Gustaran Wrote:Sure you don't NEED the perfect runepages to win. Sullla/Cull/Terror would probably farm 50% more than me if even they didn't use any runes at all. My thinking is as follows:
1) I like going perfectly prepared into battle. The reason being that I am not a great player. So having an optimal rune/masteries setup before the game starts will somewhat counterbalance any mistakes I might make. Example: If an all attspeed runepage let's you clear the jungle with WW 25 seconds faster, and your first gank doesn't net a kill you may be still at the same point in the jungle where somebody with suboptimal runes is.
Suboptimal pages aren't so bad though. My "suboptimal" WW page doesn't have any attack speed runes currently. It does have Arpen marks and quints and Armor and Mres/lvl yellows/blues respectively. I get tankier as the game progresses at the cost of some speed. Sure, Arpen marks and quints aren't a superbig deal on WW, but this lets me keep my pages more universal. Obviously, if you have mana regen runes on your only AP carry page then it will hurt your Vladimir, Kennen or Katarina quite a bit, but those are a bit extreme cases and can be worked around.
Gustaran Wrote:2) I like to support games I play a lot. Sure, there were games like Civ 4 that gave you a tremendous value for your money, but I feel those days are gone.
Nowadays, you buy Assassin's Creed 2 for the PS3 which costs 60$. Next, you realize that they cut 2-3 story missions in advance to sell them to you as DLC. So you pay another 15-20$ for a game that entertains for maybe 15 hours. Therefore I don't mind buying some RP for money if I still get fun out of the game. I mean F2P games only work, if at least some players spend real money or you have ad banners all over the place (imagine the game stops at 15 minute mark: "And here a message from our sponsor, farm more minions with Logitech gear !" )
Well I'm not arguing with that. If you like the game enough to warrant spending money on it, knock yourself out. It's just that the game demands far less from you than absolutely perfect runepages or all the possible champions. Sure, having all the champions gives you better counterpicks in Ranked and possibilities for trade. However it's not that big of a deal unless you strive for the highest ELOs where there's more to be gotten from playing than your own enjoyment.
Gustaran Wrote:3) I like skins (not all of them though ). I believe skins give you a psychological advantage in the game. Elementz once had a post in his blog that in soloQ the team with more skins would most likely win. And I feel that's true to some extent, since usually people who buy a skin know the champion inside out
Jokes aside, skins are again optional, though, so I'm not too sure if the post is supposed to address any of my points or just let you add your input on why are there benefits for paying for this game. ^^"
My message is that steep IP costs might hurt but in the end you can still play budget and manage to play efficiently.
So let's end this by treating ourselves to some soothing music. I'm sure many of you can relate...

On that note Guardsman Bob is streaming starting out in ranked with his European account. The first game he is laning Malphite mid and the enemy team keeps swapping out who is against him because they are getting killed, while he is talking about how elo hell doesn't exist.

Not bad, but I think they could add in some more info.
I like in a HoN spectator mod that you can also see team XP and team gold to see which team has an aggregate advantage. Little dots to indicate how many levels in a particular skill would also be awesome, combined with a CD overlay.

Is it possible some of that is available via mouse overlay? It seems to me that having all of that, at once, would get a little cluttered, particularly on lower resolutions.

Question: LoL is a 3D game but with an old-school camera. Does the field of view change at higher resolution or do the models just show more detail? I play at my native "almost blind" 1600x1000 but since I still rock a CRT I can shoot up to 2304x1440 for games and should probably do so if I can see double the map area.

Well I'm at 1024x768 at the moment, so I can't see very much I think the field of view does change, but I don't have any evidence for that (watching other people on livestream I can always seem to see more than I can, but that might just be a wonky perception or something...)

Guardsman Bob is the best . I watched part of his second game where he was super relaxed about the jungler without smite and numerous heal summoner spells in the game.

The summoner spells in that game were bizarre. I remember there was a Heal Ghost Galio and a Heal Teleport Master Yi on the other team. Even in my level 21 games the summoners are normally more sane than that.
Guardsman Bob did have a good point about the Teleport Ignite jungling Shaco on his team. Basically it was that the Shaco obviously had a setup that worked for him and trying to get him to use smite instead might create a negative attitude in the team making people play worse. As it turned out the Shaco got a lot of successful ganks early and more or less ensured the win. Obviously it was sub optimal but it worked out and no one argued. This does require you to put your faith in your fellow player though!

This does require you to put your faith in your fellow player though! The other day, I had a jungle Xin Zhao who refused to take smite. He told us that "I wrote a guide about it, that people love." He died to the Blue Buff, and then blamed the team for not helping him with it enough, and threatened to AFK. Mercifully, we got 3 early kills in lane, so he decided not to AFK, and we ended up steamrolling them.
I think he threatened to AFK about the time I asked him if dying to the blue buff was in his guide...

Ah now people that write guides telling people to jungle without smite deserve everything they get.

(Noob Tip: If you're the tank, brag about how awesome you are, and insult the opponent's sexual prowess. If you get a kill, make sure to rub it in their faces, especially if you don't die. This will make it more likely that they attack you, thus making your job much easier. "I hate this Singed, he's a trash-talking punk! He said that my doctor must have sneezed when I was circumcised! I'll show him...ULTDEATHFIREBLOWALLMYCDSONYOU!!! Yeah, Singed! I got you! My entire team got buttraped, but at least we got you!" Damn, that was a long digression...)
