Turn reports...
T19:
I figure our (loyal) White Mage needs more experience, so he goes and kills the skeleton with the axe. +8 xp there.
The scout by the axe in the village can't really do anything substantial, either. However, it's 2xp away from leveling up, so he plinks away at the skeleton. Next turn, if the skeleton attacks, he'll level up. Sadly, I think the AI might be too smart for that. (There is no chance, even if all the attacks land at +25%, that the skeleton can kill the scout.)
Versus the archer, I'm torn between my desire to kill it efficiently and get exp on a unit that needs it. Personally, I'm not sure the sorceress needs it. However, after I charged with our knight for no hits, I decided to just send her in, and she very neatly kills it and levels up. I could have probably squeezed a few more xp out of attacking it with elf fighters, but ohwell.
Instead, I moved the resilient elf fighter up to the mouth of the cave with Konrad supporting and the Shyde nearby. He's the only valid target for the necromancer, so I wonder if he'll come out to play. I'd love it if he did, because it'd hose his dodge rating, and I might be able to get our rogue past to get him stuck in our ZOC.
Meanwhile, I'm sending our paladins off to the side... they'll heal each other this turn, and the one that needs more healing will go claim a village next turn.
T20:
Hahahahaha... The skeleton took the bait. Congratulations to our newest Elvish Rider.
Elves hate caves 50% more than humans, which is to say, spend 3 moves per hex instead of 2 moves per hex.
If you're in a cave level, don't bother to recall any elf units with fewer than 6 moves. (Well, except Shydes... for some reason, they only spend 2 moves per step.) Precisely two units can reach the bad guy's lair this turn: Konrad and the aforementioned Shyde. She gets completely screwed for defense on cave, at 30%, whereas Konrad treats it as flat ground at 40%. Guess who's going to go into the citadel and who's going to stand outside next to a skeleton?
Due to "Elves hate caves," I'm inclined to adopt a strategy of "don't @#$%ing bother." Leaving the units lying around, though, just doesn't seem neat to me... However, I've sorted units so those that can make the rush into or next to the citadel in one turn are in place to do so. Everyone else just sort of mills around outside. Our Elvish Rider continues to harass that skeleton for the hell of it, but I've moved him onto a mountain (slightly worse defense) to position him to swipe a village next turn if possible. Also, I might place our thief in position to do backstab damage, although cost-effectiveness feels ... lacking. (Yeah, totally not worth it, even/especially after the anemic damage from the rider... and the skeleton still went after the rider.)
T21:
Our Elvish Rider goes for the village.
Flanking with our Shyde, our Rogue scores a kill.
Ela the Red Mage nukes Muff Jaanal for 30 (leadership-enhanced) damage at great (but not permanent) personal cost. Muff Jaanal now has 18HP left.
Here's where I have to start playing chicken with probability...
Konrad and a leadership-enhanced Elvish Fighter both have 9-4 melee attacks, which will have a 40% chance of hitting. We need two of them to land to win. Alternately, our white mage has a magic beam leadership enhanced at 7-3 and our Shyde has a magical melee attack at 6-2. Any three hits from those 5 attacks (60%) will also win us the game this turn.
The first one has a better chance of winning, but the second one could more predictably land the xp on someone useful. We're going to send the fighter in and finish with Konrad if that's not enough.
Predictably, the elf fighter landed only one hit. At least he got 2 xp out of it. If he'd made the kill, he'd have leveled up.
Konrad ably finishes the job.
Now, apologies for not having the rest of the conversation screenshotted...
At the end of the scenario, Delfador shows up. He congratulates us on retaking the city and says that we need a better claim on the throne. Konrad, somehow, is taken aback that he might be king. It's been a long time since I played, but I thought he knew that running from armies trying to kill him for his claim on the throne could only end in taking it himself or his death.
Anyway, Delfador introduces Kalenz, a leader of the Elves. Apparently, the two of them only barely escaped from wherever they were meeting (I now forget...) with their lives. Asheviere's orcs have too strong a hold on the area around the capital, so "We must go where the orcs are not." Also, in order to get a better claim on the throne, we are going to be going on a quest to retrieve the Sceptre of Fire, a legendary artifact of one of the early kings which will, if we find it, garner us more support because it has been long lost.
End Scenario... the next one might only be talky; I'll relate it if it is.
Spoiler for those who actually know the story...
