[Spoilers] Defining the phrase "€˜Hung Like a Horse"€™: Pb & the Kuriotates

I note that Dance of Dragons is about to come out while the resolution to this epic story remains partially mysterious frown

Clear as I can make it in the spoilers.

PB won the game with Altar of the Luonnotar on T240.
PB has given you a full report up to the beginning of T239.
It shouldn't be too mysterious what the results of the lost turn were...

There is no big twist involved. It would have been nice to see PB's postgame comments, and if I'd known it would muddy things so much I wouldn't have made up the stuff about Auric Ascended.

A postgame report now would be a little cold, since its been so long since the game ended. I'd still be quite interested in reading one, just it would probably have been better a few months ago when things were fresh.

Yeah we know that stuff, hence partially mysterious.

What we are missing is the story that distinguishes civ4 city screens and an epic story. We want to hear how Veez poisoned the final priest and became transcendent. So we hope and we dream. Such is the nature of those who love epic stories.

But rest assured I'll be sending several settlers all off on their own...because I'm a stupid gambler like that.

Yup, those are good examples, although there is one clarification to be made.

The Flying promotion/ability, only given to certain units on creation, gives:
  • +1 movement
  • All tiles cost 1 movement (can't use roads, can move through peaks)
  • Amphibious (no penalty crossing rivers/attacking from sea)
Auric Ascended does have the Flying promotion.
Dragons (Illian's Drifa, Kurio Eurabatres, Sheaim Abashi etc) do not, they just have the ability to pass through impassible terrain. *shrugs*
Means they only have 1 base movement, 3 at most with Mobility I & II.

The question is an excellent lead-in though (thumbsup), to a Kuriotates unique unit: the Airship.

The Airship is a Kurio replacement for the Queen of the Line.
  • Cost: 300 hammers (on normal speed)
  • Strength 3/9 (3 attack, 9 defense)
  • Movement 3
  • Cargo Space 6
Despite being weaker than the normal version (QoL str 9) and more expensive to build (300h vs 225h), the Airship has one big advantage.
That is, yup you guessed it, it flies!

Flying gives it +1 movement (base 4) and means it can move on land and peaks while carrying a cargo of 6 units.
It's an endgame unit, and given the Pangaea mapscript, probably won't feature much in this PBEM.
But the reason why I wanted to point it out, is because it illustrates the excellent way in which the modmakers overcame a difficult problem.

In this case, the problem was:
Consider a game where a Kuriotates player has all land cities, and is going for a domination/conquer type victory.
Halfway through, he discovers that an opponent is on a separate landmass. Given that he has the maximum number of cities and can't build any naval transports, how do you make it so that the player doesn't quit in disgust?

Answer: Flying transports!
And to compensate for the higher strength of ships vs ground units, simply lower the unit's attack while maintaining the same defense, thereby preventing a flying armada style cheese on land.

It's a great solution, and really cool to boot.

So in short: there are a few flying units which are buildable, but given the overpoweredness of the ability, they tend to be rare.
More typically, it's found on unbuildable units or summons (eg Air elementals, fireballs etc).

Now that is a summary judgement! lol
