Are dikes still at Steam Power too?

No, I got my dikes at replaceable parts. Levees, however, are at Steam Power for those that get to use them.
So, for me, SP is only really good for the worker bonus and revealing coal.

Ugh, honestly I'm now at a bit of a loss as to what to do.
REM finished Assembly Line this turn.
I've increased my science output so that I'm now getting about a 4000 GNP/t, but REM has increased his as well and is sniffing at 5000gnp.
I'm in a golden age while he is not.
Although I wouldn't be surprised if he launched a GA any turn now. He just got access to factories and he's got 2GMs and 1GS sitting in his capital.

I believe the chance/risk of him attacking me just went down a few notches.
After playing after me for many a turn, this turn he decided to jump in ahead.
He also signed a defensive pact with Donovan.

How does this work?
I wouldn't be allowed to declare on Donovan for another 9t, but if I attacked REM, would DZ then insta-declare on me? or when our peace treaty expires? or not at all unless I waited the 9t?

It's a rather interesting move in that it probably doesn't work the way one would expect.

See, my first reaction is that this move is to prevent me from attacking DZ.
Only that it doesn't.
Sure, it starts a "war" between REM and me, but to what effect? I expect he might grab a few of my southern island cities if I don't reinforce, but after his last shenanigans I'd expect that anyhow if I don't watch my back well enough.
He might also take a poke at razing one/a couple of northern border cities, but on the other hand I believe those plans are since long in motion considering he's got 3 frigates and 3 galleons within striking distance.
Remains the thrashed trade routes. Well, actually I'm thinking of cancelling them myself. Sure, it'll hurt me, but I believe I might actually have better internal routes and so it'd hurt him more. Actually, come to think of it I might actually do that. It should be fairly obvious that REM's number one at the moment and if I'm lucky dtay and Gav might follow suite...

What if I attack REM then?
Well, now this pact actually plays a part. See, I expect DZ to honour it. I think it was in pb25 that DZ didn't feel like he could attack someone because they had gotten a fish-fish deal eons ago? Anyway, DZ might be slightly behind the top 4, but he can still produce better units than either dtay or Gav. And he's got this crazily good spot if he wants to spread my forces...

I believe if nothing is changed in this mod then your peace treaty with DZ gets instantly cancelled when you declare war on REM.

Thanks. After what I wrote earlier I'm trying to not let the dp affect my mindset on the possibility of attacking DZ, but sadly I have to admit that it does have a slight psychological aspect. I do see, however, that if I gain control of one tile we're in a cultural war over, then Darnassus could be captured with enough cavs in 1t, and that in turn would open a route to taking out the rest of DZs knights in the area. I'd definitely suffer some initial losses (his top defender is a CG3 redcoat and he's got +40% cultural defense...), but the quality of his troops tapers off reasonably quickly (unless he upgrades/moves in new troops) and I should be able to get odds after a short while.

Sadly DZ isn't the main problem though. REM is. This last turn he got Scientific Method. I had just decided that I would race him to physics, but then I noticed this. Later I also saw that my GP that I got this turn turned out not a GS, but a GSpy (most likely candidate was a GS at about 40%). If either one hadn't been true, we'd had a race, but now I don't believe it's worth it. Even just forcing REM to bulb with his own GS would've been worth something, but I don't believe I'd get close enough for that (though I could 1t SM myself at 100% if I so please).

Hmm.
Last turn I in the end decided to run 70% science on Monotheism. That way I could get Democracy this turn without revealing my intentions to anyone with research visibility beforehand.
Only...

Look at REM there. Last turn he mostly saved money and this turn he seems to be doing the same...
...
Ah, let's yolo this! Research set to Scientific Method (going on Physics) at 100% and wealth builds in IW-city and a few other places.
I believe I'm ahead of REM on the path to Physics and I actually think he'll have to bend his civ quite hard to even get a coin flip with regular research.
Of course REM also has mr. Arabyatha at his disposal and if he does bulb him he'd most likely beat me...
Still, I don't like the idea of giving up all first-to-bonuses without a fight and I might just lure him into thinking I'm one turn slower than I am...
At best he'll use his GS, but spend too little regular research and I'll win the GS (probably by a coin flip).
At worst he's had a bit more overflow than I've thought and wins the GS fair and square. Then he launches two consecutive GAs in order to have his Pentagon boosted factories roll out some units that I simply have no counter against...
Wish me luck wink

As I for once look fairly good in the demos I thought i'd show them as well.

Usual caveats apply. This is me in a GA at 100% science researching a two-arrow tech. REM otoh is saving money on a tech he's most likely first to. The demos still look nice though rolleye

Edit: just because I took screenshots last turn and bothered enough to paste them together I'll also attach the city builds list. Not that interesting perhaps, but it does give an idea of how big the empires are starting to get...

Well thank you GJ! smile

Another thing from last turn…
Donovan, you might want to read up on East Indiamen and defensive pacts.
When we made peace I had loaded up 3 knights on a boat and could either chain the units to my advanced EI up north or turn back south towards the islands.
I chose the latter.
Had I chosen the former…

Yeah, that’s the English coastal capital defended by a single warrior.
You can also spot the difference between English and Finno-dutch workers. While my guys and girls have trouble keeping up with improvements in serfdom, the English dudes are just enjoying the decadent lifestyle of the big city.

