Ok, some technical info:
First, the "different version" message is the same thing we faced in the diplogame back when MP players used our own patch to cure the OOS bug. It also shows up as "MOD" in the staging room, which really only my server sees. It means some sort of file is modified - for instance, a No-CD hack on a pirated version of the game, or a special patch, or the like. It isn't harmful per-se, but of course in a competitive game players would be very suspicious.
The game being unresponsive when a player connects is normal. In MP when a player is joining commands can be issued, but nothing is actually carried out until the new player joins. However this is compounded if two players can't connect to one another due to port or router issues. In that case the game will just hang until one of the players leaves.
