[PB79] End of the beginning?

Turn 79 & 80



I passed by my galley around the eastern island, meeting xist10 in the process. He swung by a galley recently too. Founded my first island city Shem on T75 and another city in south, The Hook, couple turns later. Loaded up galley with another settler + archer, headed for the stone + pig island. I will swing around the northern side to see if I want found this city on PH or on stone hill.

Some random ramblings about what’s planned next: Three settlers will be whipped next turn, two of those will go for red and white. These will be closer for worker support. I completed mathematics 1 turn after Miro, and after gaining research visibility, changed espionage points towards Gira. I plan to save some forests around Stenn Desert, to possibly chop a wonder (Looking at Mausoleum). Otherwise start chopping more workers, granaries and libraries etc. I would like to go calendar next, but someone has metal casting and I’m slightly worried about the naval control of my islands in near future. EDIT: Forgot to mention that Stenn Desert copper mine was pillaged again by barb axe, after I had tried to send the guarding Dog soldier to be loaded up for island garrison duty. Had to turn him back and wait for a new archer, which delayed sending the galley by a turn.

What was your reasoning for settling the island city on the location it is?

For Shem the reasons were:
1) Picks up all of the food resources and can share fish for faster growth + flexibility
2) Is on plains hill for the defense bonus and added production to city center tile

Do you think the Marble is another island, or mainland next to xist? Any interest making a grab for it, or are you still in position to grab the Western source?

I think it might be an island. But it's too close to xist10 for me to settle and defend effectively for now. There looks like to be uncontested islands in the south where I can expand to.

Turn 82



Did three triple whips of settlers and one double whip of a worker on T81. Founded Skinner’s Roam on pig/stone island, galley is heading back to pick more units. Next settle spots are red, white and pig/ivory island. Costs are climbing up, currency is looking a higher priority than earlier, still would like to get plantations going first. I just realized I have a grand total of five workers, but most of my core cities are whipping so frequently that there are only a few pops working unimproved tiles. New settles and fast regrowth necessitates more workers and workboats, those are slotted in production ques.

Quick overview:


I settled the closest spots to save on worker travel time and faster setup. Was first to 11 cities. Newest settler is going north for the deer + gem. Next turn whip a settler from Swamp, that will head to south eastern rice island. Capital library completes next turn and I have enough gold to burn through calendar or currency at 100% research. Miro just completed currency, so I would get KTB for that.

Gira built the Pyramids and oracle was built by xist10 some time ago. I proposed open borders to him which was initially rejected, but he resent this turn and I accepted. Demos:

Now I get KTB for currency from two players, very nice. I’m about to settle northern deer + gem spot and next turn galley will unload settler + archer to rice/horse island. I’m building more settlers too, as currency should prevent my economy from crashing.
