Ranamar and Lewwyn, ministers for Bismarck of Mali

Three things:

1) Had a chat with GES. Here it is; probably worth reading. I gave away only that we had 2-3 bridges and thought we might be in a loop, and hadn't met anyone else.

Quote:me: hi
5 minutes
5:13 PM jtgoldsmith: Whats up?
I'm still at work, so I may be on and off a bit
me: hey! it's 7
ok
jtgoldsmith: As always!
me: haha
jtgoldsmith: Did Lewwyn laugh?
5:14 PM me: about what?
jtgoldsmith: That I called him a war-mongering lunatic?
me: ah yeah
jtgoldsmith: We go way back from our WW3 days
me: though he does wish to point out that he's only declared war once ever
every other time has been someone else declaring on him and subsequently being viciously pounded into irrelevance
5:15 PM jtgoldsmith: I wanted to night kill him for days, but he got himself lynched for us
me: heh
so, we got your message and were going to wait to see the save
but I'm kind of impatient smile
jtgoldsmith: Haha
me: where did you meet us? (which direction did you come from)
5:16 PM jtgoldsmith: Not too much to see. You guys are on a land bridge to my peninsula so to speak
I am south of you.
If you keep going south, you end up at a dead end on the eastern portion of my land
if you cut SW, you end up at my cultural borders
with no tiles for passage
me: aha, ok
5:17 PM we, unsurprisingly are north of that land bridge
have you met anyone else yet?
jtgoldsmith: Yeah, figured as much
Nope. I haven't branched out at all. Was scouting my own lands for now.
A few roving warriors.
5:18 PM me: ah, same
have you revealed your whole area yet?
jtgoldsmith: Except for a few coastal tiles which will reveal when capital borders pop
me: same
so do you think we are all just in a loop?
5:19 PM jtgoldsmith: I've been trying to visualize exactly. You are much better with map deduction than I am, bsaed on 11
Do we know if toroidal or what?
me: this one's not a mirror so it's a bit different (harder) smile
nope
5:20 PM jtgoldsmith: Scooter says the maintenance from the second city in a couple turns will tell us
me: oh I see
jtgoldsmith: But I am will have to find some article explaining that
me: do you have 2 land bridges, or 3?
jtgoldsmith: I assume you guys were the 4 MFG for your EXP worker at the start?
me: yeah
5:21 PM jtgoldsmith: I think I might have five potentially, but I am not entirely certain
me: oh wow. how many can you see now?
jtgoldsmith: Possibly NE, NW, S, and two on the western edge
5:22 PM me: I think we have 2 or 3 - there's only one tile we haven't revealed from which another could branch off
jtgoldsmith: although I suppose one of the western ones could dead-end
See, I didn't follow any of them out, so some might dead end
I figured I can get WCs up in the next couple turns to go scouting
5:23 PM me: you have horses convenient?
ours are in a crappy spot, but, that's what skirmishers are for
jtgoldsmith: Very.
me: hehe
capital??
5:24 PM jtgoldsmith: I could hook them up to the capital pretty much now if I want
me: ah, nice
jtgoldsmith: Which reminds me. Am I rushing you with them or not?
5:25 PM me: haha
I was going to ask -
exactly which one of us would you want to rush? :D
jtgoldsmith: lol
Probably you, considering how much you outclassed me at 11
I'll build a few settlers this time
5:26 PM me: good good
oh by the way
insinuating that I am not a noob?
man
I've only played one and a half games
that is a half a game more than you
jtgoldsmith: Yes, and you dominated 6 and were the leader in 11
me: and lewwyn has arguably played more than me, now
5:27 PM jtgoldsmith: So don't pull that with me!
me: fine, fine, fine
jtgoldsmith: Do you know anything about any of the others?
I know MNG from WW3, but not anything about civ skill.
me: nothing
jtgoldsmith: Same with Commodore/Sven and Yuris/Maestro
5:28 PM Hopefully there isn't a Kyan lurking there
me: yeah
5:29 PM jtgoldsmith: Honestly, though, it is a good thing I stepped up and took over instead of Roland
Dude has played like 1 game of BTS, less than a half dozen of civ, and lost to Warlord difficulty the other day
The game would've been a farce
me: wow
yes
that is good
5:30 PM jtgoldsmith: I actually hope everybody is somewhat evenly matched
me: yes
jtgoldsmith: I mean, I want to win I suppose, but I would prefer an interesting game
me: IIRC the picks (civs/leaders) were all pretty decent, nothing atrocious
so that's promising
5:31 PM jtgoldsmith: Except for these nubs who took Biz, I would agree
5:32 PM Did MNG already finish 'Henge?
me: haha, why would he do that?
jtgoldsmith: I thought I saw someone's score jump like 40 points
me: oh
is it around t25ish
if so that would be MNG's land points from his border pop
5:33 PM since it's 1t earlier from creative
jtgoldsmith: Ah, yeah, that is what it is
I was wondering why the fuck he would build Henge
me: also the reason he won't build henge, coincidentally
yeah
5:34 PM so, I gotta run
jtgoldsmith: OK, well let me know what you decide on moving southward
I would prefer some NAP in place if you are going to start getting that close to my capital
me: understood
5:35 PM jtgoldsmith: Otherwise, my war chariot will have to say hello to your scout I suppose
me: personally I'd like a NAP and a map trade, and then we don't even have to enter each others' lands
jtgoldsmith: yeah, that is ideal from my perspective too
me: but I am sadly not unilaterally in control
so I will run it by the others
jtgoldsmith: I have a few screens already that are bare map that would work, so let me know
me: k cool
5:36 PM jtgoldsmith: later on
me: k, I'm going to post this and my recommendations in our thread and then leave
hopefully that works well
jtgoldsmith: Sounds good, hit me up later
me: kk
bye

