Sullla Wrote:Also, are we remembering the same Final Fantasy 10? The game with cutscenes like this?
I guess I just can't appreciate the depth of the symbolism here.
That's a fair criticism for sure.
Like you Sullla I greatly enjoyed the early FF games, but I still find the newer titles, especially FFX, worth playing. FFX had a variety of cutscene quality levels of course, both with the visuals and with the writing. I personally think that some of the top quality scenes (opening sequence with the attack on Zanarkand, assault on Sin on the beach, Yuna's wedding scene, and Tidus and Yuna's romantic scene in the lake) were all pretty impressive and have held up well. The laughing scene...not so much.

Well, Sullla did pick one of the worst scenes in the game, but in most cases people only care about the best and the worse scenes, and.... that is pretty much a contender for worst scene in gaming history.

I really don't like ffx . I really just cannot ignore Tidus. I think the Spoony experiment's review of ffx is good summary of why the game is bad. That does not change that the pre-rendered cutseces are better though and the game is 7 years older. I'll responed to the rest of the post shortly.
Edit: brain... I'm talking about how the camera moves in Riven so you can see the sun suddenly rising over the horizion just like in civ4. The clincher for me was how the shading on the riven ball and on earth in civ4 matchs up well. The camera is following the same path. It will be a little different but the idea is the same. It won't look extactly the same because muiltple people worked on the cutsence and the guy who ripped off riven did not exercise total control. This is an example of plasiable denyability.
7 years is forever in gaming. Civ4 had more than double the proccesing power to work with and FFX cutsences look better. That's really bad. If firaxis truely cared about the game's opening they would have given the introduction to a studio who was not weak.
Edit2: Yes I have read your civ introdctuions sulla but I still think they ripped off the riven "sun abrubtly coming over the horizion trick" and the "dot trick" from other sources. I think you have an emonital investment in civ4 and therefore its intro to so with denyabilty the only thing that would change your mind would be for the creator to confess to doing it. This won't happen.
I just want this thread to get over 2000 posts before it gets locked.

So are we now arguing that Civ5 is bad because Tidus was annoying because I can completely support that line of reasoning.

We don't lock threads at RB unless there's a very good reason. This thread is still here to provide information on Civ5, when/if any more news releases. At the same time, if you plan on posting in this thread, please stay on topic, and don't spam the thread "to get to 2000 posts". Realms Beyond is one of the few parts of the Internet where you don't have to deal with juvenile nonsense like that.
MJW, your argument about Civ4 and Final Fantasy doesn't even make sense. Why would anyone care if a Civilization game - which places a low priority on graphics and doesn't even have cinematics - is less graphically impressive than a Final Fantasy game, a series which prioritizes cinematics and high production values above everything else? It's a non sequitor. I might as well say that the first Final Fantasy (1987) has a more complex and intricate story than this year's FIFA game (2011). Sure, it's true, but does it mean anything? I don't think so.
And please cut the crap about "you have an emonital [emotional, I suppose?] investment in civ4", which apparently means that in your eyes, I'm not allowed to express any opinions on the game. I don't have to put up with baseless personal attacks from you or anyone else. I hope you don't honestly feel that way.

Is anyone working on a worthy successor to Civ?

As far as 4x style gaming goes Stardock's Fallen Enchantress is in development with beta slated for around (USA) Thanksgiving time. It seems that their foray with War of Magic is still in their minds. Which is encouraging, looks like they learned from it. I bought in early to WoM so I get it for free; I'll let you know what it looks like.
SotS2 is also about to ship, this weekend.
I don't think anyone has tried to claim the direct successor crown from Civ5.
