The only problem is shamans are sooo hard to level up. Typically the only reliable way is let them get the last hit for a kill, and that's annoyingly tough sometimes.

Yes, it takes quite a bit of effort -- and luck! -- to get a shaman leveled up. But it is certainly worth it. Especially if you don't have any mages available to try to advance one as a white mage. I just thought this was funny that you were talking about that and I was just playing a game where I have 4 lvled shamans from Under the Burning sun. Note elves are lawful and we have been fighting in caves for a long time. PS. the rest of my army consists of 5 units so oviously you know what I like right here
They are only really hard to get to the second level. They become completely insane after that.
