Parchment Scribbling - The Map
|
I'm nearing the end of the map creation and it's a good time to get some feedback. Some initial facts and assumptions first :
The map is handcrafted Version presented here has no resources / bonuses. I'll add them once terrain is finalised. Quote:Huge no wrap sounds fine, should be easy to give each team a corner of the map.The map is *huge*, 61x61 tiles to be exact, for well over 3500 tiles total. There is no wrap. I've prepared a big semi-isolated area for each team to start in. There will be little in the way of rushing possible. I'm surprised the Kurio/Hippus team didn't challenge this, but since it went unopposed I have to bow and play along. It is possible to enable rushing by placing everyone closer to the centre of the map. I'm seriously considering this possibility. Quote:Map - Land map; lush map; sufficient water to make lanun/OO viableThe map is mostly land. There's enough water to make Lanun viable ( I actually had to kill / merge some lakes ) and shortest paths to nearby corners have water chokepionts to make OO a viable strategic option. The map is lush. There's plenty of grass and rivers, to counterbalance this a bit I scattered hell terrain all over the place and put a lot of swamp in the middle. Quote:Unique features - Yes, power 3 not in settling areI will *not* place Bones and Patria. With no wrap there's no nice way of doing it so all teams have equal shot at all three. Link - here Poke around, tell me what you think. Mist Wrote:The map is *huge*, 61x61 tiles to be exact, for well over 3500 tiles total. That was one single person (Jkaen) who said those words and I don't think there's any evidence that the other players interpreted it like it sounds you did. I read it simply as, you can give everyone a quadrant so no wrap is fine. I think the actual distance the players are from each other is up to you.
Comments about the map:
- There seem to be a surprisingly low number of hills, especially in the middle. - I don't really like the idea of making the middle worse (jungled) than the other terrain; I'd rather have the most vulnerable position be more valuable. But I can't really judge it before resources are added I guess. - It looks epic. And Yggdrasil in the center is pretty cool. - There are surprisingly few flood plains. SevenSpirits Wrote:That was one single person (Jkaen) who said those words and I don't think there's any evidence that the other players interpreted it like it sounds you did.The 'huge / no wrap / not cramped' sentiment was raised by Darrell, Jkaen just echoed it a bit later. Anyhow, I think I'll place them near the central jungle. They'll have to expand outwards towards the edges of the map and will be c.a. 20 tiles from each other. SevenSpirits Wrote:Comments about the map:The Middle is flat by design. I'm inclined flatten some mountains at the sides to open more passages through there. I agree that number of hills is on the low side ( about one fifth of total tiles ), but there's still enough spots for a production city and this might be a good opportunity to utilise workshops a bit. SevenSpirits Wrote:- I don't really like the idea of making the middle worse (jungled) than the other terrain; I'd rather have the most vulnerable position be more valuable. But I can't really judge it before resources are added I guess.I had planned for a very, ridiculously, strong Ygdrassil area, but isolated by a ring of bad terrain. So yes, enjoy the goodies by all means, but either stomach some bad cities to make it safe, or have it isolated and hanging. SevenSpirits Wrote:- It looks epic. And Yggdrasil in the center is pretty cool.Epic is the keyword I plan to scatter and label some improvements round the map, place dragon hoards ( and dragons! ) in the mountains and add some epic monsters to the central jungle and river ( wandering treants, heroic spiders, maybe mistforms on spider AI script ) SevenSpirits Wrote:- There are surprisingly few flood plains. There's a lot of Obsidian Plains and Oasis tiles to make up for that. I'm not a fan of flood plains.
The best compliment I can give you is that I am incredibly jealous that I am not playing this game. This all sounds fantastic.
Really cool looking map. I'm looking forward to seeing the teams explore.
Just some stuff that doesn't really matter now that the game has started... Absolutely no raw mana nodes? Or did I just not notice some? That gives a rather hefty advantage to the Amurites since they will be the only team able to swap nodes around. I would have given each team a single raw mana node close to their starting location meaning that if they want to rearrange the nodes, they have the option. As far as Dragon Bones and Patria, I think you could have included them. Dragon Bones in the South ford ruinwash near to Aifon Isle. Patria in the North ford ruinwash, instead of the ruined city of towers. Is hell terrain going to start spreading around and ruin all your fancy work on terrains after AC 25? Does the jungle and forest you've put on top of hell terrain stay there? Selrahc Wrote:Absolutely no raw mana nodes? Does the jungle and forest you've put on top of hell terrain stay there? You actually need Hyborem in play for hell terrain to spread or influence things placed on top of it. So jungle/forest/resources on top of it will stay unchanged until Infernal Pact gets researched. |
