I would rather have a unit that did damage and not kill itself, instead of guarnanteeing a kill on itself or the slight chance of and enemy.

Being alive to suck healing means he is already more accomplished than most ulfserkers ever manage.

Exactly correct. Of course, much of the time that guaranteed kill is the ulfserker dying.... :neenernee

Why not? I did recall him after all, so why not use him? He is of no value if we never use him. And he is loyal and a dwarf so he makes a perfectly good exploration unit. The fighting on this level is generally pretty easy, so this is a good time to throw him at some enemies. If he lives, great, and if not, then he becomes just like 99.9999% of all ulfserkers.

Actually, I was thinking like (almost) all ulfserkers: dead.

Bats are actually pretty cool units, despite their low damage-dealing capability. Fast, flying scouts to steal villages and harass enemies.

Everytime someone verbally attacks an ulf, a knalgan alliance player in multiplayer dies =(
Edit: Well, true, but there was one campaign where you could recruit ulfs, and i did so to provide a huge punch in my dwarvish attacks, especially against casters. I'm really afraid of mages and ulfs cut them up.

Any unit with a short lifespan is going to be much better in a short game (i.e., an MP single mission) than a 25-mission campaign where the survivors can get recalled over and over and over again and continue to upgrade. SP and MP are fundamentally different in Wesnoth even more than SP and MP are fundamentally different in Civ4.

Similarly, ulfs should be good for taking apart archers, too, or at least L1 archers... L2 ones might give some trouble without the sort of goofiness I was applying to win against melee units.

Ulfserkers do have their uses. It would be amusing to attack a dark adept with one -- guaranteed victory, although it might take a number of rounds to finish it off. And they should be decent against archers, orc assassins, and similar types.
But for a special-purpose unit with minimal defensive value, no ranged attack, and little chance of surviving to promote, ulfserkers are ridiculously expensive. More expensive than dwarf fighters or guardsmen.
Cyneheard has a good point about MP, though. For a single scenario MP game, a lot of the ulfserker's liabilities no longer apply. The cost is still pretty ridiculous, though.

Well considering that you can almost guarantee a kill on anything potentially, it is quite useful sometimes.
