Boo. But confirmed that is ocean west at least. I'll try and go in and move that settler 88 ASAP as that is agreed. With that info I reckon we can sim out before we make the civic swaps and definite settle choices either of SIP or NW

How heavily will we want to spend early turns chopping as opposed to improving tiles? Does it make any sense to settle the capital 1N of the pigs to get the most forests in range for the bureaucracy hammers? Second city could play it safe and go 1W of the start, or follow the explorer along the river to the northwest?

I'm not sure - hence the testing! After whipping the first 2 cities down for a worker each we will be in serfdom for a while so will get more out of the workers. This will make chops only 2t so very productive - but what will we be chopping? With the granary and Baray for free and growth 10% cheaper will will size up cities very fast and I *feel* that saving chops for the expensive and growth stopping settlers is instinctively the most efficient play.

Also the chops with free forges are 37 ham vs beuro 52 ham, and going 1N unless we see some awesome stuff will likely net less riverside (it will be a beuro/Oxford cap here) and loose us our bonus turn on the non spi guys with no anarchy.

Makes sense, especially on Settlers that can wait for cities to regrow before receiving a couple of chops each (and then a whip, right?). Sorry if I'm asking unhelpful questions, and thanks for explaining your thinking!

No it's fine, I don't have teammates often so do a lot of internal thinking. Ask anything you wish. Probably 6-3 whips like I was using in 33, or maybe 8-4 whips given the faster growth potential here and no imp modifier.

I stopped short of moving the settler 88 when I logged in. Mainly because I realised that we probably should do some sims. My gut says SIP is best, but if we find we want to go 1NW instead, then there and on the banana become rather good choices IMO. I'll have some time to play around with this for an hour or so this evening and make sure that a SIP is best.

I played out a couple of openings based on (SIP and 3N) vs (1NW and on the banana). I appreciated that a 1NW capital could pull in 8 base hammers from the first turn, and the second city's combination of 3f center, baray, and shared corn set up nicely for caste+pacifism GPP generation. How did your tests end up going?

I haven't running many sims, but settling 1NW screams to be a mistake to me. Capital loses the plains hill plant, corn, and can't workboat the whales. Also, the iron will be 3rd ring.

I'm also not a fan of settling on Bananas, because we have the tech to chop and plantation the bananas, now.

Are you perhaps confusing 1NW with 1NE? 1NW works the oasis, horse, iron, pigs, and has corn in 2nd-ring. Yes, it does lose out on the plains hill hammer and the ability to hook whales, but I don't think it's quite so clear cut due to the extra 1st-ring yields. I've found worker labor to be the trickiest thing to manage, which is why opting to settle on bananas instead of improving it seemed reasonable, but perhaps that's me not using serfdom and whipping workers optimally frown

Oops, I am. But still, I don't like the idea of sacrificing an entire resource tile for a negligible food gain in the first 5 turns (until the borders pop).

Sorry not had chance to do much here yet - in part I know there isn't huge time pressure with mack on holiday.

I would point out re settling on the banana, you only loose 1 food per turn against settling on grassland and having a grassland farm once it is all worked, and it is neutral once biology happens. However you save 8-10 worker turns on chopping the jungle and plantationing it. It really depends on what we can get to work out of tests.
