[SPOILERS] JR4 tries his luck in PB 37

(August 16th, 2017, 06:23)JR4 Wrote: The Pyramids were completed this turn by... Gavagai!

Thank goodness! It was getting late enough that I was really worried GJ was going to land it. Gav is of course also dangerous, but better him than GermanJoey.

Quote:Joey built a fifth(!) unit in State of Zijin (a spear). Okay, we`re not getting through that.

We were never getting through State of Zijin's defenses without committing our empire to it in any case. We can still commit our empire to it, and we can probably still raze this city, even in the reasonably short term if GJ doesn't have Construction yet (and doesn't get it soon). If this is what you want, I'll try to describe a couple of possible plans.

Quote:EDIT: Yuri got a Great Prophet as well. Maybe he`s going for a religion.

Russia has Stonehenge, which is the source of all his Great Priest points. My guess is he'll use (or save) the Prophet for a Golden Age. More when I've had time to look at the rest....

It looks like we didn't whip Nambui's temple T102, right? But we did on T103? (Either way should work; I'm just not 100% sure of which one actually happened.)

I'd suggest working a priest in Muqa and letting Chubei take another shared tile. It'll take a while to generate our prophet, but I think Muqa can spare the food to at least keep the process going. (Unless we're aiming to take out State of Zijin ASAP, in which case we probably can't spare anything.)

I did the suggested changes in Muqa/Chubei. Working a priest is surely a good idea. Nambui was whipped this turn and the temple will complete eot.

If you can make a plan for getting rid of State of Zijin, I`m more than happy to consider it. What kind of sacrifices do we need to make in order to have a chance?

It`s getting late so I`m going to sleep now. Have a nice day!

I haven't put together a detailed production plan, but that is something we'd need to do. In broad strokes though: Quietly build swordsmen (and probably some archers in production-poor cities to free up axes to move toward the front) while teching Construction. In critical cities near the front, set things up to be able to make at least 11hpt, line up a Swordsman to almost complete the turn before Construction completes, then whip the Sword into a Cat in each of the relevant cities so they complete on consecutive turns. Some cities might need to produce e.g. Sword-Cat-Cat on consecutive turns with the help of a chop (e.g. Borte's last forest) or the like if GJ realizes something is up too soon, so we'd have to be ready for that too. Basically, we'd have to tie up all our cities and our research on preparation, and if at all possible get a galley or two into position to threaten Seven Mysteries at the same time. And it still might not work if GJ gets Construction or HBR too soon. You can never guarantee anything against a smart human opponent, which is the reason that as far as possible we'd want to attack by surprise. (We wouldn't be able to hide all of our build-up, but we might be able to hide most of it....) There are also two forts we'd want to build if possible to expedite troop movement to the front by ship (for ships that can't make it to the Seven Mysteries region in time) - which is extremely worker-labor intensive. Also one of the forts would be on Borte's horse tile, I believe, though we'd obviously wait until the last minute to complete that and be ready to turn it back into a pasture as soon as we reasonably could.

There's an argument for getting HBR before Construction too, since Keshiks could move from the back-lines to the front faster than swords, and do some forking maneuvers, but I'm not convinced this is best, especially if GJ thinks our early build-up consists of Keshiks and he builds more spears in response.

There are a lot more complexities than that though. War against a highly-skilled human opponent is rough - and exciting! It would probably put us significantly behind relative to the other game leaders, and might be pretty much just making it Krill's game to lose (by making it harder for GJ to contest China with him) so I don't know if it's actually in any sense the right move even if we succeed. But it's out there!

(If we aren't planning an early attack, Nambui should probably start a library, by the way. The sooner we pop third-ring borders, the sooner we can start making headway toward reclaiming Nambui's second ring. It basically can't happen soon enough.)

Now we`re talking! I`m tempted to go for such a plan. We`ll have to sacrifice a lot of development to make it happen but if we just can get rid of State of Zijin our defenses would look much better. I`m still unsure if we`ll make a breakthrough as Joey`s probably going to tech Construction himself soon to finally break China`s capital (and for defense/attack on our front).

Of course there`s an argument for continuing the settler spam. We`re doing very well in the demos now and if we just keep on pushing on the western sea, that will give us a lot of new cities.

Actually, the decision of whether to move on Joey should be taken asap as we don`t really have any time to lose if we`re attempting an attack. It`s a tricky one.

Okay, so after all of that, I actually looked at civstats, and ...

...what?

According to civstats, GermanJoey's score dropped by ... 43 points ... in the middle of his turn 103 with nobody else logged in. Now, it's true he is Charismatic, but I'm still pretty sure he didn't have any cities big enough to do a 17-pop whip so ... uh ...

... I don't know. Maybe I'm missing something because it's 5 AM and I ought to be asleep, or maybe Civstats just went crazy, orrr ... I don't know. I can't figure out anything that would make that happen. Maybe if the game was paused and he whipped seventeen pop from all around his empire, and the score drop all hit at once when he unpaused? (If so, that's terrifying; it could represent a huge amount of military that wouldn't show up on the graphs until next turn....) I don't know.

The demoscreen might tell us something? And a big overview shot of his cities? Or ... maybe someone knows of a way that could happen that I don't? I don't know.

I'll look forward to seeing what the game has brought when I'm up again; regardless, have a great day!

You`re right. That`s a huge decrease. Well, the power graph doesn`t show any build up.. yet. I`m unsure of what`s happened here. If it somehow represents a lot of whips we need to take measures, building more units in Oghul Qaimish and Nambui. Maybe I should log back in to change the builds. I`ll have to think about it. As it is, Oghul Qaimish is finishing the Temple this turn and is free to start a unit next turn. Nambui started a Barracks which is useful anyway.

The turn report will have to wait for a few hours.

TURN 104

We built our 13th city this turn, NW of Borte. We`re keeping up in expansion but as earlier mentioned, our expenses are starting to become a problem now. We`re making 200 beakers (-122gpt) at full speed. We got a good deal of overflow from Masonry, we`re currently teching Priesthood - Monotheism. Yes, I think it`s better to go for Horseback Riding instead of getting Construction asap. The risks involved by attacking State of Zijin are just too high now. It`s a shame to give up on a (possible) window like this, so the decision might come back to haunt us later. We`ll see!

I changed the build in Nambui to a Library. We have to get control of our copper tile. Borte started an Aqueduct. Yes, I`m hoping to land the Hanging Gardens there! It`s a 2+10 turns build. We have one chop that could help. There is an opportunity cost here. If someone else builds HG before we finish the Aqueduct it`s just a waste of hammers. Muqa started a Library. It`s a useful building but we`ve got a lot of other things to build as well. Chubei kept most of the shared tiles to 1 turn a settler. The settler on the galley made landfall on the pigs our E - no units of Dark Savant`s in sight.

A worker went to the forest W of Bulugan to chop down the forest there. It`s outside our borders but the hammers are free since we`re building a city there sometime. 2 workers are cutting down the jungle on the ivory. One worker is on the forest  copper of the new city, preparing to mine next turn. It could be joined by a second worker next turn.

I took a screenshot of Greece`s core. Can you make something out of it?
