[Spoilers] Harry Hydra Tours his Hit Charitable Thoughts

Turn 59

The galley finds some food! I think it should check out the water around the marble then head back to pick up the settler from BB. Our warrior dithered about heading back to investigate the marble, but ended up moving forward toward Krill to figure out his plans. New version of the world map for dotmapping:

If you want to play along at home with the dotmapping game don't click this spoiler:

In the north Krill has expanded quickly to his SW with two cities that we can see, he settled his fifth city last turn, presumably he's gone towards the corn SE of his capital. I also presume that he'll settle the brown city at some point fairly soon.

If we were to settle the brown site then that'd probably put us on a permanent war footing. I expect that that isn't what the team wants... We do need to go for yellow pretty soon (on a hill - unfortunately meaning we orphan a dye tile until we can afford a filler city on the white X) as that sets up a pretty equitable border, unfortunately it's pretty rubbish until Calendar and Iron Working, but a fort on the white square makes a nice canal.

Orange could be on a hill to share corn or on the flat plains tile (orange cross) to be a canal. I'd go for the former - we can always put a fort on the plains tile or a desert tile (white square). That also allows filler cities on the grass jungle hill and desert eventually. Needs a missionary

Green could be on the marble or between corn and marble. It depends on seafood.

Closer to home red suddenly has to be on the sugar for the fish, meaning we don't need Iron Working for the happy. The white filler city could be on the copper, but that seems a waste. Pale blue doesn't really have a choice about where it goes.

Overseas to the south dark blue depends on what we reveal in the fog. Not a high priority just yet. There are a couple of possibilities for cities shown with white X's, depending on scouting.

Purple is a bit of a stretch at this point, but it'd be pretty sweet. I wonder if it's in our sphere of influence? We should send a couple of units over to stake out some land.

Turn 60

Our work boat found a cul-de-sac. I think there might be a route through to the north. There's so much land here that it must belong to someone, right?

We find Donovan (FIN/CRE/Arabia) but we didn't make contact. With The Oracle he might have MC and triremes, so no need to let him know we exist just yet. If he builds the Colossus then we could load a bunch of axes onto boats and see if we can find it...

Turn 63

We have Judaism! What's the most religions anyone has got in a multiplayer game? We converted to Organised Religion straight away for bonus hammers into lighthouses and granaries. Unfortunately we need those bonus hammers and the happy that Hinduism is giving AG, BB and DttR, so we can't convert to Judaism for five turns to allow CS to pop borders.

Turn 64

Krill's warrior has been doing some more fog busting for us. smile

Bad news is that he's got horse hooked, and I'm pretty sure he'll have copper soon as well (at the moment the tile still says "requires route") since the highlighted tile used to have a forest on it. The city sign to the south also used to have a forest on it. It's possible that he just chopped it when borders popped.

Demos. Krill has Hunting and Animal Husbandry, but not Writing, MC or Iron Working. He got a 17 point jump recently, which I was worried would be a classical tech - HBR being the panic-inducing option, but it could just be land from his third city settled on t43. We'll know more in 4-5 turns when we get AH ourselves and can check on known-tech-bonus.

In PB 37 we founded 6 out of the 7 religions. Krill took Hinduism early and no one else seemed to care about religion in that game. While it`s certainly possible to beat that, the Eternal Empress Isabella of Mongolia wouldn`t be happy about it. nono

Turn 67

I doubt we'll top that JR4. frown

A quiet few turns where Krill really started to leverage his nice land to good effect - he's up to seven cities now, Cairo (IMP/ORG) and us are the closest competitors on five each. Our next settler has been on the way to the next city site for three turns now, but our snakey land means it'll be t69 before we settle our next city. At this point new cities are starting to cause a bit of a hit to the economy (we should settle our seventh and eighth by t80, when I expect the break-even research rate to be 20-30%) so we started on the Great Lighthouse, eta eot75 with a 2-pop whip.

Our workboat seems to have found a route to the east and next turn we'll start scouting to the west. I'll figure out the circumnavigation eta at some point. dancing Note from the scores - we have a trade route with Donovan and Lewwyn adopted Buddhism, which I think means he's neighbours with Donovan, so also nearby.

