I just realised if we get communism first we get a great spy, who can combine with the t187 Great Person from Foil to launch a golden age for us to switch civics again. So I think we have to go for the GP from Foil!
I've got that sandbox set up (which is vaguely correct) so this evening I'll see what settling three cities on our side of the island vs settling them on the other side does to the economy.

We also get a great merchant if we take a slight sidetrack to Economics, which shouldn't take that much more research, so that's an option too

I think Trolls will get there before us - after Zak played the turn they're one turn from Banking with 800 gold left to research economics. We'll find out next turn...

Turn 164
Uncovered a bit more TEAM land, Pirates are definitely on a Mil-Sci beeline and I've switched all our EPs back to Trolls just to make it hard for them to keep research visibiliy on us.
Settling Scimitar costs 11gpt at max tax. Break-even is now just under 40%. If we had The Great Lighouse every city would break even!
We settle Urumi in two turns time, after that I'm inclined to prioritise our side of the island until Trolls get Astronomy. We've taken all the easy spots on their side, it'll take them at least four turns after they land Astro (they don't have it yet) to get to a site they can settle.
I think Xiphos and Yakuza will be very fast starters once borders pop, so I'd like to have them both settled before the GA finishes. Which of the other sites do you prefer for Zeppelin? The inland one has incence and clam 2nd ring?
Here comes our golden age. Philosophy finishes just in time too.
Next turn is the last we can whip - must remember to whip the forges in Naginata and Oathkeeper. National Epic comes in right on schedule and the HE should be done in three turns thanks to the GA. I'm tempted to just save gold until Occam completes the Observatory. We need Paper when the first Great Scientist spawns though so he can part-bulb Education - guess we can wait and see how long Paper will take. I think we then build our six Universities in Occam, BOG, Dirk, Gladius, ITS and either Longsword or Machette - some will need to be whipped.
Troll GNP is a little scary, they aren't in a golden age and only have one pre-req on the technology they're researching and we can only hit 75% of theirs at max science... Guess they have their universities up and running. I won't throw in the towel until we see how the golden age goes though!
As it is we're most populous - and I expect that to go through the roof with SFL.

Does them being on a Military Science beeline matter that much for us? I guess it means we'd target Military Tradition for Cavs to go along with our Rifles? Do we even need Rifles at that point if we're getting Cuirassiers anyway, especially considering we'll probably have production superiority?
Is that a thinly-veiled probe into attacking M3 to get the lighthouse? It's certainly an option--how do you think we would do against them?
That seems fine; we'll see how our costs are during our golden age (of course, then we'll overspend and start striking )
I can't see the southern c? that well--is that a fish below it, and what kind of hill is it on? I think that one might be better to settle first, assuming we get workers over there soon.
Are we going to get through Education by the end of the golden age? How many great people will we produce, and do we want to chain golden ages instead?
How much bigger will we be than Trolls when we finish at least this round of settling SFL?

Doesn't TGL obsolete with astronomy? I don't think it would serve us at all at this point, right?
The southern c has clams in the second ring, and it looks like a grass hill to me. I don't think jungle grows on plains hills. that is probably the better option for Zeppelin, but not by much. either option would be fine.
Trolls GNP is really scary, but it's also satisfying to see how long we were able to keep their GNP down. Well us and TEAM, I guess.
Great job as always, Old Harry. Also, great initiative looking for a TEAM replacement. Thanks again!

TGL obsoletes with Corporation; which we probably won't get for a while, especially since it looks like Trolls are heading for the Economics merchant.

Pirates Mil-Sci move doesn't mean much to us really. I just thought it was odd, but perhaps its necessary. I haven't thought about tech path after Communism, options include:
- Physics for the great scientist and airships
- Gunpowder, Replacable Parts and Rifling
- Nationalism for drafting
- Gunpowder, Chemistry for frigates and improved workshops
Any thoughts?

Probably not - they're a turn from gunpowder, but we can hit them from the sea without warning with our galleons. Our NAP runs out t190 at which point I suspect we'll be in a golden age so I don't know if we want to be fighting. I guess that a long drawn-out conflict hands the game to Trolls too. From chats they seem to be interested in taking Trolls down on t200, although they've only got a small border with Trolls, so we'd end up doing the heavy lifting.

I think we'll finish Education on t169 - Occam finishes the observatory eot166 and we turn research on and get paper eot167, we also get the Great Scientist from ITS eot168 and then education should be a one turn tech. After that we bulb and finish Printing Press eot172, I think the university in Occam will be ready eot172 and the golden age ends eot173. Then liberalism, Sci Meth and Communism are a total of 2002+3432+4004 = 9438 beakers, subtract another great scientist (hopefully ~ 2000 beakers) for Sci Meth makes ~7500 beakers. Depending on our cash situation we might want to wait for Oxford to complete before going 100% research.
I think saving the next golden age for the Communism spy and then perhaps chaining into the 3-person GA might be better. We want to be able to revolt to state property without anarchy...
We get great people on these blue boxes and whenever we get Communism:

Right now we have two cities more than Trolls, with seven settlers in transit. But they might take more TEAM cities. Needless to say their cities have more infrastructure built, but once we're in OR next turn I want to get lots more buildings in our cities.

Wait--are we going into Organized Religion or Pacifism? We obviously can't be in both, and we need Monotheism if we're going into OR--I thought about that earlier, but assumed we were going Pacifism.

Good catch, pacifism next turn, then OR at the end of the golden age... that makes the observatory one turn slower, but doesn't really change any of the timings otherwise.
I'd better concentrate during this next turn...
