Civilization 5 Announced

joncnunn Wrote:In single player though, it's quite possible to win without taking advantage of such an exploit.

Possible, yes, but in any kind of competitive environment (Game of the Month, Hall of Fame, whatever) you will get crushed by everyone else who's gleefully exploiting this stuff. There's nothing you can do to make up that kind of free gold. In the game I linked, the player got well over 10,000 gold for free. He used that to cash-rush pretty much every unit he ever built. It's comically tragic how you can win on Deity in Civ5 without ever bothering to build your own units (cash rush!) or research your own techs (research agreements!) Your actual production and beaker amount is virtually irrelevant.

Wouldn't you think that the AI would just stop selling you resources after you broke a trade deal? Apparently not... There's no real limit to how many times you can sucker punch them this way. It's shockingly bad game design. They go and create this byzantine, labyrinthine diplomatic system (with all of the rules operating based on hidden modifiers which are never explained or shown in-game), and then fail to stop the most incredibly obvious trading screen exploits.

Nice work, Firaxis. But hey, we'll be able to buy more DLC soon, that makes up for it, right? smokesmokesmoke

Quote:The Denmark Civilization and Scenario Pack brings you both the Denmark Civilization and the new Scenario, 1066: Year of Viking Destiny, to further enhance your Civilization V experience. Rule the world as Harald Bluetooth, with your powerful Berserker warriors and Ski Infantry!
Quote:Explorers Map Pack

Ten fantastic single-player maps make up this Civilization V DLC pack designed by Firaxis Games. Five of the maps are based on real-world locations, chosen for their historical interest and gameplay possibilities. The remaining five are scripted map environments. These maps will change from game to game, but will focus on an exciting gameplay theme. From the arid Sandstorm to the lush Amazon, and from the Caribbean to the Bering Strait, these maps will give skillful Civilization V players new lands to conquer!

The timing here made me laugh. lol

And are they really still marketing maps? Kind of lame to charge people for what they should be able to get for free from a fansite.

And for the record, I posted that before the announcement of new downloadable content. Nor do I have any inside connections with Firaxis anymore. But it's not hard to make predictions of that nature; give it a few weeks, and there will be more dribbling out of civs and maps at $5 each.

Can you imagine, if Civ5 were a good game, just what kind of incredible havoc those downloadable civs would be playing on our tournament events? You can't transfer savegame files unless both players have exactly the same DLC content each. It's completely killed both the MP and SG community. I'm almost relieved that none of us are playing this game, so I don't have to handle the logistics.

Does anyone know, are they even doing a Civ5 expansion? Feels like they'll just keep on selling civs one at a time. Much easier/cheaper to keep creating art assets and selling them off rather than make actual gameplay improvements.

They probably will. The way I see it, they'll promise to fix everything that was wrong in Civ5, then release limited information about the actual details before-hand, so people will buy it for the full price. Soon the people will realise that it's still as broken and they got screwed; twice. No biggie tho, Firaxis already has their money and maybe some suckers will even keep buying DLC!

They are making a GOTY edition with all DLCs so it doesn't seem like there will be a full expansion. Think Fallout 3 extra content strategy.

At least they aren't making another Colonization like spin off...

Uh... in which universe did Civ5 manage to win a "game of the year" award? Oh, right... ours, apparently.

Kind of diminishes the supposed prestige from Civ4 receiving the same award a few years back...

..

"Game of the Year" = "Money maker of the year"

Unfortunately.

Ah, right. And here was I thinking an award with that title should have something to do with actual quality or substance...

I'm in complete agreement with you. Unfortunately the game makers/raters disagree. frown