Demos and power. Krill got a big power increase a couple of turns ago. I think it's likely that it was Horseback Riding, which is a worry. We'll know in 3-4 turns when we complete AH and check known tech bonus.

One thing that we discussed before the game was how the changes to Privateers (requires Paper and Optics) and Caravels (str 4) meant that Astro wasn't as important as you might imagine on a watery map. In fact the location of the Privateer on the tech tree makes a Liberalism run attractive (even though I've never got near landing Lib in any MP game I've played). However the Astro-bulb may still be handy on a map like this if we want to mount an invasion and is still available to us so long as we research the right techs:

Can't get:
Civil Service, Meditation

Must have:
Writing, Maths, Alphabet, Compass, Optics.

It all depends what the geography of the neighbourhood is like. At the moment I'm keen to build 2-3 galleys and a bunch of axes/chariots/HA/swords and go relieve Donovan of his land, but we need to get our border with Krill sorted out first. In fact if we did it right Krill wouldn't know we were at war with Donovan until we'd taken cities, by which time he'd lack time to respond... Oh, that is tempting. Even just burning the Buddhist shrine might be nice for us long-term if we can mop up the other religions...

Turn 68

Superdeath beats us to the Great Lighthouse by 7 turns. At least we get some failgold for it. DttR switches to a missionary for the city we'll settle next turn. Then we'll have a settler if the island to the SE is nice.

Free at Last is a traditional Negro Spiritual, quoted by Dr Martin Luther King in his "I have dream" speech in 1963. This acapella version gets good when the harmony kicks in.

The city itself (settled last turn) should be a commerce powerhouse with sugar, dye and five cottages. It'll have a fort E of the city centre as a canal and hopefully presents a solid frontier against Krill. The Hindu missionary for this city was whipped this turn, but a border pop isn't vital here so he could head up to the NW city (due to settle t73) to pop borders onto the corn quickly. I'd like to get a scout out to the NE to see if Krill is settling towards us. Perhaps the warrior from F could go?

In the east this looks like a decent city site, we'll need to get another work boat over here to check for seafood before settling it though. Somehow Judaism has already spread to Mr Cairo and he's taken a turn of anarchy to use it! Perhaps we should shrine the Jewish holy city instead of the Hindu one?

We're exploring to the west now as well. This island will support two more fairly crappy cities and one terrible city. Exit Music will start a settler for the fish when it hits size 2. Perhaps there'll be horses here next turn?

In the north our axe clears the way for the settler and worker who will make landfall next turn. I'd like to be able to move the axe back to this plains tile next turn, but if Krill's warrior moves to the jungle then he'll need to move SW to cover the settler and worker instead.

Demos and power. We're behind Krill on MFG and CY, but happy that he hasn't had any big power increases recently. I dunno who the leader on GNP is. I suspect the player with double the number of soldiers we have is Gavagai - he took a city from Elkad last turn.

The good news is that horses are in our borders and shouldn't take too long to hook. smile

The bad news is that the only other horses we've found in the whole world are both in Krill's borders. shakehead
The good news is that Mr Cairo (ORG/IMP/Aztec) is our south-eastern neighbour. mischief

The bad news is he's about to draw level on city count this turn. shakehead
The good news is that we'll pull back ahead again on t73. whip
The bad news is that Krill is near our borders and only needs to beat two warriors in 80% fights to burn Free At Last. eek

The good news is that he might not risk the fight with a chariot that looks to be set up as a sentry. please
The bad news is that it's Krill, so he probably will. scared
The good news is that if he takes 2 hits or more in the first fight we have odds in the second fight. hammer
The bad news is that you only win a 66% fight 2/3 of the time. coffee
The good news is that we'll have a spear in Free At Last on t74. smug
The bad news is that with good combat luck Krill can take the city t73. Rolldice
The good news is that he logged in just as I was finishing up and the chariot rolled away to the south east. jive

Demos and power. Using GNP I think Krill didn't get HBR - the power jump was probably two chariots. Should we switch EPs to Cairo, when we're about to get research visibility on Krill in fifteen turns?