2. Turn is in! GES's wounded (0.9) warrior is 2S1W of ours.

3. I think the best diplomatic outcome with GES would be:
a) We agree to a map trade.
b) We do not agree to not settle his land.
c) We agree to some sort of (probably token) NAP.
d) Fairly redundant with a and c, but, might as well agree to keep our warriors off each others' landmasses.

His map is more valuable to us than ours is to him, as we have the ability to plant cities on it. Due to our chokepoint city and Skirmishers, I'm not concerned about him knowing we lack copper.

I am inclined to play the turn. Moves are pretty obvious. IIRC research should be set to 50% this turn, giving us enough gold to finish fishing at 100%.
Reply

Decided not to play it unilaterally. But we should do the following:

1) Move both warriors forward. Don't declare war.

2) Set research to 50%.

3) Remember to borrow the sheep with the new city. Capital should be working corn/FP/cow (the governor will choose those).

4) New city builds a warrior for now.

5) Capital finishes its warrior. [Even though mysteriously no hammers have decayed (unlike the sim) so we will lose 2 to overflow. Never mind, we were expecting to lose those 2 anyway.]

I also recommend offering to GES the following deal:

- We exchange screenshots of our explored tiles (bare map (alt-i) / most zoomed out normal view, with satellite mode on (alt-f). This screenshots and may not be passed on. I can take them for our team, if you like.
- We have a NAP (I suggest indefinite 10t cooldown and we can be more concrete later, but most NAPs would be harmless)
- We will turn our warrior around; both of us will keep our warriors on our own blob for the time being.

The effect of this would be, essentially, the map trade, which I think would be really great.

I also suggest renaming our cities and maybe units. Gandalf doesn't make sense for the southern warrior, I'd go with Strider, but whatever.

Also we can't use that diplo reply any more, I already said a lot of those lines in the chat. Ranamar, you should introduce yourself I'd say, and try to get the map trade.

I have to go.

I take it you didn't play the turn? Work is kind of going badly today, for me. cry

I didn't. I can certainly play it if its unplayed when I get back in about 6 hours. I just didn't want to block you two from decisionmaking.

Reasonable; we'll see whether I've found time to play it by then. I'm drafting a reply to GES while I wait for stuff to compile at work.

Draft reply:

Quote:Hello GES.

There was much debate, when we saw your e-mail about which direction you were in, when we found out that we had been discovered. As you learned from Seven, we have definitively identified two land bridges and either of them could have spotted us from a long way down the bridge or off the other end.

Unfortunately, Seven told most of the good jokes I was going to put in this response because he was impatient and caught you on IM. :-p
Anyway, I'd like to think I'm in the easygoing category of personalities, and I certainly won't complain about straight talk. I am a paragon of honor! ;-)

Fortunately, due to our relative placement, it seems reasonable to establish a flexible NAP. Say, indeterminate length with either party being able to cancel it with a 10T warning? We can renegotiate it later, once the game has taken shape. Due to our relative positions on the map, it seems we won't even need a settling agreement, at this time, and I'd say a reasonable border would be the land bridge between us. You'll reach our cultural borders going north about as quickly as we would reach yours going south.

I have been encouraged to offer an exchange of bare, zoomed-out satellite-camera maps of our relative territories. If you agree, we will go about getting the necessary picture(s) to you, but we would like you to keep them confidential.
(Looking back, I argued against being able to share them before map trading and then changed my vote when I wasn't paying attention. It feels gamey to me, but that's about it.)

I definitely would not say the words "settling agreement". Nothing good can come of it. Delete that paragraph?

too late... but I can ignore it from here on out. rolleye

got a reply:

Should screens include resource bubbles?

I think I can agree to your proposal. Roland isn't really playing at this point, and everyone else is a DL'er.

In general, I don't like the whole cancellation-NAP arrangements, but I think early game it makes good sense. Especially when I have war chariots and you have skirmishers. If anything, instead of wasting hammers on each other, we should be going out together and ruining someone else's game. Where is Amelia located again? Oh wait . . . wrong games. How is that for lunatic war-mongering?

GES

I was figuring no resource bubbles because I'm paranoid, personally. How about the rest of you? (I'm going to go actually do my SCUBA homework now, so talk amongst yourselves. wink )

HA! nice reference to the plan to eliminate Amelia in PBEM 11.

Anyway, I ended up playing the turn. I pretty much did everything. And I renamed everything to:

Workers:
Samwise Gamgee
Frodo Baggins

Warriors:
Strider
Gandalf

Cities:
Barad-Dur
Minas Tirith

Our Name:
RL7

Our Empire Name:
Middle Earth

SS of our new city:
