Sounds like a plan to me.

Good to know my use of expendable recruits to buffer my better troops is not insane. lol I was losing my levelled up units as fast as I got them, which made handling the tougher AI units very unpleasant. banghead A big part of that was not having a strong healer, as I could not seem to get enough XP on a mage or shaman to advance them.

8 HP per round plus curing poison certainly makes life better for the front line troops. lol At least until the enemies get scaled up further....

Good luck with the orcish and trollish hordes.

Abundance is an understatement. You're Bill Gates going mercenary shopping.

Turn 2

Start seting up the footpad line and move some shits around.

Turn 3 and AI's turn.

I set up a picket line of footpads and about to level units backed up by healers.

Almost all those units are either about to level or have a healer backing them up.

Ultimately we lost a footpad who got realy focused. And one footpad got weakened. Ya just don't die rolleye.

If you want suggestions or somthing I will try and answer when I am online.

OK, looks like more, more, more units is the order of the day. lol Unit spam and keep pushing units forward. Grab some villages once we gain a bit of space, more to cut down the AIs' potential income than because we need to worry about gold.

I will try to keep our lines secure and not lose anybody important. Freshly recruited expendables...no guarantees. lol

OK, some heavy slogging here. Lots of fighting, many deaths. Not all ours, fortunately.

Turn 4

- I check the situation, and it doesn't look good. frown We have a LOT of incoming enemies, and some good units are rather exposed. I shuffle a lot of units to try to form a stronger defensive line.

I am trying to push out at either end, giving us more room to deploy troops and also preventing the enemy from flanking us and getting multiple attackers on the end units. This effort will continue throughout my turns.

- I do manage to level up about 4 units with kills or fighting. smile

- I also make a stupid mistake and recall a bunch of top units...who can not gain any more levels. duh Are these guys permanently limited, or can they gain more levels later? Anyway, they will end up just taking up space...and meaning we do not have enough room to retreat everyone into the caves if things go badly. frown Sorry!

IBT we lose one thug who is at an exposed corner (3 attackers), but a lot of people take damage. We are missing more often than I like as well, but the enemy is losing units.

Turn 5

- Lots more shifting, pushing the ends of the lines out, etc. I also shuffle wounded units back for healing, fresh units into the front.
- I manage to get a troll kill (level 2) for our druid Uberfish. smile

You can see the line has moved southeast and northwest.

IBT we get hit hard, losing 4 level 1 units. frown Three were at full strength, one just got killed by a level 2 orc warrior hitting all three times. No advanced units lost, at least.

Turn 6

- More of the same. I am having trouble getting enough troops to the north, due to the heavier terrain there.

IBT the enemy breaks through our line in the north as three more level 1 units die. yikes We have a situation here, with one group in danger of getting cut off.

I tried to protect a couple wounded units by pulling them back and left a weak spot, which got busted open. frown We have troops available, so pull back and straighten the line to avoid leaving too many units exposed to multiple attackers.

The south is doing much better, fortunately. Just keep moving troops, and using the druid and villages for healing.

I had some ups and downs here.

First turn was starting to get things under control. The IT was real slaughter here, losing a couple footpads and the lvl one dwarf in the north. :

Things were okay, I lost the fugitive on the frontlines underestimating how much damage he'd take.

Anyway next turn I was able to really turn the battle around in the north, the hurt footpad was able to kill a wolf and lvl up, killed another troll the dwarf lvled from 2 to 3 (he's awesome up there in the mountains.) And even the white mage got a shot in on a troll.

In the IT we took 0! losses even got some defensive kills. :

Okay now here comes my one eff up of the set. In the north we killed the last wolf, two trolls and basically cleared it all out. The dwarf actually one shots one troll with 20 dmg. The mage is safely behind lines and healing away. In the middle we're holding ground doing some good stuff.

In the south I made a mistake, see the Sulla drake? he's about half health. He's doing fine I think. I have him breath on the wolf there, does 14 or so damage. Then the dwarf next to him kills a wolf. I calculate and even if the wolf hits the Drake with all attacks and any of the other units get in range and hit him, HE WILL NOT DIE. So I leave him.

Here's what it looks like before I end turn, note the cleared north:

I end turn, the wolf attacks him. He gets two shots in. The problem is that the drake also gets a shot in and kills the wolf. Now the crossbow slides over and hits the drake, then the assassin runs up and kills the drake...

Great... To make me feel worse the Drake starts screaming "help me help me" Bruindane's like "by the gods you evil won't get away with this." Basically ALL the characters are screaming at me for letting this guy die. Even F&I says:

Thanks F&I.

SO here's what the turn looks like:

I feel really bad about the Drake loss. The AI only made me feel worse. It's best not to get too attached to these guys...

Pretty decent turns overall, Lewwyn.

Losing the drake is unfortunate alright, but you have to use these guys to get them XP and sometimes they get killed. He wasn't very tough and did not get a good defense bonus (I guess this is part of him being a drake?) -- I was worried all along that some level 2 enemy would one-shot him. frown

Nice work on getting the north under control. The situation there is looking good. smile The south still has the enemies stacked a couple rows deep, especially with all those poisoning assassin bastards. frown Be especially careful with that southern-most point, as that unit is exposed to three attackers and tends to die a lot. frown If that happens a fresh enemy can move through and attack our druid, so be careful!

In the middle-northern, we have a poisoned, heavily injured master bowman who needs to be pulled back. But otherwise things are looking better here, With some fresh units we can maybe push the line forward in the north.

I don't think we are going to reach the enemy leaders, but we are gaining a fair bit of experience and are levelling up some more units. smile We just have to avoid losing our best units. The poor drake was loyal, but not really all that good sadly. frown

I realy did like the drake. He may have been wimpy but he was a strong ally. This doesn't have somthing to do with him being Sullla does it. I mean geting a dictator killed usuauly gets you a metal but still don't hate on drakes.

As far as drakes being bad I don't realy know. I agree, drakes mostly are crap but get realy strong during the day.

Drakes do not get much benefit from hills/mountains, so he was probably getting hit a lot more than the enemy units. And drakes are vulnerable to piercing damage...like crossbows. frown Add a little bad luck, and he died.

Drakes do get nice offense, both melee and ranged, so he will be missed. But we will be doing well for this map if he is the only good loyal unit we lose.

Drakes are surprisingly bad on mountains really. In one level of the Dwarf campaign, I killed an endless spam of drakes with thunderers and guardsmen on mountains.
