PBEM19 Organizing Thread

Sorry for the delay. Save sent on to yuris.

My house is supposed to close on July 19, so I could possibly be without internet for a couple days sometime in that time frame. I will try to sort something out.

Hey guys, I'm not sure how you managed to start a game without completely agreeing on the rules first but it seems to me to be the case.

What things are disallowed in this game? Can someone who was here to start write up a reference post, please? (And then you all can disagree or agree on the specifics.)

Seven Spirits, you're right, we really didn't have a lot of pre-game rules discussion. These were decided, however:

Quote:War Elephants? No (Commodore, MNG, yuris, Ranamar, Ichabod) Unanimous, really?

Spies? No (Commodore, Ichabod, MNG)

Other game settings:
No permanent alliances
No vassal states
Default Starting Units

Rules
No nukes
The Heroic Epic and West Point can only be built once you have a qualifying unit that has always been yours, and if joined to a GG, the GG was one you spawned yourself
No corporations
Diplo and screenshot trading allowed after having met in-game
No coastal blockades
No city gifting

Thrown together from page 5 and page 6 of this thread. I've cut out irrelevant settings choices...

Wait, you guys actually agreed to that second list? It says NO CITY GIFTING. Am I reading that right?

(Good to have the first bit clarified though, I searched for spies and didn't find anyone except you in favor of banning them, which was kind of confusing. Different terms I guess...)

Yes. I didn't quickly find a response from myself or GES about the City Gifting, but Yuris, Ranamar, and Commodore quickly ratified Novice's list - including city gifting.

So what does that mean? In the past, "no cheesy city gifts" rules on RB have been interpreted to also apply to cities freely abandoned for planned capture. If we are consistent with that, this rule basically says you have to defend all your cities, which is kind of preposterous.

What exactly is this rule supposed to entail?

Also since I am here, can we clarify the other rules too? Does "No Spies" literally mean "you may not build spies"? (Or does it also include other stuff e.g. no moving Great Spies into enemy/neutral lands, as has often been a rule.) Is "no coastal blockades" specifically referring to blockades initiated on Coast tiles or is the word "coastal" just there for fun? Are privateers banned from blockading to get their gold income, too? Are you allowed to trade for a great general, split it over two units, and use the second unit (which received 10xp) to build the Heroic Epic? (Or use a similar trick to help get West Point?)

"No city gifting" does leave a lot of room for interpretation. We should decide what that means. I personally read it as "Good faith in city gifting" which I will attempt to describe in more detail:
  • City gifts as part of war concessions are ok
  • Negotiated city gifts are ok
  • City gifts to 3rd parties to avoid capture are not ok
  • City gifts to build UBs and return are not ok
  • Intentionally undefended cities are equivalent to a gift. Thus, they should follow the same rules from above.

To me, no spies means no building spies at all. You cannot do missions with them, and you cannot scout with them. With those restrictions, there's no point in building them anyway. I believe PB4 has said that Great Spies must be settled or Golden Aged. I am fine with that.

Regarding Great Generals and XP, I think the spirit of the rule is that you have to earn your own XP for Heroic Epic and West Point. If you couldn't build the wonder without the trade, than you can't build the wonder with the trade. Thus, in terms of legality, splitting the XP from a general over two units is the same as spending it on one.

Certainly I think that if *checks diplo screens five turns ago* say, some player (call him Anamar) allowed another player (call him...Riyu) to raze a new city somewhere and then declared peace, that would be kosher. wink
