@Bigger - dtay is partnered with retep (repet?) who likes icecream so alright there. WilliamLP has achieved gang status -Gavagai,Bacchus,CheaterHater,BaII - seems OK.

So in the process of rolling maps last night, I think I found a keeper. It is Big & Small with the balanced luxuries, and has a good layout that both looks nice and with some decent editing, will give everyone a fair chance/won't be lost from turn 0. In regards to some of the reasons why people would prefer torusland:

I don't know about anyone else but I would not be particularly trilled with having to play sim city for the next year, because to me that just isn't fun.
I've made sure that everyone is placed so that there will be multiple avenues of interaction for every team, so no one will be as isolated as commodore or slowcheetah were last game.

I feel like every player will have more than one choice about what they will need to do to do well in this game, and that the terrain around will provide these choices well.

The map is similar in size, and will have a similarly even allocation of land for each player; I can make sure that there will be no one screwed without a strat res, and it definitely has a variable water style.
In the end, it looks obvious that there will not be a consensus in regards to the map style, with players split 3 ways between B&S, Torus, and Mapmaker's choice. So since I have found a B&S map that I think will be sufficient as a base that will be interesting and world-like without screwing everyone over that I can then edit as much as needed to ensure everyone has a fair chance, I'm deciding that that is what I'm going to go with and will tailor it to fit as much of the group opinion as possible.
I know I can't please everybody, but even though B&S fans mostly want it to be as random as possible, they get the feel of the script they like, and though Torusworld fans want the style of that map, I'm going to "make as many edits as you think necessary (but no more)." to ensure a balanced world. I think that this is the best solution and will stop there being another week of people debating back and forth which map type is better and no one convincing everybody.
If there is a large dissension to me doing this then let me know now, but unless that's a large majority of the people I feel like this is most considerate of everyone's opinions and I will be spending the next few days working on this map.

Settings Summary
---
Leaders: Random won over snake pick handily. Seems to be a building consensus for a mild compromise of 0-2 refusals on random. Can we confirm/deny this?
Difficulty is Monarch
Speed is Normal
Vassals are off
TT is off
Huts: on 7 off 4 abstain 2
Events are off
barbs: on 6 off 4 abstain 2
EP: on 5 off 1 abstain 3 (abstain was basically predicated on "need to see changes first"
see cap before picking leader:
yes 1
no 2
---
So, huts and barbs are pretty much on, but a couple people haven't voted. I'm not sure how we ended up with more huts votes than barbs votes, so that count might be off by 1 somehow.
So things we still need votes on:
1) Huts, barbs, and EPs from anyone who hasn't voted and has an opinion.
2) Confirm/deny that we want the 0-2 blind refusal method of random civs/leaders. I'm assuming that yes, we are doing this because people are talking as if that's what we're doing.
3) Votes from just about everyone on if you want to see your BFC before getting your civ/leader.
Also, 3 people still have not created their threads which we need too.

Also, my understanding is Brick has the map thing nailed down, so I didn't deal with votes on that since it's so scattered.

Voting on settings that still matter:
Snake pick, or if random then the two veto thing.
Huts on
Barbs on
No starting screenshot before picking

I'd like to see starts.
I'm fine with random picking with that 2 refusal thing though personally would rather have it DotA-style random-pick with 3 choices and you take one of it, removing some of the gambling that happens with the refusal-thing. But I can live with the refusal-thing as well.

The issue there is with the number of players we have, there aren't enough civs to give everyone 3 choices to pick from at the same time. And if you stagger, then some players will have their choices even more restrained by what others have picked than the 1-at-a-time-refusal system would, at least that way everyone gets a possible choice before anyone else has picked.

I'm happy to try the 2 refusal system.
Not bothered about seeing starts with a more random system.
