greenline gets rushed and eliminated on turn whatever: Huyana Capac of Mali

turn 50. 50 can be evenly divided by 50, so that means I am legally obligated to provide a detailed update with all of my cities and my future plans.

here's some overview shots of my land to begin with

the north:

the south:

Sian's empire is further to the south. Annoyingly he moved a warrior up to the cows by The Lagoon I want to improve, so I had to move my axe guarding the city to scare him away. I only built the axe to make my power graph look a bit nicer, so I'm glad I'm getting some use out of him anyway.

I also moved my scout over to the central area (southeast of The Vents) and lookie what I found

Apparently I should have been scouting this area much sooner duh . This makes my starting area look like PB31 in comparison. And look at that "hard to get" marble just hanging out there. More like "playing hard to get"...

here's what my cities are up to

I've been whipping my capital a whole lot so it's mostly been hovering around size 4. Now that Judiasm is my state religion and I'm about to hook up Ivory and Furs (more on that a bit later), I'm growing it up so it can steal all the cottages from Undercaves and be a nice megacity to hopefully fuel more expansion. It's also nicely chugging away at producing my great prophet, due turn whenever.

Undercaves has also been whipped a fair amount for workers and setllers while trading cottages with Home Bay. Now that it has expanded borders I've been whipping out work boats here and there, and I also finally have a worker available to hook up the copper. I plan to have this city work all the resources minus the deer and pump out more workers and settlers in the future.

The Vents is kind of the odd duck out here. It doesn't have many good tiles beyond its resources (where 'good' means riverside cottages) so there isn't much benefit to growing it. It's my only city right now that has any kind of production via the copper mine, so I'll alternate between military and worker whips here. Once I get Monarchy those grass wines will be pretty good tiles.

The Lagoon has lots of food and cottages to work, so right now I'm growing this city ASAP. If Sian keeps his warrior around I'll probably kill it. The diplo hit would be annoying but constantly needing a babysitter for my workers would be more annoying.

Ridge Water is my newest city founded this very turn. It's junk, but it gives two happy resources. Right now my workers are chopping out a work boat, and then they'll hook up the ivory, then the furs, then the deer. I think Jowy went for his equivalent of this city first (from what I've seen of Sian's land it''s pretty mirrored) since he grew his capital all the way to size 9. It reminds me of Krill's strategy in PB5, but I think it was more appropriate there then here because Krill's surrounding land was bad and he was also CHA in that game. Right now Jowy is still at three cities while me and Sian are at 5 and picklepickl is at 4.

one last thing: I signed OB with picklepickl and let his scout wander through my lands. I don't mind if he runs super C&D on my builds really. Since picklepickl was the only one to be courteous enough to run a scout right by my cities instead of a warrior I'm probably not going to attack him or bully him in return. Sian and Jowy on the other hand are prime targets for a knight rush if I ever get there.

So how much do you want that marble? And you orphaned your horse?!

Marble would be cool for MoM, but I have a feeling there will be stiff competition for it. Orphaning the horse bugged me, but I gained a fur and crab tile in return. Plus that city is much more important for luxury resources then actual tile yields anyway so losing one horse isn't the end of the world.

turn 58: the pace of the turns is slowing. we used to do 2 a day at pretty consistent times but now the save gets passed to me once a day at completely random hours. i'm guessing someone has finals week?

anyway let's get to the exciting stuff. namely WAR!!!11!

(As you can see I hit all the QTEs so I won without taking too much damage. I recommend using an Xbox 360 controller because it suffers from the least input lag.)

Sian left his warrior in range where I could road up to it with my workers and smack it with my axe so I did. He still had the nerve to be roaming right next to my city with that thing so I felt justified in doing so. Remember, this is a no barbs game, so the only reason to be scouting with a warrior is to harass other people with it, because scouts are otherwise superior in every way.

I offered Sian a cease fire so let's see if he's too bitter to take it.

Now for the sad news

Both Jowy and Picklepickl have currency so I'd imagine Jowy's GNP is also skyrocketing right now. I think I played this game all wrong. Maintenance costs are so high that you need to just ignore the monk part of the tree and go all economy. I revolted to HR and OR last turn but I doubt that will make much of a difference. Oh well. Live and learn I guess. Quick speed games are a whole different beast then normal speed ones.

At least I still have a minor lead in crop yield, but that won't mean much when the knights come knocking.

another turn that got passed to me super late. right now it isn't a problem for me but i'm going to be starting a summer job soon and then it might be difficult for me to play the turn at all these odd hours.

anyway new city time

now time for me to quibble about the map a bit. This may be a bit presumptuous since I haven't scouted Jowy's territory, but it feels like the gems on the central ring area of this map are closer to both Jowy and Sian then to me. I mean you can check the older pictures in the thread where the gems to the south of my capital are pretty far away but much closer to Sian, and now we have Jowy's 5th city grabbing one in the first ring and the other in the second, while my widely placed 5th city has to expand borders for one and can never work the other. It's not a huge deal in the end, and I do have the advantage in this border fight of having SH monuments and easily producible OR missionaries, but meh.

edit: oh yeah also Sian accepted peace dancing

new city

it's crap, but it provides a solid base for expanding further towards the center. I dub it whipping boy #2.

In other news:

I'm trying to get a scientist out of Undercaves after whipping a library there. That will go for a nice academy in my now grown up capital

Sian built the Colossus (obviously)

Confucianism (two guesses as to who founded that) randomly spread to Opean Ocean, which means my Jewish missionary headed there has a chance of just failing at his job. What a fun gameplay mechanic!

I've always thought there should be a bonus of spreading a state religion to make it almost impossible to loose the roll...

in "better late then never" news...

(my gnp still sucks though)

In the meantime, Sian feels the need to settle right up against my borders instead of going after picklepickl who has been sitting on five cities for ages.
