what they are doing would be bored--and for people who do not this game was far too hard for them.

What's the name for a player who has no idea what he is doing, still having fun and cannot wait to get started on another RB event?

EDIT: What a useless post. So I top it up with the info that I will have even less time to play in 6 months, having reached a certain age now and taking over serious responsibilities now, y'know ... :2dance:

I have no idea wat Wotc is but was the purpose of that post about timmes and johnnies.......(I think the sentence could have been phrased a bit better if you weren't trying to hurt their feelings) and maybe this should be moved to a new convo since this has nothing to do with warlords two our first no show (A lot of post though)

My post was not an attack on Sulla. I think Sulla quit Civ4 not because he was a bad player. He is a very good player. In fact his is likely to be in the top 10 in objective playing stregnth. I did not mean to offend you in any way with my past post, but I think anyone would be defensive if someone appeared out of the blue and started talking negatively about them. Your assumptions are completely wrong, by the way. I still enjoy Civ4 quite a bit; I have at least three different succession game variants that I'm still waiting to try. I've played some short private games I didn't write about on my website (no, I don't record EVERYTHING there). Please don't assume that I have "quit" Civ4, or that I "can not do this" [having fun] anymore. I wouldn't presume to speak for anyone else here, much less someone I don't even know.

And generally speaking, it's not a good idea to use terminology that others don't understand to make your point. It would be stupid of me to throw around terms from the DDR games, for example, (PA, SDG, PSMO, black-flagging, etc.) that people in this forum won't get. If you are courteous to others and explain your points, you will get a much better response here.

To the original topic, I just found you guys a few days ago. I wish I'd known about you sooner cause I'm more the level that the easy ones would be aimed for and I'd definitely have tried this round. I hope to contribute next time an easy one comes up but I do realize that the average level of player here is WAY better than I am so I don't expect baby-games to come up very often.

Having never done this I can't say what I would/would not PLAY but I have noticed that the ones I like to read the most are the ones which have some wacky rule that forces play different then normal (lol although since I'm learning from these I may end up a REALLY odd player!).

This seems like a really neat place with great people and I've loved reading through some of the reports. Thanks for all the laughs and for helping me to improve my game.

This thread has gone in an unusual direction for Realms Beyond, so pay no attention it. RB is more like Soooo's post #61-friends, fun, and challenge.

If the "typical" RB game seems a bit over your head you should try some RB Succession Games http://www.realmsbeyond.net/civ/civ4-succession.html that is place where the Civ4 ones are listed. In SG games people will provide guidance and help and its fun ! Or you could play some Multiplayer games with some RB folks- here is the MP thread http://realmsbeyond.net/forums/showthrea...#post19993 I just posted in it and MP is a good way to improve your play quickly. So if you want to play tomorrow I will be there, just post a time in the MP thread.
