I'm rarely on as it is. =p

But I agree w/ Sulla. LoL vs HoN vs DotA is mostly silly. Play what you like. If you really want, I can ramble off all the differences, but really which is "better"?

I play both.

Maybe it would be a good idea to have a dedicated RB night, I mean tuesdays are fun and all but more inhouse games would be great. Certainly miss those inhouse 3v3's where we experimented

That's a good idea Dantski. I found it was easier to practice at SCII by setting a practice partner night.

In my case, I came back after vacation, and started calculating how many hours I would have to play to "catch up" - not just the number of levels I fell behind, but also to get caught up on various item/champ changes, the new meta, etc.

Carpe Diem does not translate to "seize the controller."

I've found we have sort of distinct time bands. It seems Cull and Seyruun have pretty large blocks, but most of the euros are on early (for me), then most of the RB Americans, and finally the ladder Civ folks late at night.

I wouldn't mind a dedicated RB night. I don't think it's even necessary to have 8-10 people, I'd be fine with 5man premades in either ranked or normal where people can experiment safely...I think as long as it's clear initially whether it's a "try hard" game or not we can have good fun that way.

Hello folks, I thought I'd delurk for a second to say that I've just started playing this. I enjoy reading reports or watching videos of playthroughs of games that interest me (therefore the forum here and Sulla's website are goldmines), but in this case I finally decided I'd give League of Legends a go. It appeals to me, at least if I can somehow avoid the worst of the trash talking community that usually surrounds competitive games like it.

Anyway, so far I've only played some bot matches using Ashe and Cho'Gath, mainly trying to get used to the controls. Turns out the basics like last hitting are harder than they look! I'm guessing the best way to improve at that is to just keep practicing (and hit s, and right click everywhere). Hopefully it'll eventually become natural enough that I can get rid of the tunnel vision and think more about the strategic stuff during a game!

What are people's current thoughts on runes? Should I save up IP for when I hit level 20, or should I get some cheap tier 1 runes while I wait? Any other advice for someone just starting out is welcome too.

I bought Tier 1 runes and about five champions and still had enough IP at lvl20 for a full set of runes. Still, I'd recommend skipping the tier 1 runes, you'll be just fine without them. Also don't immediately buy every champ you have fun playing, you'll just find another one and then ditch the one you bought.. Maybe buy one or two to be your mains, but otherwise just play the free champs until you have a better understanding of what each champion does and which ones really are your cup of tea.

I'm on quite a lot, but again, I work full-time and am in Euro-land, so it's difficult for me to play past 7pm EST.

I'm also going to appeal to the people who feel they can't possibly catch up to come back. It's really good fun, and having more RBers is always better than having fewer. In any case, you don't have to catch up very far to get to my level lol

Tier 1 runes are certainly cheap and I think Atlas went back on his original advice of not getting getting runes before level 20 and said to get some cheap tier 1's.

As for other advice, well aside from the ever helpful "try to have fun!", I'd suggest familiarizing yourself with the items you can buy in the game, where everything is on the map and what each champion can do. If you have the time, try to play as many of the free champions each week as you can. Personally I would advise against buying champions with a price over 1350 IP until you have 2-3 full tier 3 rune pages.
