Like that:

No matter how much defense I've got piled into the city, I'd really prefer he not have ability to 1t it from the fog.

So we'll see if he's interested in a 10t treaty:

Deleted the Worker on the tile in question, but left him one that he can take in exchange if he feels hard done by. Also took the one that's been trapped in that border loop for quite a few turns.

Still no Police State. Iiam

For reference, here's the SE border, equally littered with signs:

This seems like a no-brainer:

But I'll just check to be sure:

Yep! nod

A quick reload and an Accept Deal later, I'm switching up some builds:

That's one Settler for the NW, one for the SE Filler, and a final one for a throw-away city in the NE:

Not much value in the terrain itself, but it would give me good visibility and an added Cultural buffer for Walking Boots. I'll probably just staff it with a Spear.

Tech path will be Compass-Optics for Carracks and then probably push through one route to get close to Gunpowder. If Ginger is beelining for Taj at this stage, then that's his business - and rather him than anyone else as he has the fewest cities....

Aha, here are Adrien's forces:

Looks like he's going to take advantage of our new OB and go and murderise Ginger. Maybe I should feel guilty ... or at least worried what he'll do with the land.  alright

But...

Promised Land! jive

I think I might ...

... have crashed my Economy ...

... again.

Doubt he'll take it, but we'll see:

Well I think that this might have been Adrien's plan all along:

Unfortunately it seems like there might only be space for one city out in the blue:

Planted my flag:

Of course I did realise a couple of turns ago that I can't get connections until Astronomy. frown

And Pickle is about to Liberalise Rifling... scared

Who's in driving seat from your perspective at the moment? If not you, how are you going to turn things around? You seem to have pretty good lead in score at least... due to most cities at least (by a quick look)?

I completely missed this question at the time - stupid not sending e-mails thing. shakehead

I think the game is pretty precariously balanced; Pickle has by far the best economy and is scorching ahead in Tech, Adrien has the whole "rampaging Cataphracts" going for him, with Representation propping up his Research, and I've got a huge number of cities and associated Pop points which I have recently been leveraging on virtually 100% Wealth builds to try to (somewhat) keep up in tech. Kicked off my 3-person (MoM) GA, am racing pickle for the Taj, and am just about to revolt into Representation myself (& kill off scores of unhappy population with the whip and/or Draft).

Oh, and I declared war on Pickle this turn.  yikes scared yikes scared

OK, so he has access to Rifles & Cavs and my defenses are mostly Piles o' Pikes and the odd Musket, but I had some strategically placed Carracks and he (finally) researched Optics and would have spotted them lurking just in range of his cities with the expanded visibility. Really, I had to do it now or he'd have just reinforced his coastal cities and kept on building a stack to wollop me with. bang

So yeah, I basically burnt his Northern coast. A size 12 (guarded by a Warrior) and a size 10 (Chariot). I've got a small force of Carracks in the Eastern sea that can threaten his capital and fork a second city - but it's mostly a bluff / attention grabber since only 4/8 cargo spaces are filled. I'm probably vulnerable in the West if he rolls a stack towards me straight away, but I'm pumping Muskets at full rate now (using the ill-gotten raze gains to support my economy) and the longer he takes to start moving the closer I'll be to my own Rifles.

I have pictures and will post them next time I'm home and the site isn't gone kablooey.

Tech situation as Pickle discovers Optics:

I've been watching for it for a while with a pair of Carracks lurking in range, but out of pre-Optics sight. Moving them in now, what will they find...

Part of me had been expecting (hoping?) to find freshly-produced Rifles occupying them, but given how far he's outstripping the rest of us technologically, I don't think I can pass up this opportunity to take out 2 of his 10 cities. The saving grace is that he has not had MilTrad for more than a couple of turns and Rifling for not much longer, so his modern force can't be that large, right? scared

It's worth noting that there is only a single Mace in each of these, because the "lurking" rather happened at random rather than being planned out beforehand.

A quick look at our borders before the attack:

In my East (his West), I have good Cultural control and a pinch point that can be reinforced quickly from my core. The Northern city is crumple zone, but has good warning from the Mountain vision. The West (his East) is more exposed, with Kitten Heels in 2-mover range, and here is where the majority of my defenses are focused. Trainers is also a bit of a throw-away, but if it fell he would have access to my core and so a decent defense needs to be maintained.

Well, here goes nothing:

Promoted the Mace CRI here to take the odds from the 70s to the 90s to score the kill.

No promo needed before hitting the Warrior though:

Pretty good raft of infrastructure survives (momentarily), but you can also see from these shots how Cottage-specced his territory is. That plus ORG and relatively few cities has allowed his crazy tech rate.

Well on to turn 107:

He's killed the Western Mace, but didn't have anything in range to hit the Eastern. That hops back on the Carrack and heads South, while the other Carrack takes a look at his remaining Northern port city. Not going to bluff my way into that with one Carrack!

All quiet on the borders:

Still, I'm packing Kitten Heels and trundling the Cats over from their previous spot overlooking the Adrien border.

Taking a look at the Capital:

The viewing Carracks couldn't have reached either city this turn, however I should have placed the one outside Scottish Fold one tile North to bluff the ability to hit his Cap - I was seduced by the opportunity to squat on his Seafood and didn't consider the option. Doh

Anyway, with only 4 units available, hitting the Rifle & Knight is just too low odds to go for - even with a GEng as a potential added victim. I'll continue to lurk here though to force him to maintain a reasonable garrison.

And Balls! Writing this it's just dawned on me that that GEng is going to steal the Taj from me. frown After this turn, it'll take me 3 non-Golden Age turns to complete the build. Pickle started his build 2-3 turns before me but I've had 2-3 more Golden Age turns into the build. I reckon he should be in range to rush it this turn, unless he's close to finishing and thinks I'm further away. Hmmm, if it's not fallen by the time the turn gets back to me, I think I might have to HAK it to completion...

An update is long overdue, because it's been Wow 25turns since I last posted! Unfortunately for you Lurkers, I've not had as much time recently and have chosen to spend it playing other games rather than reporting on this one. So we'll start with a couple of paragraphs of "what happened in the last 25turns" from a Dreylin perspective - I see Adrien posting regularly, so some of this won't be a surprise.

So where was I, oh yes, razing Pickle's cities with Carracks. Well not long after my last update, and not seeing an opportunity to make much progress against Pickle, I decided to offer him a Peace treaty. Might have been a mistake, but regardless he accepted it. And he finished the Taj on the same turn - without using the GE, so I couldn't have beaten him anyway. He ran that into a double GA and pulled even further ahead in tech grabbing Astronomy, Communism and Democracy and starting to head towards Assembly Line. He also took advantage of the enforced peace to take a couple of bites out of Adrien; he sniped a GE border city and used some Galleons to invade across the straight and take a pair of coastal cities. The war was concluded not long before I could have jumped in with Adrien countering to reclaim one city leaving Pickle with a decent city from GE and a culturally swamped city on Adrien's mainland. Meanwhile Adrien continued his slow but inexorable consumption of GE.

Sad to miss out on the Taj, I did spawn a low-odds Spy to allow me a 4-person GA and with the comfort of enforced peace I went all Wealth and tried to catch up a bit in tech. Seeing pickle target Democracy, I decided to skip trying for the Statue and concentrate on the middle - Astro, Chem and SciMeth - culminating in using overflow and a GSci to 1t Physics before anyone saw it coming. Having played with Airships in PB33, I knew that being the first there was a strong position to be in.

After securing Peace with Adrien, Pickle sent his fleet of a half-dozen Galleons out to wander the seas between us. Even though I thought they were likely empty, I didn't take any chances and a lot of troop shuffling ensued as our Peace expired. At this point though Pickle took his eye off the ball and kept them hanging around while I completed Chem and upgraded and built Frigates. A couple of turns later I declared again and sunk his fleet.  hammer I have been undisputed master of the seas since then, although now he's starting to put out a few Ironclads. They can be taken out with an Airship strike and a pair of wooden ships though, so they have been advancing cautiously.

Recent turns tech-wise have been a 3-way race towards Oil navies; Adrien reached Railroad first, but has had to detour back to SciMeth to reveal Oil. Pickle followed and is saving Gold on Combustion. I am a bit behind, but full KTB is a consolation.

The game is interestingly poised; Adrien & I have somewhat similar empires - large & sprawling and relying on Rep Specialists to push tech - and Pickle's is the opposite - small & tall, teching with UniSuff, FS cottages and keeping costs down & hammers up with State Property. Pickle is well ahead in beakers researched, while Adrien and I have been more targeted in our routes (neither of us has Education yet). The next few turns could be decisive...
