I have the save and will be playing shortly (within an hour or so -- lunch first). Hopefully I can avoid losing too many units while inflicting some casualties -- that red mage needs to go, certainly. Ranged attacks all around for the rest.

They have their place but they aren't particularly spectacular. I mean, you'll get your tanky ranged pierce damage from Dwarves and your heavy pierce will be coming from your elves :\

The main use I see is if you have say 4 or more rangers, and can form a stealth assasination squad

In the past, I've had an easier time leveling archers than fighters, so I tend to think rangers make pretty good line units. Obviously, champions make better line units than rangers in the soaking department, but having a strong ranged attack generally seemed more valuable on offense than having a strong melee attack. (Defensively, of course, what you really want is a deterrent.)

Rangers I find are just the best elf unit

They just seem to fit all the roles in the way I like to fight

A lot of units' usefulness depends on playstyle. I like archers and their promoted forms, but certainly have nothing against captains and heroes. smile

OK, got us through the day turns. (Why do I keep coming up in the rotation when the enemy is at their strongest? huh I really am starting to suspect a conspiracy. lol)

Turn 7

- Li'sar has a base income of 14, plus a lot of villages. So she is going to keep sending units at us, whatever we do. frown
- Kill some roaming cavalry -- I really don't want these guys in our back lines, hitting our vulnerable units or stealing villages.
- At the main front we kill an ogre and a couple swordsmen. I form the front with one of the newbie elf fighters at the corner.

The forest cover is nice, but I would prefer to form our defensive line at the riverside. Too late for that, unfortunately. frown But I will see what I can do to push forward and force the enemy to fight from the water.

- IBT the corner elf fighter dies, not unexpectedly. frown Konrad and our druid take significant damage.
- Li'sar has recruited another red mage. Wonderful. rolleye

Turn 8

- Delfador is doing great work in the north clearing out raiding cavalry. Our elf rider gets into the act as well and gets a kill.
- Our loyal white mage finishes off an ogre, up to 125/150 XP. smile These guys take forever to level up....
- Promote a level 1 mage to red mage for more arcane firepower.
- Kill a few more enemy units, our enchantress gets the corner this time.
- IBT the enchantress almost dies. yikes They are really coming after us, and with daytime they are doing a TON of damage. A red mage and our shyde also take heavy damage...ouch, very tough round.

Turn 9

- The wounded red mage kills a swordsman and promotes to arch mage. jive That's one way to heal quickly. lol
- An elf fighter promotes to hero. smile
- At the main battle front we clear all enemy units from our side of the river. smile There are still a few in the water, but I am happy to have them fight from such bad defensive terrain.
- IBT we lose a level 1 mage as the enemy red mage gets lucky with all 4 fireballs. cry Oh well, the unit only had 1 kill worth of XP, could be worse.
- Li'sar gets some dialog about how she should have brought more troops, and immediately gets a gold boost and fresh reinforcements. frown

The current battle front:

The red mage and the swordsman in the water should be dead meat, make sure to finish them off. Be VERY careful about the lieutenant in the village across the water -- tough melee and ranged attacks, and we do not want to be the ones fighting from the water. Let them do that.

There is a raiding cavalry in the south, with our thief nearby. He needs help, maybe from Haldiel or someone. Or he can just run -- he can't stand up to the cavalry, even with night time approaching.

Li'sar has more units approaching, plus her new forces. I am not sure if we want to try to cross the river, or wait until they arrive and we can kill them on good defensive ground. Then go after the Princess, when she is down to just the one or two units per turn she can recruit. We should grab some more villages where we can, although cutting her income is a fairly minor consideration at this point.

Keep an eye on our wounded, we have several who are still in very poor shape. The healers need to heal each other, or find villages. But with some of our newly promoted units, we have some good troops ready to fight.

Good luck, Ranamar!

I need to get the SotS SG out of the way first... then I'll turn my attention to this.

As for healing by leveling up, IMO, it's the best kind of healing. lol

Other than that, your assessment is about what I would have said from the pictures. Also, we have villages this side of the river to capture.

First you complain about fighting at night, now you're complaining about the day shift...

Maybe if you didn't always do a good job, we'd find a way to put someone else on the tough duty wink.

@Ranamar - I suppose that means I'm looking forward to reading about whatever you do smile.

I did not really concentrate on grabbing villages much, although I did get a couple. I needed every unit to finish off the enemy troops on our side of the river.

Also, be careful about grabbing the village SE of our main force. Even though it is on our side of the river, the enemy lieutenant may be able to reach it. So don't send a badly wounded unit.

Night for chaotic enemies, day for lawful enemies...it is a huge pain to deal with these guys at their peak strength. frown I was able to sacrifice new level 1 units a couple times, but even with that I almost lost several of our strongest troops. yikes The swordsmen especially were a problem because of 4 attacks -- they are almost guaranteed to do some damage. The cavalry were actually the easiest target, because they are the only level 1 units the enemy has in this scenario.

Thankfully most of the enemy does not have ranged attacks, or we would never have survived. Finishing off that lieutenant (and the other one Li'sar just got back at her keep) is going to be painful.

I will have to check out the SotS SG status, it has been a week or so since I checked. I hope you are doing better than the SG3a team. alright

I'm afraid you're not getting much of a summary this time, partly because RB was down when I initially went to make my report.

This is the end state at T13:

Some highlights:
We are now the proud leaders of a total of two Elvish Heroes and three Elvish Captains. This may or may not be the right mix... basically, the intelligent ones became captains. We probably don't need a fourth captain. Unfortunately, for this one scenario only, this means that the Elvish Captains all, together, have one unit to lead. (What a shame! lol) We should try to level some of them up to being Elvish Marshals so that they boost L2 units, too.

The White Mage also got a kill. Another 15-20xp and we'll have a Mage of Light.

Also, I managed to grab all the villages on our side, and we even have positive cashflow! While not as good as getting an early-completion bonus, it's certainly nothing to complain about.
The thief (stats visible in the screenshot) is also epsilon away from leveling, himself, after he got a kill on the cavalryman in the south. I'm sure we can find 2 xp to turn him into a Rogue. *pimp*

I'd say the task for the next turn is to wipe out her current batch of reinforcements and push inward. This will probably trigger another bunch of loyal reinforcements, but, so far, they seem more like lambs to the slaughter than anything. Maybe I got lucky? Leveling a bunch of dudes on her L2 loyal units was handy, though.

Oh... and save:
