pb49?

What's the status of this game, already in the map-making mode? Not a sign-up yet (if even possible), but with corona limiting life in the near future a game could make sense..
Finished:
PBEM 45G, PB 13, PB 18, PB 38 & PB 49

Top 3 favorite turns:
#1, #2, #3

finalizing settings before getting a mapmaker afaik
"Superdeath seems to have acquired a rep for aggression somehow. [Image: noidea.gif] In this game that's going to help us because he's going to go to the negotiating table with twitchy eyes and slightly too wide a grin and terrify the neighbors into favorable border agreements, one-sided tech deals and staggered NAPs."

Would you mind compiling a list of settings that need decided so that we can vote?

Balanced but natural sound perfect. But honestly I would rather err on the side of a bit unbalanced and interesting rather than uniform. Have you tried to recruit a mapmaker yet?

I'm not fond of the naval changes in 46 (and wherever else, I haven't kept track).  I can't even comment on the ocean movement penalty part (which I actually like in theory), but changing Caravels to str4 is too big a jump from triremes.  And privateers at Paper is even worse.  Maybe if the Trireme bonus was changed to "+50% attack in coastal squares" instead of just vs galleys?  Even makes a kind of sense.  Oars are far more maneuverable in the confines of coastal waters than sails.

Or just take all the bonuses away from Triremes and make them a flat Str:3

I was surprised that I quite liked the naval changes - the bonus that triremes get Vs caravels means they don't always lose, especially with promotions. Then the caravel strength increase means I'm scared to send unaccompanied galleons anywhere.

The big unintended problem for me was how easy it is to get nav 2 - you just need 2xp for a 3-move galley which feels too cheap and frustrates the intention of that change (which was that boats could move too fast with the circumnav bonus). The fix for that is easy though: all naval units should start with nav2 instead of nav1.

On the naval changes, I have only played a little with them on in SP,so my judgement may not be the best but:
- circumnavigation for everyone feels good
- I think while the approach of having the privateer as a viable galleon counter is good, paper is too early imo. Caravela don't really get their moment to shine, and I think the investment is too little to counter an astronomy beeline, which should still be a viable strategy against an unprepared  opponent. Maybe move it to the upper lanes in the tech tree (Military tradition?  That's not getting a lot of early attention currently, but might be too late.  Nationalism is already really valuable...), or give it an additional requirement like banking (or Divine Right, huh?)

Why reduce galley/etc. movement by 1 and then give a promotion that grants an extra movement? That seems like a roundabout way to accomplish nothing?

If we're discussing mod changes though I'll lobby for nerf to India and Inca UB ... return to 60 cost and let them be affected by trait modifiers? [EDIT: Was India UU already nerfed in 4.1.1.7? If so then UB is probably OK]

All settings posts that i could find. SO

We seem to all agree on a "somewhat balanced" natural map.

Settings to discuss:

Naval. Do we screw around with it? Or leave it the same as pb46.

Nerf any civs? If so, which ones.

Any units ( privateers/caravels? ) need moved in the tech tree?

Crossbows, do we make them easier to build?

Snake pick? Random?

Pangaea? BnS?

Map size, smaller than pb46, but how big? How many comfortable cities per player?

Please copy and paste your answers to the above questions, if you have anymore to add please make note of it.

Naval. Do we screw around with it? Or leave it the same as pb46. / Idk, i dont like naval combat regardless, so..

Nerf any civs? If so, which ones. / Not a nerf but i think Russia/England could use slightly earlier UU's. Maybe make the Redcoat a musket that gets +50% vs mounted? is that too much? Russia id swap to a rifle is 12 str but costs half as much to build? Good ol' russian production power? idk.

Any units ( privateers/caravels? ) need moved in the tech tree? / Idk, id love to see a better way of countering "knights is Right" but the game DOES need a way to make headway vs someone.. Id love to see Explorers get some love, maybe give them some form of super medic capability to get them used more often?

Crossbows, do we make them easier to build? / id like to see it easier to build. No clue what to actually change though.

Snake pick? Random? / Either. Random if the starts are balanced for it ( one hunting/fishing/agriculture food ? )

Pangaea? BnS? / Prefer Pangaea with islands for everyone.

Map size, smaller than pb46, but how big? How many comfortable cities per player? / Id say a comfortable 6-7 cities each before borders should be touching, but not anywhere near the level of pure madness that is pb46.

Pangaea? BnS? Pangaea with a few islands (script don't care)

My 2 cents ... basically match PB48 settings (except no tech trading, no diplomacy):

Naval. Do we screw around with it? Or leave it the same as pb46. Leave it the same
Nerf any civs? If so, which ones. leave it the same
Any units ( privateers/caravels? ) need moved in the tech tree? leave it the same
Crossbows, do we make them easier to build? leave it the same
Snake pick? Random? SNAKE PICK
Pangaea? BnS? BnS for more interesting, but no strong preference
Map size, smaller than pb46, but how big? How many comfortable cities per player? roughly half the size of PB46 ... aka roughly 6-8 cities, err on the smaller side.

Naval. Do we screw around with it? Or leave it the same as pb46. Same
Nerf any civs? If so, which ones. Maybe remove one of the freebee of the Indian UB. Same for the Aztecs
Any units ( privateers/caravels? ) need moved in the tech tree? Make privateers unlocked with Astro and Guilds
Crossbows, do we make them easier to build? Make them back to vanilla.
Snake pick? Random? Random
Pangaea? BnS? BnS or MnS
Map size, smaller than pb46, but how big? How many comfortable cities per player? #cities unlocking Oxford/Globe/WS +2 or 3
