Football Manager 2010 SG talk

Brian Shanahan Wrote:Problem with going for young players on a free is that they sometimes come with compensation attached (I believe transfers inside the UK don't count), for example I looked at Vullemin and his compensation was somewhere in the £800k-£1m mark, which is way above our budget and more importantly twice the actual amount of money the club has.

I will have a look at them and sign any player who's compensation is not excessive (or better yet non-existent). Thanks for looking around though.

TT, probably your best bet for advice is just to upload the save and let us see what you've got.

Just do a 0k offer, the teams will acept, don't try to directly sign them. Then you don't have to pay the compensation!

You still do, it'll say it just above the buttons "walk away", "negotiate term" & "finalise deal". Anyay it didn't matter in the end most of them left for PL clubs ( and Astier to Real Madrid) for monopoly money (over £2m comp & over £10k wages mostly). The only two who even came close to talking to us in the end, 1) Kilmarnock's Thomas, kept snubbing us after being offered what his agent asked for, & 2) McKenna I signed on the cheap. I've gotten to the 1st of July, so I'll post up my save so far.

Oh and we got the Congo job, and the next message was the DR Congo looking for a manager. As regards qualification for the World Cup we've 2 home games against the Gambia & Algeria with only 2 points behind the Algerians for the automatic qualifying spot. Of course there's another round after this but we're in a decent spot for at least a best second place.

So the save is here for the rest of ye to peruse over.

Ichabod is right, that's the way to get these players without paying compensation.

Here is a link to my Crewe save for you to look at:

Crewe Save

Its Season 3 and first one in the Championship. Plenty of familiar faces around!

The team is just annoyingly inconsistent. League 2 was easy and scored for fun but in League 1 I found that I was getting much better results with a 4-4-1-1 formation with the counter mentality (which annoys me as I like to play attacking football!) and while the strikers barely scored, my AM (Louiseu) was just pulling the strings and hits a mean free kick. He won us the playoffs almost single handedly.

I think my squad is really good quality for the division but doesn't play up to it often enough.

Goalies are pretty good though whenever I give 1 of them the number 1 jersey they play crap & the 2nd choice guy for the season normally takes over.

Full Backs are of a good quality but normally end up with the lowest ratings of the team, especially when we lose. Have brought in an experienced RB to cover that as Angus mentally subsided last year & doesn't show any signs of recovery yet.

Centre backs are again pretty decent stats wise but are normally awesome or awful. May need an experienced head in there but these guys should be better more often than they are.

Centre midfield is strong. Laird is almost untouchable as a Box-to-Box midfielder and O'Neill still outperforms Juan Carlos and so is first choice for the deep lying playmaker.

Wingers are strong on paper but I can't seem to get the best out of them often enough. Andre & Bartoli should be providing so many more assists than they do and seem to be outplayed by people like Shengelia & Cruz Vicente despite being technically superior.

AM is strong too. Louiseau is a beast and possibly my favourite player on FM so far, Ze is still useful but doesn't get much of a look in as the loanee Bunn has done OK since coming in as someone to fill the HG quota.

Strikers again looks super strong. MacDonald, Sikora & Horn are all quality stats wise but they miss many more than they score and playing as a lone striker that is really annoying. I have tried different instructions (Poacher, Advanced Forward, Target Man, Complete Forward) but none seem to make enough of a difference.

Addendum - people like Zwane & N'Sumbu are only in the squad because I need 5 HG players and none of the MacDonald & O'Neill clan qualify for that yet (They had better by next season or I will be seriously pissed)

You can have a look at my DR Congo squad too if you like - its pretty useful in the 2 games I've played - won't be a long-term job though.

You don't. It does come up on the contract negotiation page still but you honestly don't actually pay it if you offer a £0 transfer fee. That's what happened with all the others!

In that case it's a bug then. Well anyway it didn't matter, because they all went elsewhere or refused to talk to me.

Edit: Twinkletoes I'm guessing your problem could be team talks and press conferences. I don't do many myself but if a result is particularly bad or good (or otherwise noteworthy like a straight red) I'll attend and use them to gee up the players or give them a bollocking.

Also how do you handle team talks? They have a huge effect on setting up the morale of the team and how the players will actually perform in a game. Most of the time it's ok to go with a general talk but sometimes you really need to gee up the players (in a game against a smaller team) or lay off the pressure (if e.g. you're up against Real Madrid). And it is always a good idea to pay special attention to players who are performing significiantly different to the rest of the team, through both private chats and team talks.

Edit no 2: you also look like my cousin would if he wasn't growing bum fluff under his chin, piercing all his extremeties getting tattoos where he has no piercings and walking his fathers Staffies all around Limerick.

First two games played and a slightly mixed bag.

First the league opener against a Plymouth side tipped to be a playoff contender (9th) where due to a stupid challenge on the edge of the area and a bad mixup late on by Patterson and McLaughlin meant that instead of a 1-1 draw we lost 2-1. However there were some good points in the game Stepanjan was a joy to behold combining well with Chicharito in the first half (took off Chicharito at ht as he was below 50%) and scoring our goal:

I was disappointed in the nature of the loss but frankly it wasn't too bad.

Just before the game there was a negotiation offer for Angus which I refused citing "important first team player". This got his knickers in a twist because he's marked backup. So I immediately upped his status to first team, and will try to play him a nice bit.

Our next game was on the Wednesday against Bristol City in the League Cup, away no less, a daunting task as they're tipped for promotion to the Greed is Good League (copyright Brian Glanville). However I shudder to think what'll be said when ye see the result:
Wait for it:

I'm dreading this:
Let me pack my bags and arrange a flight out of here first:
Oh ok then seeing as ye're so insistent:
[Image: BristolCityvAFCWimbledonInformation_Overview.png]
I know, horrible isn't it, *sob*. I'll be in my room if you want to arrange a lynching.

And finally I went a bit overboard on the transfers:

Most of them are prospects and money makers if we stick around, but of the lot of them Stepanjan and Martyn Brown are already showing class (pity they're both AMCs), Cruz Vicente is what the doctor ordered on the left, Mirzai is a strong complement to Angus at RB, and our loanees are all contributing already, with Donelly being the best of them.

And completely finally England lost the Euro Championship 2-0 to Italy.

I 99% of the time leave the team talks to my assistant manager with a high motivation rating as then its 1 less to worry about & he'll probably do a much better job than I will!

I use private chats a lot - more to praise than to criticise but poor performances (5.5 or lower) are nearly always criticised.

I find all ass men to be horrifically bad at team talks, they rarely if ever stray from the generic "do it for the fans", except at half time to berate your best performing player. A good ass man can handle press conferences but not team talks.

Is there a guide to how to do team talks right then? I don't seem to do much of a better job so I may need some help!

There is a pretty good one on community.sigames.com, but unfortunately the site is down due to the sega pass system being hacked. But I found it on FM-Base.com for you. Link It's a very strong general guide, and it gives you what you need to look at to comprehensively sort out your team talks. It's aimed at FM2010 but as the team talks are the almost exact same mechanic it works for Fm2011 as well.
