I love how in the original article Shafer has to clarify his comments in a comment to the article. It's like he let his real opinion slip and now he's got to do damage control. Crazy. I was thinking he was oblivious but now I think he's just in it for the money. Makes me think worse of him and makes never want to buy a game he's a part of.

Maybe he's just bitter. In the Civ V previews they were making a big deal about how they had revamped the whole AI system, there were multiple layers, the leaders were not as predictable as in Civ IV, etc. I imagine they did put what they thought was a fair amount of effort into it.
And then it came out and people just ridiculed it to no end, and had nothing but complaints. (Rightfully so - the AI is a joke.) Not even a "well the details are buggy, but the idea of multilayered AIs who are unpredictable is pretty cool at least!" So perhaps that quote means, "we really put effort into it and nobody noticed, it's a waste of resources".
Alternately, it's an acknowledgement that they fucked up the gameplay even worse than the AI. Either way I don't think that quote in particular reflects badly on him; it's a financial claim, not a game design claim.

I think the financial argument is really a lot of nonsense. Firaxis could have released any game whatsoever under the title CivV -- and it turns out they released a really crappy one -- and it would have made a ton of money, because it's a very well-respected franchise where the last iteration was one of the best of all time. So you can't really say 'CivV was a financial success and that's why it's not a terrible game', as Shafer seems to be trying to do.
Very little about Shafer as lead designer has impressed me at all, I have to say -- even for someone so young and inexperienced...

Exactly. Where they will be hurt is when it's time to push out some expansions, as expansions are usually nice financially because the costs to develop a Civ-style expansion are minuscule compared to a full blown game. It'll also hurt them if/when it's time for Civ6 to begin development, as people will be skeptical given that Civ5 was (arguably) the first game in the series to take a serious step back.

Do you think they'll bother releasing a full blown expansion instead of releasing imba DLC?

Yes. $30 vs <$30, and there is a large group of people that still only buy games retail.

Eh? People are still playing Civ5?
Good to see that Robert Plomp (Apolyton site admin) is still drinking the corporate kool-aid about how Civ5 has "so much potential." I would have thought that when Civ5 helped turned their website into a ghost town the lights might have gone on... guess not. They were telling everyone to wait and have faith in Firaxis back in October, and apparently that's still the story now. But hey, that's ok because Civ5 has "SO MUCH POTENTIAL"!!!
By the way, are you guys aware that Realms Beyond now has about as much forum traffic as Apolyton? It's true. We've come so far from when RBCiv consisted of 8-10 people setting up shop in the summer of 2002. Just think how active we'd be if Civ5 had actually been good!

I think Civ 5 has gone through the cycle that many people predicted. At first people were happy with new things, quickly realizing that new doesn't automatically mean better. This turned into anger and flaming with the typical fan-boys defending the 'potential' of the game.
We're now in next and maybe final stage of the cycle, which is simply apathy. Nobody really cares for this game any longer.
What on earth is Shirk smoking to claim that the community is happy about yet another great civ game? They managed to destroy one of the most successful gaming franchises and he is as self congratulatory and delusional as ever. No wonder Firaxis and 2k are going down the drain.
Oh, I forgot, they will make their comeback with the uber-marvelous FB civ.
