Currently playing Hearts of Iron 4. Would LOVE to have more people to play with.

Superdeath I'll have a lot more time to play in a couple months (~end of april) I'd love to try a MP paradox game.

I went over to Steam to check out HoI IV, and there's a bewildering number of expansion packs. The base game is on sale for only $15, cool. Base game + 3 expansion packs (labeled as Starter Edition) is on sale for $18. Ultimate Bundle is on sale (!) for $91, plus a monthly subscription "starting at" $8/month. Just how much of this stuff do I need to play the game and keep up to date on patches (an important thing with Paradox games from what I hear)?

Like all paradox games you can definitely play it without most expansions (although some may be quite close to being mandatory). The HOI expansions bring flavor to some nations, and bring up stuff like a more realistic and customizable plane template creator. But the base game is already quite good.
Edit : basically the game was already good when it came out, and the base game you get today is much much better than how it was at lauch with both patches and free content added over time.

ALSO whomever hosts the MP lobby, is the only one that "needs" any of the expansions.

And i already have the subscription going, so im fine to host.
Side note: i have very few hours in the game. Ive only really played as Germany... so i wouldnt mind being "the bad guy" if others arent on the Axis faction ect. ect. Willing to try out other countries though.

I might be up for HOI4 multiplayer. Although I haven't played since 2021, I have mostly kept up with the dlc's from watching Bokoen and ISP.
I would guess that playing on the same side for an initial MP game, and staying mostly historical, for a first MP game would be better than playing against eachother.
Edit: For that matter I would be up for playing MP for basically any PDX game except Victoria 3. I'm playing a lot of Stellaris right now, but I have 2,500 hours in EU4, and 2,300 hours in CK2/CK3, so I can easily play those as well.

How many hours you got in the game? i have uh, 70. Only played MP with another buddy that also has less hours than i do. Generally, with me playing Germany and him playing the Soviets.
ALSO... 10hrs remaining on 70% off the game. its CURRENTLY 14.99. So, 50$ base. AMAZING deal when on sale, and if you like the genre id say pretty worth it for full. IDK about others, but i have the sub/all the DLC and the host determines what DLCs ect are enabled. No need to spend money on the dlc unless you want to practice with the extra stuff b4 the mp.

In HOI4 I have 620 hours, although I suspect a lot of those are playing Kaiserreich.
