lol As you probably guessed in your edit, my thinking was bed=cot and straw=feed.

cleavers (bedstraw=cleavers, carers are absent=crs, crs without leave=cleavers)

Those shenanigans with carers are absent etc. were actually my first line of investigation but I kind of flunked on the botany part. smile

I think I enjoy constructing sadistic clues more that solving them, though...
