Epic 4 - mostly_harmless back WITH his shield

EDIT: My detailed report

and there he is:
26 sessions,
61 real time hours,
581 killed foreign mech infs,
but also 157 slayed Roman Modern Armors,
23 pages of notes and
several hundred screenies later,
in 2061AD
mostly_harmless clad in full battle armor proudly walks into the sacred halls of The Realms Beyond to give a short history of the, now world dominating, Roman hegemony! crown

- no religions for the free world in this game,
- captured the first barb city in 400BC,
- fighting Ghandi off "our" continent and later on invading and assimilating India
- fighting China on a two-front modern war, which lasted for 46 years til the end of the game

And now I am off to wash the blood from my sword and skin and start putting together a real report.
All hail mostly_harmless! ((please?)) lol

Enjoyed the read. I found it interesting that your border with China on the Roman continent was nearly identical with my border with India in the same location. The placement of barbarian settlers may be partially responsible for this.

On the China/India front, in my game, India was the powerhouse, and China the weaker one. India founded the canal city, in almost the same place as China did in yours. The two Chinese cities to the north of that were founded in almost the same places as well.

India had the pentagon, not China in my game, which made my war with China easier, but the big thing was that I bribed China to fight the more powerful India first, which absorbed all of those massive stacks (on both sides), before I even entered the fighting on their continent.

I enjoyed the read on your late war. I have never used nukes really. Did you have war weariness problems? Did you decide it was ok to use them because there were no other AIs outside the mountains that could also attack you?

The canal city was indeed founded by India (Bangalore). India also settled further north (Hyderabad).
However India was pushed back in a war with China around 1300AD or so.

With Police State, Mount Mushroom and jails you can tackle any WW.
Of course you get negative diplo with other AIs. But in this game, I did not care.

I an other game, I fought side by side with two other AIs against a mutual enemy. Using a nuke then seemed not to give any negative diplo with my brothers in arms.

Very nice report.

I liked your idea of nuking Chinese fleet.

Why did you raze so many of the cities you've captured? Especially with the old, well-developed barbarian cities, it would take a very long time for your replacement cities to reach the same size and productivity.

Using nukes seems to cause diplomatic penalties only for AIs for whom you'd get "you attacked our friend" penalty when attacking the target civ. (Izzy, who wasn't in the war, but disliked Louis anyway, didn't mind me nuking him in my game.)

Well, comparing to my game, razing the barbarian cities seemed to be genius to me. I was suffering with 4+ "we long to rejoin our motherland" unhappiness at a time when I just did not have much tech or resources (or any religion) to counter it. I think this unhappiness lasted for much much much longer than it would have taken to regrow a new city to the same size.

I am starting to think that the game actually encourages you to raze cities and refound in the same spot unless there is some wonder/building you wish to capture. Particularly in the early game. In the late game, when your captured city might have 10+ buildings already built on capture, and you have excess happiness, this is much less an issue of course.

The only downside vs an AI is there is extra diplomatic penalty for razing a city, but this is offset by the AI not trying to recapture the city, nor asking for it in exchange for peace.
