Poison is a huge problem as it prevents healing. That's the only extremely tricky bit. You may want to stay back to string the AI out too.

*sigh* duh

This is what I get for being distracted by life and assuming I couldn't possibly be up for a little while...

Anyway!

Delfador waxes poetic about how it turns out that Konrad has no relation whatsoever to the royal line, unlike Li'Sar, and how it is a fitting comeuppance for him that she ended up holding the Scepter of Fire.
(He also waxes poetic about how great the city is, but we don't care. lol )

On arriving at the city, of course, the queen refuses to relinquish her claim on the throne and we have ... four Grand Knights at our side informing her that their kinsmen are busy killing her army.

T1:

We start with almost 1000 gold. Since this is the last scenario, we don't really have to worry about cashflow. I intend for us to spend all of it recalling units (... and paying maintenance on them cumulatively since we can only recall 6 per turn, but...)
First turn, I grabbed our four L3 dwarves: 3 Lords and the Sentinel. I figure we need a strong start. In the back two slots I recalled our loyal Mage of Light because he's not much faster than the dwarves and may want to back them up, and our one remaining paladin, since he should be able to maneuver with the other horses. (I'm not sure that one shouldn't have been a shyde, though... we'll get some of those next turn, I think.)
Meanwhile, everyone who could advanced.

T2:
I recall all our flying elves (2 Shydes and a Sylph): Until we get in close, where there are villages everywhere, this is going to be a fight on flat ground. Flying elves have slightly better dodge on flat than most. Also, they're healers and casters.
I also recall the other Mage of Light, our not-fully-leveled yet Archmage, and our one surviving assassin. I figure the assassin has not much worse of a chance of staying alive out here on the flat than anywhere else (okay, 60%->70% is 25% more dodging, admittedly, but 40%->60% dodges a third of attacks that would hit some other guy on flat, and the other side is recruiting L2s and L3s, too.)
It's day, so I'm moving toward the orcs to see if I can get some kills in before the sun sets. Turn 4 we'll probably want to run the other direction, especially considering the Grand Knights are lawful.
Unfortunately, we can't quite get all the way away from the two Dragoons (L2 Cavalrymen) recruited by the General east of the queen, so we've got Li'Sar on point. Thank goodness for that Void Armor! I'd feel like I could get away with this if she didn't have those enormous resistances, never mind her above-average dodge rate.

edit: now with pictures and without turn 3

How to play this scenario:

1. Recall 6 gryphon masters / lancers.

2. Send them to the side. Recall all your other units.

3. While other units are fighting, send Gryphons/Lancers to ambush the queen.

4. Stab the queen with a lancer, all 3 hits. Win!

5. Hopefully all her other army submits to you and you now have a grand army!

Recalling a bunch of Sylphs/Archmages and blowing everyone up is more fun :neenernee

Agreed! Unfortunately, someone got too many of the fun units killed in the last scenario (naming no names, but he starts with "M" and rhymes with clock). Still - we finally don't have to worry about gold or survivors or anything tricky. Just killing devil

Still, solid start, Ranamar. I approve of your choices. I ought to have time tonight to supplement them with some of my own.

This is a fun scenario, after a campaign with a lot of kind of blah, flat maps. Best played as a hollywood-style fantasy battle, just recall everything and then smash your dudes into the enemy dudes (if you've had even a modicum of success so far, you should easily have enough guys left to utterly smash the enemy). hammer

...except for your choice not to post the save :neenernee

Guess it'll be a little while before I can take a whack at it after all.

Guess it'll be a little while before I can take a whack at it after all.

My computer crashed at 11:45pm shortly after I pushed "end turn" on T2. I didn't post the save because I haven't finished T3. :neenernee

The wonderful thing about how it crashes is that I can do anything that doesn't require switching programs... just so long as it involves posting (but not getting) stuff on the internet. That's how I saved the turn report. I really need to do something about that disk. banghead

Anyway, T3, once more with feeling:
I seem to have spooked the orcs in the north... that, or they know that going up against grand knights in the day is suicide... but I was really hoping they'd try it. lol

Unfortunately, the more I look at the situation, the more spooked I end up feeling in return. Everywhere has too many units that can reply if I launched an attack, and the Orcs' second wave was all archers and the like.

The good news is that all the AIs except Asheviere have shot their wad. If we can survive the wave of 40+ units rolling towards us presently, we'll be up against basically one opponent. (Although... this is also one opponent who controls every last cottage on the map, so she has cashflow and we don't. Also, she can recruit L3s, although it's expensive.)
The bad news is that there are 40+ units coming towards us, and most of them are L2 or L3. Given the enormous amount of cavalry heading towards us, I prioritized things with pierce attacks this turn in recalling. (Also, the Outrider is loyal, incidentally.)

I ended up sacrificing a Dwarvish Lord to keep everyone else alive. Early in the turn before the tactical situation had sunk in, I overextended by moving one of our Mages of Light too far forward in order to finish off a kill. The rest of the turn was spent trying to figure out how to best prevent it from getting ganked. I ended up pushing one Dwarvish Lord forward where it took four L2 lawful units in daylight to take him down.

The situation at the start of turn 4:

We're also pretty much out of L3s to recall. We do have a bunch of L2s, though, and our crop of Elvish Heroes could make for some decent cannon fodder. It'll be a lot better in the village-to-village fighting near the capital, though, since they'll have better defenses there.
I'm sorry I dropped you with a nasty wave of enemies coming, Mardoc, but at least night is falling, your troops are (mostly) neutral and their troops are (mostly) lawful. :eyeroll:

I am back, but will need to get caught up at work. So I don't think I am ready to take a turnset for at least a couple days, but then I can jump back in and help kill some of the queen's forces. smile

Looks like very solid progress, everyone. thumbsup We got all four grand knights, and are starting the final battle. I agree with the "recall everything we have" approach as the fun way to fight this battle. We probably will need to form a defensive line (once we actually have enough units recalled to do so) to prevent enemy units from getting behind our forward units and trapping/swarming them. Also, once we have our best units recalled, note that we can recruit knights -- we may want some of these for striking power during the day. But certainly we recall our better units first.
