Simply played badly. I did not adapt soon enough to neighbours being right next door and so they started to make my life harder - especially India. Later I lost a city because I didn't defend it (didn't account for the possibility of a sea attack). And at that point in time I was already 3rd and clearly behind the leading two civs. That led finally to the point where I was not able to connect Iron and therefore couldn't even get my unique unit into play. Though it wouldn't have changed anything. I was so far back that I could either concentrate on producing troops, meaning I would fall behind but wouldn't be very tempting for quite some time or I could try to get better economy going and hope to catch up. I tried the latter but was not really able to do it.
Finally the last 10 turns have seen me starting to lose on all sides. I lost my iron city when I tried to mine the iron. I build another iron city on an island - and it got razed by another player. That was the point when I finally gave up and accepted that I can only produce Muskets in all cities and hope that nobody attacks me. Unfortunately India decided that this is a great time to attack and came calling with more troops then I had in total - and most of them being more advanced as well. I am now down to 2 cities, my capital from the start of the game and one city which will be taken next turn as I have only 1 LB defending it. Capital should follow 2 turns later I guess. At the latest.
