Welcome to the team, Mardoc!
You mentioned playing the tutorial, so I have to ask how much Wesnoth experience you have. It doesn't matter (we'll gladly have you with us no matter what ), but jumping straight into the top difficulty level may be...exciting.

A while back, maybe a couple years, I played through several of the campaigns at normal difficulty. Playing the tutorial this time was primarily to refresh myself on the control scheme.
It's not like I was excellent at the game, mind you, but I was at least competent. I'm familiar with things like the day/night cycle, maintaining a line of battle, healing, and income.
That said - I am a tad bit nervous about my first turnset being an attempt to break through a tough orcish line at the highest difficulty level

Excellent! You have at least as much experience as I do, and probably more.

If you have as many new players as it sounds like you do, why not play one of the campaigns on a more moderate difficulty level? That way the more experienced players can use it as a teaching tool, and the newer players won't feel overwhelmed/hopelessly outmatched when taking over. Back when we started Civ3/Civ4 succession games, we began on Regent or Prince, not Deity. Up to you guys, of course.

A less challenging difficulty level is a possibility -- we don't want this SG to be too much like work and not enough like fun.
The Heir to the Throne campaign only has three choices: easy, normal, and challenging. We are currently on challenging, and it is a significant step up from normal for at least the first couple maps. (I played the first two maps on both difficulties as a warm up to get back into the game before my turnset.) I wish there was a difficulty level about halfway between normal and challenging -- that would be about right, at least for my skill level.

Well, I should be able to play tonight if antisocialmunky doesn't want in first. I know we might be in over our head, but we might as well try for it anyway . Worst case the AI beats us and we start over one level down, right?

Sounds good to me, Mardoc. Good luck!
I think we will be OK with the difficulty, assuming we can get past this first level. It is kind of odd that the first map of the "main" campaign is so atypical of Wesnoth game play. Once we get to more normal scenarios the higher difficulty means tougher fighting, with more enemies and fewer resources, but not fundamentally different than lower levels of difficulty. But this first map is just completely different at this difficulty than it is even one step down.

I have 1.8.6 installed. I guess I need to make a separate folder for 1.8.5. I'll only be able to play on Saturday/Sunday.
I guess first thing is first: Do we set the difficulty to normal or do we continue with challenging?

I would say continue with challenging for now, but maybe I'll change my mind when I play. Especially if I die .
But I usually play with more attention and care when I'm reporting my results, and normal seemed pretty straightforward last time I tried it.

Yes, 3 turns. This first map only has 12 turns, so it breaks down nicely into 4 turnsets.

I agree. Let's try to continue with challenging. But if we can't get Konrad to the sign post in time (or otherwise lose this map), maybe we step down to normal difficulty.
Our best bet for blowing a hole in the enemy line is Delfador. But he is far from invincible, especially against 2nd level opponents, and he must survive as one of the victory requirements. At least on offense we can try to use him against a melee-only opponent.