The eagle-eyed can also notice the sign pointing towards the cap, 1SW of where it actually is. Hurray for mis-reading cultural borders over 100t ago! smoke

So, Scientific Method is in. Do I have oil?
Yes I do.

Aluminum?
Yes.
Good, good, now just a quick check through the event log…
banghead
Another GS for REM. Well, I guess it was worth a shot…
Then I notice. I’ve got research visibility on REM! Hadn’t noticed that this would be even remotely possible as I’ve lately just been playing catch up to stop him from having too extensive city visibility on me. It shows Democracy 1t. Democracy. That’s not Physics. There’s still a small possibility that he could bulb his scientists and beat me to the new GS, but right now my chances don’t look half bad.

So why does REM go Democarcy?
Silly question, he wants the Statue of Liberty. REM and I have empires that look quite similar in terms of tile improvements, but his is even more specialist driven with Environmentalism and a free scientist with every university. He’s also got most cities on the same land mass so SoL will be downright scary. I might’ve made a huge mistake prioritizing Physics instead of SoL, but it is what it is…

Anyway, is there any chance of me beating REM to SoL now??
Let’s have a look.
I believe REM will try to build the statue here:

I count about 70 base hammers.
Add the visible factory (and forge) for +50%
Add Bronze for +50%
And while I don’t see a coal plant, let’s count on him having one next turn for another +50%
That’s 70h * 250% = 175hpt (if he has IW and I just don’t spot it, it’d be 245hpt)
1500h / 175hpt = 8,6turns. Let’s say he has a little bit of overflow and call it 8t or finish time t182 + 8t = t190 e.o.t.

Myself:
Let’s assume
Physics t183
Democracy t185
Steam Power t187 (hooking up coal on the same turn)

Alavo (IW city) is the obvious candidate.
With wealth/research builds (and finishing a grocer) I could get 74 base hammer overflow on t185 and thereafter (outside a GA) 49 base hammers per turn giving me an approximate finish date of t195 e.o.t.
I could probably speed it up by a couple of turns by launching a GA on t188, but otoh I don’t see why REM hasn’t launched his 2-person GA yet either… Anyway, the conclusion seems to be that I’m unlikely to get the SoL even if I try in Alavo.

What about other cities? Could anyone challenge Alavo? Well, actually when looking through my cities I come across Ny Karleby. No Ironworks, no factory and no energy (so worse multipliers), but it does have 9 forests in its bfc and 2-4 forests outside that might be eligible.
9 * 30 + 2 * 24 = 318 base hammers * 1,75 = 556h towards SoL.
However, here I only have about 32 base hammers and (1500 – 556) / (32*1,75) = 17t so not really an option…

Edit: Max chops 9*30 + 4*24= 366 base hammers * 2 (forge + factory + coal plant) = 732 hammers towards Pentagon. (823h with OR)

Could I get a GE?
Nah, I’m planning on getting my next gp from Pyhäjoki…

and as you can see this is the first gp in a while that has no chance of becoming a GE.

Basically, if REM prioritises SoL I’ll have no chance of catching him. If he builds Pentagon in Novgorod and SoL somewhere else I might be in with a shot, but that’s a big if. Currently I lean towards delaying Democracy for quite a while…

Addendum: I now notice that Rem, though having played parts of the turn (had settled a city) hadn't finished playing. I guess it's possible he could've swapped research afterwards. Will check now when I log in...

Hi,
First, I’ll give you a message from HitAnyKey:

Well, I can understand your request and concern HAK, but really, if I had wanted to help you I would’ve done so ages ago.
As I see it, in a potential endgame battle against REM, Gavagai is sadly my best hope of an ally. I’m not going to risk that just due to the goodness of my heart.

So, how did I do in the Physics race?
Well, REM prioritized getting democracy, but played ahead of me in the turn so I could see he afterwards had set research at Physics with 3t to go. My own research time showed 2t to go when I logged in, but I could easily trim it to 1t and next turn after I had logged in I got to this screen.

Got it!

You can also notice that REM logged in after we both had played and switched research over to MilSc. once he noticed I’d beat him to Physics.
Next tech for me will be Steam Power, but afterwards things are still slightly up in the air.

Assembly Line would be amazing for my organized factories and good for “being on par” militarily once I have infantry available. Not all cities are ready to build factories yet though (especially the island colonies), I’ll actually get health problems in some places and it’s an expensive tech that’s not on the road towards destroyers.

Railroad otoh is on a straight path towards steel ships. It’d help a lot with general defense and shuffling of troops and I’ve got 84 mines that wouldn’t mind making another hammer. Only downsides I see are opportunity costs and creating rather than taking advantage of ktb compared to REM.

Military Science I don’t need at the moment. Ships of the Lines would be nice to build in a hammer efficiency sense when defending against REM, but I can compensate reasonably well by just building more of the longer term more useful East Indiamen. However, I need MS the moment I’m done infra:ing up Ollantaytambo and get to start cranking commandoes. If I don’t want to alert REM to my commando-capability it might also be wise to get the tech now while there are other uses for the tech…
